Total War: ROME REMASTERED Free Download Unfitgirl The camera pans across a poised army as my boisterous general gives a fiery speech about honor and victory, and I’m transported back to the virtual battlefields of a time long past: 2004. Total War: Rome Remastered is a very faithful recreation of the series’ first fully 3D expedition, originally known as Rome: Total War, with some modest but notable graphical and UI updates. But as astounding as it was at the time, the aging gameplay hasn’t gotten the same attention, and doesn’t hold up all that well compared to its successors as a result. The most obvious upgrades in Total War: Rome Remastered are visual. In fact, Creative Assembly insists that the engine running underneath is essentially unchanged, so everything from spies on the campaign map to a unit of Triarii on the fields of Italy should behave more or less just as it would if you fished your old CD-ROMs out of whatever box they’re wedged in. And no doubt, it’s an impressive face lift – especially when it comes to lighting and terrain details. The units, though, don’t quite hold up to the level of fidelity we’re used to in modern Total War or even 2013’s Total War: Rome 2, which is itself almost eight years old by now. And that’s kind of a running theme with this remaster: they made an old game feel less old, but they certainly didn’t make it feel new again. Rome: Total War was ahead of its time in so many ways when it came out, and all of those great ideas are still here. Dividing Rome itself up into three factions that are set off in three different directions to conquer, before ultimately meeting each other in a bloody civil war at the end, was a fantastically effective way to keep the late game challenging and interesting with fairly simple, transparent mechanics. There are even a couple things in here I think the original Rome did better than the games that came after it, like having to physically send a diplomat across the map to treat with other factions. It adds just a bit of extra immersion and sense of place if you can’t ring Mithridates up on the phone to offer a trade deal. In most other ways, it’s simply fallen too far behind the times. But in most other ways, it’s simply fallen too far behind the times. Strategy games in general, and Total War specifically, have evolved so much in the last 18 years that going back to the original Rome can be deflating. The AI is one of the primary culprits. If you’re coming from Total War: Three Kingdoms or Total War: Warhammer 2, the various Gauls, Greeks, and Carthaginians you’ll match wits against here won’t feel like much of a match at all. It’s relatively easy to beat entire armies just by microing your cavalry well, for example. The enemy tends to play very passive and can easily be lured into Cannae-like traps over and over again.

Improved Visuals

ROME REMASTERED brings the classic Rome visuals up to date, with 4K optimization**, ultra-widescreen and native UHD resolution** support. This visual upgrade extends across a multitude of features, including re-modelled buildings and objects, and environmental effects like dust clouds and heat haze. The refreshed campaign maps also boast new high-resolution models, and units have been remodelled and retextured to look their very best on the battlefield. It felt like going back in time as an adult to beat up on my middle school bully. The included Barbarian Invasion expansion was incredible in its day, but within the first handful of turns revisiting it, I was struck by the fact that it’s basically a more primitive version of the excellent Total War: Attila, and I’d really rather be playing that. The fact that the map is smaller and there are fewer factions isn’t necessarily the issue. In some ways, Total War actually works better with this reduced scope. But it’s missing so many years of iteration and refinement of the formula that I wondered if it wouldn’t have been worth including some more substantial, gameplay-related quality of life changes. A less obtuse public order system or a way to see at a glance how many men a unit needs to be back to full strength would have been nice. The UI is definitely much improved, especially in terms of readability. The UI is definitely much improved, especially in terms of readability. That’s usually the part of older strategy games that drives me up a wall the fastest, since modern games have gotten so much better at it. But Rome: Remastered still doesn’t offer up information as easily as its descendants. It’s cleaner, but it’s still dated. Getting more detail on how a specific building or unit ability works might be a pain or just impossible. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

And it seems like Feral Interactive has gone out of their way to keep the look and feel of a 2004 UI when I would have rather they shined and polished it up a bit more. There are a couple places where Rome: Remastered has added totally new features, and they’re kinda neat. For one, there’s a new “experimental” unit size that allows for even larger battles, in terms of the total number of troops, than even modern Total War games have without mods. This made the trade-off for lower resolution fighty guys seem more acceptable, as I was able to orchestrate some truly titanic, ancient clashes. You can also play as any faction right from the jump, whereas the original required you to beat each one while playing as Rome to unlock them – unless you want to do it the old-fashioned way. Oh, and the music? It still totally slaps. Barbarian Victory is still one of my favorite tracks from any strategy game. The whole soundtrack is energetic, distinct, and evocative. Playing Total War: Rome Remastered is like seeing an old friend. Your life has progressed fine without them, and you don’t feel their absence. But whenever you do hang out you pick up right where you left off, like you’d never been apart, and are transported to simpler times and happy memories. In this case, a time of great tactical jank, cheesy defence strats, and a banging soundtrack to get you in the mood. A time when Rome was four distinct entities, and when you had to physically send a person to talk to another empire. It took only a moment with Rome: Total War’s newly minted remaster before it all came flooding back. The Total War series has evolved a lot in the 17 years since Rome released, and decisively for the better.

Modern Features

ROME REMASTERED includes a host of modern features and improvements to existing mechanics. The in-game camera has been enhanced, including map rotation and wider zoom level in Campaign mode. Heat maps and new icon overlays have been added for gameplay mechanics such as diplomacy and security. In Battle, the new tactical map, unit displays and range markers give you greater command over Rome’s battlefields. Total War: Rome Remastered has none of these improvements and as such may shock modern sensibilities. But the first Rome is also one of the series’ most enduring entries, and the reasons for that haven’t changed. The original Rome was the first Total War to go fully 3D, and at the time it was one of the first accessible grand strategy games to be set during this perpetually popular period. What other game of the early ’00s combined in-depth tactical battles, a grand strategy map, and a facsimile of Roman politics to boot? Rome would also set the stage for its equally popular successor, Medieval II, and indeed everything that came after that. Half the battle in reviewing Total War: Rome Remastered has been against my own chequered memory. Feral Interactive has done a great job uplifting this game for modern machines, and has made plenty of its own additions and quality of life improvements. Many have been documented already, but I gather there are plenty more that haven’t been communicated. Most sessions involve several rounds of ‘was it like that before?’ and ‘I don’t remember this being the case’. Apart from those momentary flashes of confusion, the remaster is comfortably familiar, and the music is still on point. Some of the genuinely ‘new’ stuff is quite interesting in concept as well. The new merchant agent provides another minigame to engage with, which can net you much needed denarii for your military, though it feels too easy to either kill off enemy merchants to rack up experience for your assassin, or have your own merchant bought out by rivals, forcing you to start again. The quality of life changes around the UI, even in little things like making building progression more transparent, are also very welcome. Rome: Total War is definitely living its best life with this remaster. The uplifting has not gone entirely without incident. Graphical hiccups – ones that I’m pretty sure came up back in the day – persist. Load times are noticeable, which makes me wonder if there’s not some optimisation work left to do. The ways in which Feral has tried to open up the game could also do with some tweaking. For example, players are now able to play as literally any faction (except ‘rebels’) that existed in the original versions. For the main game, it means every faction on the map can be played, but in the Barbarian Invasion expansion, you can now play as some of the emergent factions, like the Romano-British or the Ostrogoths.

Enhanced Game Mechanics

Players can now expand their armies and experience 16 additional factions that were previously locked, giving a grand total of 38 playable factions. In a first for Total War, you can now take your favourite faction to battle against friends in cross-platform multiplayer between Windows, macOS and Linux. A whole new agent type has also been added to the fray; Merchants can be sent all over the world to create trade links, access resources and buy out rivals to increase your income and assert your faction’s economic power. These factions only ever appeared in a game when certain conditions were met, but you weren’t able to play them without mods. In many cases their starting scenarios are quite brutal, and could perhaps do with some further balancing. My Arthurian-era British can’t ever seem to get off the ground. And then there’s the rest of the ‘legacy’ – diplomacy is still frustrating, the AI is still overly aggressive and gets old-fashioned buffs to combat you. A campaign game in Rome is more about running around putting out fires than it is making interesting strategic choices… again, all comfortably familiar, but a stark reminder of early Total War design.

Of course, it won’t stay that simple in the conquest moves of the campaign. But if you take the basics you’ve learned to heart, you’ll win many a quick victory. A problem, especially in the later mass battles, remains the artificial intelligence, which, typical of Total War, repeatedly fluctuates between surprisingly clever, extremely aggressive, stupid as bread or even acting suicidally. There are brief instructions on constructing buildings, recruiting new units, the pitfalls of diplomacy and sending spies, who sneak into other cities in a merrily animated manner. The completely redesigned campaign map, which offers plenty of different overlays at the click of a mouse and provides information at a glance, for example on the spread of the factions or any type of fortifications in the known world, proves to be useful. The virtual consultants take you by the hand in an easy-to-understand manner and explain every single click in the menus until the basic framework for a successful campaign is in place. The freshly renovated user interface, equipped with modern icons and detailed tool tips, lets you forget the menu chaos of the original that sometimes arises. Optionally, you can now play a few more rounds with the Julier house. Do you feel fit enough? Then start your own campaign with your desired faction. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

At the start of the Imperial Campaign, only 3 factions out of 19 are available. If you don’t want to go on the road to conquest with the Julier, Bruti or Scipion family, then all factions can be unlocked immediately without first fulfilling certain conditions in a campaign – usually defeating a people. All it takes is to select the advanced options on the home screen that launches Total War: Rome Remastered and check the “Unlock all sides of the base game” checkbox. This was much more complicated in the original from 2004 and manual changes had to be made to a file in the program directory. It’s much easier this way if you want to start the game as a Spaniard, Thracian or Numidian.
