So when a game as cryptically titled as Thief Simulator sneaks its way onto Switch, it’s already in a good position to steal our attention (and our wallets) from the get go. There’s no deep storyline full of double-crosses and elaborate heists, so don’t expect the kind of narrative tour de force you get with the Uncharted games. What you do get is a handful of neighbourhoods full of unsuspecting citizens and their precious valuables. You’re playing a character literally called The Thief, so you shouldn’t be expecting anything other than straight five-finger discounts. In practice, Thief Simulator works like a cross between the Thief games (the good ones on PC, not that godawful reboot from 2014) and Payday 2. You’ll start by using a crowbar to crudely smash a window and steal some kettles and saucepans. But later you’ll learn to pick a simple lock so you can gain access to a property without making so much noise. Not so long after you’re learning how to scope out a house, tagging the occupants to learn their routines and how to get away with more cumbersome items. Thief Simulator has a lot of little systems running alongside one another, but it does a brilliant job of slowly introducing them to you at a pace that shows you just how many options you truly have. Pulling off simple jobs earns you XP, which in turn enables you to purchase better skills. It’s here you’ll learn how to pick tougher locks or identify items of interest faster. When you’re out on a job and you reach a climbable fence you can’t clamber over – because your agility isn’t high enough – you’ll know where to focus your skills next time you reach a new level. Stealing items and selling them at the local pawn shop will gain you cash, while more specific items can be sold off on a black market marketplace on the PC back at your garage HQ. Occupants you’ve tagged will appear with white silhouettes, so you can track their movements when you’re nearby, which makes for some tense moments as you’re slowly opening drawers and cupboards in search of jewellery or cash.

As a short term experience

That same sense of intense fear comes into play when you accidentally trip an alarm system by smashing a window on a more expensive property, or walk out into a street and get spotted carrying a stolen TV. Now you’re driving away to outrun the cops or hiding in a nearby dumpster while the rozzers try and find you. This is where Thief Simulator starts to trip itself up. Because when you’re slowly building up the details of a target location – building up a set of notes on routines and potential valuable locations before taking the risk to break in during the day or in the dead of night when they’re asleep – the game comes together like an illegal dream. But when you have to jump into a car and actually ‘get away’, you realise you might as well be driving a wet cardboard box. Even the cars in the Far Cry games drive better, and they have terrible driving models. It basically renders escaping utterly pointless, so you’ll always have to hide when things go awry. There’s plenty of ways to enhance your jobs, including missions given to you by a cringe-worthy contact over the phone (complete with a knock-off New York accent) and intel you can buy on a certain location. These tips are expensive, but knowing a particular property has a high-tech security system or that there’s a key to the front door hidden outside can completely change the outcome of a thieving run. You can buy new gear as you level up and earn more cash – including mini cameras that can fit into mailboxes for some handy surveillance or cutters than remove planes of glass in a window – and some of those later skills effectively turn you into a silent god of theft. The AI at play in Thief Simulator isn’t brilliant, which can make them both easy to avoid if you’re hidden in enough shadow, but also difficult to predict when a pedestrian just seemingly appears out of nowhere at the most inopportune time. It’s also odd that you can hit the same handful of properties in a row, but there’s no repercussions. If a house with plenty of valuables suddenly had bars on the window after you smashed one the night before, or had a dog patrolling at night because you entered the property during nightfall, you’d have to adjust your tactics for the promise of even better loot. Such systemic elements aren’t here, but the art of theft is still an addictive one. Thief Simulator is a lot of fun. But once you spend more than a few hours, you begin to find yourself repeating the same missions over again. With certain story quests locked behind certain character levels, you’re forced to hit the same set of houses over and over again. That initial thrill does briefly reappear every time you acquire a new skill or level up high enough to earn the ability to drill locks or hack security systems, but the grind becomes a little too much at times.

Driving in VR still sucks

Thief Simulator is set in free roam, sandbox neighborhoods, and you’ll need to keep your thieving wits about you to stay out of trouble. You can break into houses in a number of different ways, such as breaking the window or lockpicking the door open. It’s not as simple as a grab-and-bag job, you’ll also need to analyze the patterns of the people living on the property and find out their schedule. Once you’ve got all that down pat, it’s just a matter of completing the job given to you. That job might be to intimidate the homeowner by smashing a window, or stealing something to pawn off later. You’ll also need to drive to and from the job while avoiding any strolling civilians and patrolling policemen. If you do get caught, you’ll be arrested and have to start the job from the beginning. Thief Simulator has a few minigames to do while on the job. These come in the form of various thieving tasks, such as lockpicking or hacking a laptop, and they play well on the PC version. Actually, everything plays rather well on the PC version. But, how does the VR version stack up? In short, most of the mechanics don’t transfer too well. Thief Simulator VR has a lot of problems that make the experience rather uncomfortable to play. Once you’ve done that, the object will have a yellow outline, and you can then pick it up. I found it difficult doing this simple task with items like a toaster or a pile of cash, while having no problems with items like a frying pan or a box. After some time running into this problem over and over again, I found myself finding the gameplay more tedious than fun. It’s not only the action of picking up an item that has its problems, it’s simple stuff like breaking into a home. If you intend on literally breaking into a home you have to grab out your crowbar, smash the window, open the window, then climb through. All’s well and good right until you plant your hands on the window sill and your character vaults through. Just like the item grabbing issue you have to make sure your hands are in the right place before you get the yellow outline. However, if you’re vaulting through a double door window the game treats the window sill as two different window sills and you can only vault through either half of the window sill while both hands are on a chosen side. The problem with that is that you do not remember these details when you’re in a rush. I had a job where I had to break some family’s window to intimidate them, but there was also a job to steal a painting on the same property. I decided to kill two birds with one stone and chose both jobs.

These minigames are a ton of fun

However, I got arrested numerous times because in the heat of the moment of climbing out I constantly forgot to plant both my hands on one half of the window sill — it was a very irritating time. Not every mechanic transfers poorly into the VR version though, since completing the minigames is rather fun. For example, lock picking requires you to physically pick the lock (albeit, not identically to a real-life lock), and it’s very rewarding when you secure all the pins down and hear the distinct ting as the door unlocks. These little things make the experience a lot more enjoyable because it feels like you’re actually taking part in the action. The opposite of this would be if the player simply had to hold their hand over a lock, wait for the timer to tick down, then the door would just swing open. I, for one, am glad that the developers have continued the sense of realism that the original game had to offer. However, there are still numerous bugs with the game. Other than shoddy window sills and irritating hand placements on objects, there are also the crashes, framerate drops, and hands getting stuck through objects. Let’s start with the crashes. The first time you play through the game you’re sent to a tutorial. At that time, I got as far as breaking the training window and the game immediately crashed. As for the framerate drops, even after rebooting the game, I’d have a framerate drop every 5 or so seconds. I instantly lost any immersion. As for the hand issue, if you push on an object too hard (in my case, a window), your hand phases through it and gets stuck. Desyncing the controller and resyncing it might fix it, but that’s time lost that you could’ve spent playing. In the initial game, all your tools were available via hotkeys on your keyboard. In Thief Simulator VR, everything is on your waist, your back, or available by a button press on your controller. My issue comes specifically with the backpack, located on your… er… back. You can either take the backpack off and put an item inside, or drop the item into your backpack while you’re carrying it. Sometimes, even if you feel the vibration kick in to tell you that you’ve got the right spot and you drop the item, the item may just fall on the ground behind you. This happened every single time I stole an item, and it took me more than a few tries before I got it exactly right.

Look, my advice is if you want to play Thief Simulator, don’t play the VR version. The game is essentially a simple VR port of the main game, with its only redeemable qualities coming via the minigames through lockpicking or hacking. Simple stuff like grabbing an object or climbing through a window sill can be buggy, and will quickly take you out of the immersion of being a thief. It’s a largely fun game, yet shrouded with VR-specific problems. You’ll even be able to drive around the neighborhood in your car, but it’s obvious the developers wanted to keep you concentrated on being a thief. To that end you’re not going to be able to just walk up to someone and crowbar him to death. Other small issues keep the game from being perfect as well. The lack of music is a glaring problem, although it makes sense to want the player to hear all of the ambient sounds. As you break into the house some shady music does kick in, but it’s just not that compelling. There’s also no online multiplayer, which I think would have been fun to try and burglarize a house together with a friend. Otherwise the game doesn’t suffer from glitches or other technical issues and I had a great time practicing my thieving skills!
