From Scum and Rust to Valheim, I just find it a thrilling experience to scour abandoned gas stations to fill up on gas and groceries, enter water towers to gather water, or raid random garages for car parts. That’s what the gameplay of The Long Drive consists of, mostly. You scavenge the post-apocalypse for items needed to upgrade or fix your car, to continue on the endless journey. You explore or you die, it is that simple. One of the things that makes this game interesting is how real the car mechanics are. Every car part has its role and all must be properly working in order for the car to run smoothly. In other games, you mostly just need to accelerate to get the car moving; in The Long Drive, you have to check the oil, the fuel tank, and the coolant before hopping into the car. Then, you actually have to release the handbrake and work with the manual shifts. It is more than a game, it feels like a driving simulator. Surviving the apocalypse will be even harder for those of you who can’t drive stick. Now you might ask yourself what happens if you crash your car, due to your reckless driving or an unfortunate sequence of events. Well, a lot of things can happen. First of all, you can lose or heavily damage vital parts of the car. And guess what – you can’t progress with the game until you fix it up. You’d think that a game that’s basically an indie driving simulator would overlook the simple details, like the radio, but you’d be wrong. The Long Drive has the most amazing radio station system. You can lose yourself in the content, from odd debates to awesome songs which, by the way, are your mission to upload to the game’s folder. The radio voice acting is so good. From time to time, The Long Drive will let you in on some clues about your character’s past. You can randomly open a mailbox and find a letter from your mother asking you to visit her when possible. You will soon find out some of your character’s personality, how much of a loner he is, and why he has chosen to go down the path he is on. There are other clues that show the world as it had been before the apocalypse, such as random debris and rusty cargo ships abandoned in the middle of the desert, which leads me to believe that there used to be water running through that location at some point. By the way, The Long Drive supports multiplayer mode, which opens up so many possibilities. You get to chill and race your friends, or meet random other travelers and make new friends in the post-apocalypse. The Long Drive is definitely a game I recommend if you just want to zone out for a couple of hours and just enjoy a somewhat relaxing and calm survival experience. I have yet to experience what other players are calling the “highway hypnosis”, which is when your body is fully focused on driving but your mind is lost in thought, but I am quite curious to get to that point. One of the weirdest genres to emerge on PC is the shitty old car simulator. I’m talking about games like Jalopy, Road to Guangdong, and My Summer Car, which see you exploring evocative locations in rusty, unreliable old automobiles that you have to periodically fix, flip over, or top up with fuel.

Drive to survive

And now you can add The Long Drive to that list, a bare-bones but strangely compelling Early Access driving sim set in a vast procedurally generated desert. It’s still in development, so there isn’t much to do but drive, but there’s something hypnotic about this endless, sandy wasteland. Start a new game and you’ll find yourself in a garage, getting ready for your trip into the dunes. You can top up your gas tank and load the trunk with water, because you’re gonna need to stay hydrated in a forever desert. I like how this preparation stage gives you a sense of embarking on an exciting, dangerous road trip, although the controls are clumsy and the physics are kinda twitchy at the moment. I keep idiotically dropping stuff or accidentally pulling the doors off my car. But the game’s survival systems aren’t fully in place yet, so a lot of this is just role-playing at the moment anyway. Luckily, I don’t care about survival: I just wanna drive long distances in silence. One of my favourite things to do in open world games is grab a car and aimlessly drive around the map enjoying the scenery. The Long Drive scratches the same itch, and I find cruising along those lonely highways an enjoyable way to spend 30-40 meditative minutes. The almost minimalist aesthetic of the desert, and the deafening silence except for the howl of the wind, is surprisingly atmospheric. Especially when the sun begins to set, draping the wasteland in burning red light and long shadows. Stick to the roads and you’ll occasionally run across an old abandoned house or a roadside gas station, in which you can scavenge for new car parts, fuel, and other survival supplies. When you’re low on fuel and limping along on your starter motor, seeing the silhouette of a building ahead is a relief. You can even yank bits off other cars and attach them to your own, and as you play your vehicle slowly becomes a Frankenstein’s monster of mismatched parts. There are dusty highways to follow, lined with electricity poles, or you can go off-road into the infinite desert where you’ll find strange rock formations and towering mesas. But if you badly damage your car out here, or run out of fuel, you’ll have a hard time making it back to the road. The Long Drive has a long way to go, and games like Jalopy offer a similar, but more fully-formed experience. But the bones of something really interesting are here, and I’m intrigued to see how the developer builds on them. I just hope the purity of the driving remains the priority, rather than the survival elements, because we have enough of those games on PC already.

It consists of a room which appears to combine the kitchen and bedroom, a basement and an attic accessible via stairs to the rear of the house. Outside there is a non-functioning phone booth and a mailbox containing a postcard from Mom. The house contains everything the player needs to get started on their journey. There will be a car in the garage which will be a random model in random condition. It is worth inspecting the car’s wheels and tires as there will be spares in the garage.In the basement of the house, under the second wooden board, the note ‘Hey Runden!’ in gold, glowing text. In the Attic of the house, accessed through the stairs on the rear side, near the shooting range, a trophy can be found, to the right side of the wooden door, next to a brick feature.

Infinite Desert, Freedom and Driving:

Within the bedroom/kitchen area, behind the stove, there is a black slate door, which can be opened, leading to the chimney. If the player manages to get within this area, they will be awarded with a random grade revolver. A Sword can be found in the attic. Notably, everything within the house appears to be a guaranteed spawn. These include helpful liquids and items, including the starting fluids: 13 litres of Oil, 80 litres of Alcohol, 23 litres of Diesel, 2 litres of Gas and 183 litres of Water.You can obtain a single Bus wheel from the Home, from the rim in the basement and a tyre, lent against the back of the building. In total, you can obtain 600 BB Pellets from Home, one being in the glove box of the car, one being next to the rifle, and one being out in the shooting range. There is a strange Decoration found in the house, to the left side of the stove. It features a unique bit of text exclaiming: [BORTOKOS KALIPPO!]. In the well, near the shooting range, there is a magic broom that can be ridden. The broom is in a grey-zone between vehicle and item, but because it is made to fly (most likely by a witch), it belongs in this category.The Long Drive is the existential metaphor of life, A long unforgiving road with hills, rocks and bumps that can make the journey difficult or deadly; to way stations and points of interest to stop and explore. As the game is procedurally generated no 2 play through’s are the same, so restart on death can be somewhat challenging given rumour has it the road is 5000km’s. Add in the variety of changes you can make to cars, trucks, bikes and buses or the choices as to what to take with you (extra barrel of fuel) can make the difference. there’s no hunger or thirst but you can pee, poop and drink… The killer rabbits add in an extra layer but are probably there to give you a reason to carry guns.

The car maintenance, the scavenging, the looming threat all make you feel like you’re the star in your own road film.this game so far, the simulated environments in The Long Drive provide a decent attempt at the sensation of hitting the road despite the aforementioned issues; however, I will give particular encouragement and praise to the random elements that, I feel, could be improved to present this as the centrepiece for the future development of this game. Adding a greater pool and variety of random events (i.e. derelict structures, small towns, gas stations, diners, government experimental sites, etc.) with some subtle and humorous scenes with a short story would make for some interesting and engaging experiences, perhaps leading onto some more interesting development projects, such as procedural generation and emergent narrative, for use in this game and future games.A front engined, sedan or estate, gasoline powered, water cooled vehicle.
