The average shooter player knows the virtual counterparts of these locations like the back of his hand. However, the greatest, bloodiest conflict in human history often goes unnoticed. And when renowned developers finally make a game about it – we’re looking at you, DICE with Battlefield 1 – history is streamlined, far-Michael-Bayd, transformed into the backdrop for your personal action movie. Nice? Doubtless. truthful? Well… not really. Fortunately there is still M2H, which first with Verdun and now with Tannenberg makes a valiant attempt to honor the Great War. Let’s get straight to the point: if Verdun was really your thing four years ago, you can blindly buy Tannenberg – actually a stand-alone expansion. After all, for this review we once again dusted Verdun, only to note what we secretly suspected: you will not find much new under the sun in Tannenberg. The game plays just a little more smoothly and the battlefields have moved from the western to the eastern front, but otherwise you mainly get a logical evolution. That’s a sideways shift rather than a step up, not a bad thing in this case. Verdun was not for everyone, but it succeeded with verve in its stated goal: to offer an authentic WW I experience. The First World War was fought simultaneously on two fronts. Verdun brought the static tug-of-war in the west to the fore, where the front line stretched from Flemish Ypres to the French-Swiss border, moving only a few kilometers in five years. Tannenberg tells the story of the massacres in the east, where the German and Russian armies came into contact with each other. To do justice to this story, we are presented with nine maps. From the rocky Carpathians via East Prussia to the bombed-out Poland… it all passes in review in Tannenberg. Loading screens provide interested parties with more information about the exact battle you are about to reenact. Information that is more than welcome for the history fans among us. Graphically, Tannenberg will not immediately win prizes. Variation also stands out due to its absence, although that naturally has its origin in the historical context of the game. Maps mainly consist of trenches, abandoned farms and vast miles of no man’s land full of bomb craters and barbed wire. These levels may not immediately capture your imagination, but they do work as true representations of the real thing. The same can be said about the weaponry. These historically correct shooting irons are suitably stiff to handle, including a steep learning curve. M2H thus again places authenticity above playability, a decision that we can certainly appreciate in these times of shooters with a high pick-and-play content. A game format that attempted to simulate the endless cycle of attacking, defending, and retreating from World War I. On the Eastern Front, the battle was a little different; more action was taken and less waiting. The result is another form of game – Maneuvers – that can best be described as Battlefields Conquest, but in a stiffer World War I setting. Both armies try to conquer as many zones on the battlefield as possible and thus rob the opponent of his resources. This approach requires more movement and thus leads to more explosive collisions, although they have certainly not become less deadly. After all, in Tannenberg it never pays to play the superhero. One bullet is usually enough for a one-way ticket to eternal hunting grounds, or the reload screen. As a result, you always have to work thoughtfully and preferably tactically. Sometimes this can be very nerve-wracking, especially if you encounter unexpected opposition several times in a row. Most of the time, however, this relentless difficulty makes for excruciatingly exciting scenarios. Sprinting from bomb crater to bomb crater under the barrage of a machine gun, for example, the heartbeat speeds up like a stone. A similar nightmare unfolds as you peer into the green, poisonous clouds with your gas mask, trying to find out in time where the enemy counterattack will come from. As already mentioned, the game is quite stiff, which reduces the accessibility considerably. It’s best not to aim loose, because even if you’re half a meter away from your opponent, your bullet will magically perform a circumferential movement and miss the target. Telling friend from foe is also tricky, which may be truthful for that time period, but it doesn’t play nicely. Finally, the soundtrack is appropriately rousing, but the accompanying voice work is regularly laughable. Try stabbing someone without laughing when you hear their over-the-top scream. The Wilhelm scream is nothing to it. Tannenberg is the second installment in the M2H and Black Mill Games WWI series; the first being Verdun which I haven’t played. However, Tannenberg seemed appealing to me so I decided to give it a go and I’m quite impressed with what it has to offer. Seeing as it takes place within the Eastern Front of WWI, you won’t be using high-powered modern firearms to take out your opponents. Instead, you have to utilize weaponry that generally takes a long time to load yet remains deadly nonetheless. Speaking of which, I appreciated watching my soldier reload the various firearms that I equipped as it’s interesting to see him do things like place bullets one at a time into the barrel as opposed to merely snapping in a large capacity magazine. Therefore, if you love history then you’ll definitely dig this.

Maneuvering, whoever does his best can learn it

The core gameplay of Tannenberg is exactly what you’d expect as you traverse maps while shooting enemy soldiers and trying not to get shot. However, there are many details such as the aforementioned methodical reloading that make it feel like a genuine WWI experience. With that being said, I’m fairly certain that they didn’t have automatic respawn technology in the early 20th century. Anyway, the main mode is Maneuver where you try and claim territory on a map in order to gradually deplete the opposing team’s resources. You can also enjoy Attrition team deathmatches and Rifle Deathmatch battle royal bouts if you wish although the vast majority of players are playing Maneuver mode. Capturing bases while the tug-of-war persists is a brilliant formula that offers oodles of online fun. The maps themselves take place across Eastern Europe and they are each intricate and impressively large. Every map features plenty of trenches and occasional structures that add a level of strategy to conquering territory, especially when you factor in super-powerful turret stations. You can also get snagged on barbed wire, call in support at certain base types, pick up found weapons, throw bombs that emit poison gas, and perform melee attacks. Plus, as you play, you’ll discover strategies and intricacies that you may not have noticed when you first started playing which is quite rewarding. Dead or Alive 6 

Although the maps are elaborate and full of the tension of war, I found the environmental visuals to be decent although a bit drab which I guess is authentic but it also wore me down after a while. Speaking of drab, the gameplay of Tannenberg is great fun but it does become exceptionally repetitive after playing it for an extended period of time. Therefore, it’s a fantastic game to pick up and play for 30 minutes to an hour every once in a while so that the repetition takes longer to sink in. Another issue that frequently annoyed me is just how many times I perished. For the record, I’m terrible at first-person shooters but with Tannenberg in particular, almost every single death caught me by surprise because opposing players will sneak up behind you and kill you with 1 shot and there’s no way to know that they’re there in time. On the other hand, I sneaked through an enemy base solo once and shot a few soldiers in a row then claimed the base for my team which felt awesome. In the end, constantly waiting to respawn is annoying but if you have patience then eventually perform a cool feat on the battlefield, it pays off. In its relentless pursuit of authenticity, Tannenberg allows players to take roles in the Russian, Roumanian, Latvian, Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian armies of the time, as they engage in a variety of battles that span the width and breadth of the Eastern Front.

Clearly, developers M2H and Blackmill Games have done their homework here too, as the uniforms which are bespoke to each army are highly detailed and wholly representative of what those troops wore into battle over one hundred years ago. Beyond painstakingly detailed uniforms, Tannenberg also strives for a feeling of authenticity with the nationalities of the troops themselves, in which each soldier actually speaks the language of their native tongue on the battlefield; something that is a world away from the accented English seen in other war games. Such strides towards realism are seen in many other places within Tannenberg’s overarching design too. Death, for example, comes extremely quickly in Tannenberg as there’s none of the bullet-soakery that permeates other shooter shooters. In Tannenberg, if you get shot, you get dead – it’s that simple. Speaking of getting shot, in so many other shooters, the reliability of your firearm is often taken for granted but in Tannenberg, your firearm can get jammed, requiring you to un-jam it in quick fashion. Imagine the horror as you peer over the top of an artillery crater, Arisaka Type 30 rifle gripped tightly in your hand, you line up a kill-shot and then *click*, the rifle jams and then the enemy whirls around on your position. Exhilarating, yes. Terrifying? Yep, that too. Then there’s the incredible audio work that developers Black mill Games and M2H have wrought here. Dead Rising 3 Apocalypse Edition 

Whether it’s the distinctive crack of the Martini Henry rifle signalling the gun dealing out its grim wager, or the heart-stopping, rapid pop of the Steyr-Hahn handgun, all the firearms in Tannenberg impressively feel, look and sound like the real deal. Battlefield Tactics And Realistic FPS Mechanics Converge With Aplomb In Tannenberg Like Verdun before it, Tannenberg is so much more than just a first-person shooter that happens to be set during the Great War. Without a single-player campaign mode to speak of (though the game does allow for AI bots in some modes), Tannenberg is resolutely an online multiplayer shooter and it’s here that it should absolutely be played in order to maximize your enjoyment of it. Though Tannenberg offers up the usual smattering of deathmatch and competitive multiplayer modes, it’s arguably in the new maneuvers mode that Blackmill Games latest effort succeeds in underscoring the difference between itself and other shooters. Similar in theory and execution to a regular territory occupational game type, maneuvers has two sides wrestling for control over key districts and areas in key scenarios which span the conflicts of the Eastern Front. Where Tannenberg differs however, is in how each district and area provides meaningful incentives for each side. Occupying a military outpost will provide additional ammo for your troops, while an artillery position for example, will reduce the cooldown on the next time you can call in shelling or scout aircraft support.

As such, success in maneuvers is dictated by much more than just how quickly (and accurately) you can pull the trigger. Whether you’re ordering in units to attack an enemy position, consolidating a position under attack, calling gas attacks in on an enemy position or using your captured territory to outflank your foes, the tactical opportunities that Tannenberg provide the player with are satisfyingly and rewardingly vast. Tannenberg is as much a match of wits as it is one of physical mettle. And really, there’s nothing quite so satisfying as ordering your unit to charge over hill towards a fortified enemy stronghold that just seconds before has come under heavy fire from your own artillery batteries, or snatching victory from the jaws of defeat by holding off a determined enemy player advance in a central position with a depleted unit of troops. Tannenberg is filled with these sorts of moments, where its tactical decision making and gunplay blends to create a sort of battlefield theatre where anything can happen and where, more importantly, the spectacle feels grounded, rather than eye-rollingly overblown. For long tenured Verdun players, Tannenberg ushers in a whole host of other welcome new features too. Within each army exist specialized squads that have special abilities, such as improved cooldowns and stamina regeneration with more becoming available, as the player gains experience from killing enemies and completing objectives.
