The Pale Beyond Free Download Unfitgirl The characters are somewhat loosely defined, but I still grew to really like every single character in the game. In particular, I really liked Lady Cordell, the Kennel Master with a mysterious past, Kasha Bellford, the excitable journalist, and Kurt Darling, your Navigator and movie star. Special mention should also be paid to Richard Templeton, who essentially serves as your second in command and the representative of your anonymous benefactor. Despite us constantly butting heads, I appreciated his cool head and pragmatic yet cold outlook. The only person I couldn’t get to be loyal to me was Grimley Stoke, a gruff sailor and carpenter who plays the accordion. I really wanted to get to know him, but he decided he wanted nothing to do with me early on. What The Pale Beyond does best is atmosphere and mood. Visuals focus almost entirely on pure white and a cold, desaturated blue. Character portraits likewise use desaturated colors with sketchy linework, which shows the fragility of your crew despite how they may act. The soundscape too is very sparse, with music only ever used sparingly and mostly diegetically. I’m trying to convey that feeling with the (slightly changed) Irish folk song in the opening paragraph, because I don’t want to spoil the songs that are here and I think it fits the vibe pretty well. The majority of what you hear will be the wind blowing through camp, the clanking of bowls and utensils at dinner, and the shuffling of cloth when people enter your tent. Unfitgirl.COM SEXY GAMES

The audio here serves to really immerse you in the situation, and demonstrates a mastery of the craft. The game does have a few unfortunate flaws, however. There are two main endings, both of which are nice in and of themselves, but there’s no epilogue or anything afterwards to tell you what happened to all of the characters who survived. I wouldn’t want something too grandiose or involved, just a sentence or two for at least the major players and your character. It feels like something should be there too, because many of the characters talk about what they’ll do once they get home and you have a few choices as well. As a smaller budget indie game, I’m not going to hold this next problem against them too much, but The Pale Beyond lacks noticeable polish in some areas. There are quite a few typos, moments where code sneaks into dialogue bubbles, and controller support has a habit of breaking frequently. The game is verified on Steam Deck, but I don’t believe it should be in this state. It looks and runs great on the platform, but the default controls just don’t work half the time. You may need to tweak it for emergency mouse support. Even so, The Pale Beyond is a fantastic experience, joining a burgeoning genre of narrative survival games like the equally excellent I Was a Teenage Exocolonist and Citizen Sleeper. One of your first tasks when aboard The Temperance when you set sail is to get yourself acquainted with the crew.

Manage your meagre resources balance safety and morale

There are over twenty people who have signed up for this frosty suicide mission, all with a variety of backgrounds and expertise. Hunt hired a bunch of sailors that have worked with him before, alongside a team of scientists provided by the voyage’s mysterious benefactor, a team of scouts headed by famous explorer Kurt Darling, a journalist, a doctor and a handler for the sled dogs. Depending on what your background is, these characters will greet you accordingly. The crusty old sailors will like it if you were born on the waves like them, whereas the disciplined leader of the science team will appreciate a military man heading up the expedition. These details are important, because you’ll need the support of the crew if you want to succeed. Your main task each week on the waves is to listen to the requests of the crew. A variety of the people on your boat will be waiting outside of the captain’s cabin to talk to you, all with problems for you to solve. For example as it gets darker towards the winter the crew ask for fuel for their lanterns, which will have to be taken from your stockpile for the furnace that heats everyone. Or when a sailor is found to have a stash of biscuits his mum baked, you need to decide if he should be allowed to keep them or share them out with the hungry crew. The option you choose will have an effect on the rations, fuel, morale and personal relationships you have with the crew, and if any of these drop too low your journey is as good as ever. Once you’ve made these decisions you’ll need to assign jobs to everyone for the week. Scouts can be sent to explore the ice for animals to hunt, scientists can research medication for sailors feeling under the weather and anyone with low morale can be sent for an interview with the journalist. Alongside the more specialised tasks there are some jobs anyone can do (like gathering coal for the furnace or preparing canned goods for the chef) but there’s never quite enough bodies to do everything. There’s one final decision you need to make at the end of the week, and it’s a biggie. You need to decide how much of your coal and rations you’re willing to use over the next seven days. Using enough supplies will keep everyone happy and healthy, but you can also add extra rations and heat to boost morale or (more likely) reduce rations and fuel to save up for a rainy day. It won’t take long for the cruel icy environment to take its toll on the crew, and you’ll have malnourished, injured and frostbitten crew members who won’t survive long without medical attention. Outside of this basic loop of desperate survival, huge events will happen in the story that affect how you and the crew are coping. There will be voting on who should lead the group, dangerous situations and potential game overs around every corner, and every decision you make could lead to ruin. It’s a bleak existence for the people onboard The Temperance, but fortunately you can travel back in time on the decision tree and change your mind on your choices if they lead to ruin.

The ship and its crew were tragically lost to the ice, never to be seen again

Because The Pale Beyond forces you to engage with and get to know the characters, the tough times are made all the more heart breaking. One moment that really stood out in my playthrough was when I decided to gather extra supplies instead of continuing on with the voyage, and the ship ended up sinking and killing everyone on board. All these sailors I’d built a connection with popped up on the screen with a text box stating “Dead” one after the other, as the credits rolled in the background. One of the few genuinely nice aspects of The Pale Beyond is the art style. The characters have a hand-drawn quality and are full of personality, and in a game full of misery it’s at least nice to have some visual appeal. The sled dogs especially are just adorable, and even feature in some of the very few genuinely jovial moments of the game. If there’s any issue to be had with The Pale Beyond, it’s in the overall misery. This is anything but a light-hearted tale, detailing the trials and tribulations of people trying to cope on the brink of death. It’s relentlessly oppressive, and if you aren’t up for that then this isn’t the game for you. It’s also incredibly difficult (with no difficulty options to choose from) and I had to restart multiple times when the going got tough. Nobody said Arctic survival was easy. The Pale Beyond is a bleak and oppressive survival game that really gives a feel of how tough the mission into the ice truly is. It isn’t for the faint of heart, but when you finally get the hang of balancing the resources and keeping everyone happy and healthy there are few better feelings. If you’re looking for a cosy gaming experience you won’t find it here, but if life and death choices are more your style then this is the game for you. The tough choices in the harsh winter of The Pale Beyond and the charming hand-drawn artwork call The Banner Saga to mind, although this game is ultimately its own beast. Here, the threat of complete failure is much more present, with food and warmth in extremely limited supply and a meter for Decorum that will trigger a Game Over with the loss of morale. This last feature is optional, but the game has a safety net regardless, unlocking certain weeks as save points that players can restart from in the event of failure. Long-running consequences of a particularly poor decision could necessitate heavy back-tracking, but there’s always a way forward. No one stretch of The Pale Beyond wears out its welcome, as the brutal reality of the Antarctic forces the party to keep moving and adapting if they ever hope to find the Viscount. Shifting expectations may frustrate survival game players who prefer clear data to help with resource stockpiling, but this approach emulates the uncertainty of an expedition gone wrong. The synchronicity between expectations for the player and the simulation of reality briefly slips when winter sets in and weeks begin to skip. Any changes that unexpectedly thrust higher demands upon Shaw, however, make sense within the progression of the story. Where The Pale Beyond struggles is principally in the final level of polish.

The Temperance shall follow in her path hoping to find answers where The Viscount failed

The game’s generally strong writing is currently littered with typos and occasionally runs into minor bugs, mostly appearing in the form of UI glitches. Some can be mildly confusing, like activities that don’t make use of dogs showing that they’ll require them, or resource icons temporarily disappearing in the process of filling up the furnace or stew pot. No game-breaking bugs appeared in the course of a playthrough, but the obvious need for another pass of edits and fixes is the low point in an otherwise strong story and array of systems. For a weaker game, dealing with even minor issues might be a deal-breaker, but The Pale Beyond offers more than enough to overcome these quirks. The difficulty is well-honed, forcing players to stay on their toes without verging on frustrating, and the unanswered questions that arise in the story remain engaging until the final revelations. Although the interpersonal component isn’t dialed up to draw out tears, solid character writing makes tough choices and failures fall heavy. The Pale Beyond’s expedition might encounter a few rough seas, but players willing to brave them can find a journey that is abundantly worthwhile. But I still wound up liking him. I like that he loves playing his accordian, and how he worries about his brother; heck, I even like his unwavering loyalty to the other captain even after weeks of him not returning. Papetura

The Kennel Master, Cordell, is completely closed off and prefers the company of her dogs to people, but after slowly getting to know her it turns out she’s massively into theatre, and now I love her even more. There are loads of little stories, like one crew member teaching another how to read, Harold Turner who goes by ‘Leftie’ because of his missing eye, and a father and son duo who I refused to let either of them die, because they’re family. It’s emotional blackmail, I tell you! Decisions are hard not because you’re losing workers, they’re hard because you’re losing characters who you’ve made connections with. Playing politics with your crew is one tense aspect of the story, but there are also certain story beats that can potentially throw your journey into disarray. They’re gloriously dramatic, but also total game-enders if you’re not prepared. The Pale Beyond is not an easy game, and though I wouldn’t say it was Frostpunk-levels of gruelling, I decided multiple times to abandon my run and restart. Thankfully there’s an auto-save system, but it also doesn’t save for weeks at a time sometimes, which is frustrating for save scumming. But hey, since the story remains the same on restarts, you can fly through the story and dialogue to get to make careful changes where you like. You can get a ‘perfect run’ this way

because you know all the story events and important decisions to prepare for. My total playtime has been around 15 hours, but my best attempt start to finish has taken me around five. I would love to leave the review here, but unfortunately, The Pale Beyond has some serious bug issues that riddled my build. Resource numbers would constantly change, some often turning invisible, a blank space in my inventory where they should have been. In a game where a single can of rations can mean life or death, having these hiccups pop up was always frustrating, especially when I was on a particularly great run. Hopefully, these are issues that can be fixed with a quick patch, but they’re annoying nonetheless. I almost wept when my number of coal bags kept dipping from nine to six. With those bugs squashed, The Pale Beyond would be a stonking survival game. I love the attention to detail in the story and characters, which makes you want to hang in there not for the sake of beating the campaign, but because you genuinely want to spend more time with the crew – and find out the bigger mystery behind the missing ship. Next time I’m going to try and save every single person, and not just barely make it through with half my crew dead and the other half frostbitten and starving. I think it’s going to take me a while, though.
