Now, your dad who’s the captain of the ship is bedridden and has a long list of tasks for you to complete in his stead. First up is finding the rest of the crew that have been stranded on the neighbouring islands. In order to find them, you need to get a boat together and ensure that you have enough stamina to make it to the farther reaches of the sea so you’ll need to plant and grow crops to feed your appetite. Stranded Sails is an exploration game foremost so if you were interested in the farming sim gameplay, you will likely be disappointed. Farming involves digging holes, sowing seeds, watering at least once a day, and harvesting crops. Crops are used for a couple of things like you can throw a bunch of crops into a big pot and make a stew for the crew. Consuming stew will fill up your stamina gauge nicely and if you match the right crop to the right crew member when making a stew, you’ll get a nice boost in levelling it up. Crops are also used in recipes for stored meals that you’ll make good use of on long treks. Unlocking new recipes happens when you uncover ingredients in your travels then you have to play a fun mini-game in order to figure out the correct mix of ingredients. You progress in the story by completing a list of tasks that are provided by the crew members which generally involve building your base on the island and uncovering the mysteries of the surrounding islands. Most of the tasks involve sailing to one of the islands to look for something. Some of the islands are large and fun to explore with a variety of beaches, forests, hills, and caves and there are also sections to unlock later once you’re able to craft bridges and climbing rope kits. However, the fact that you unlock the islands early on and are then constantly tasked with returning to the same islands means that you’ll quickly lose the joy of adventuring. It should have had you explore the depths of one island at a time and additional variety in the island scenery would have been welcome, too. One of the complaints that I’ve heard about Stranded Sails is its focus on stamina as everything you do consumes it including walking. However, I didn’t find this to be a problem in my playthrough because it can be restored quickly by eating stew or consuming prepared meals. You can return to your base at any time from the map so if you’re running low, this becomes very handy. Finally, even when you run out of stamina, you simply miss an opportunity to water crops and are taken directly to bed. Crops are bountiful when you’re a few hours in so there’s no real problem here.

A Farmer’s Life For Me

There’s also no calendar or measurement of time other than the day / night cycle so you won’t miss a calendar event like you can in Story of Seasons. In the end, stamina won’t be your biggest problem in Stranded Sails. One aspect that detracts from the fun is the monotony of getting around the islands. You must walk or run everywhere and you’re often tasked with talking to someone far away then told to go right back to the person who originally sent you. When you want to explore an island, you row there which takes such a long time that I literally fell asleep once then drained all of my stamina after I dozed off waiting for my character to reach the southern-most island. There really should be multiple teleportation spots on these islands to make getting around easier. Without them, it feels like the tedium of travel is just a way to pad out Stranded Sails’ total gameplay time Stranded Sails’ controls take some getting used to and ultimately feel like they’d be less out of place on PC. Namely, you press left or right on the right analog stick to choose a section to navigate through then up and down to select an item in that section. There are the odd helpful hints in the early hours of the game but even with those, it took me a long time to understand this system due to its confusing wheel-like setup. You can access anything you need in your unlimited inventory but having to cycle through your tools can get annoying when you’re trying to find your sword and are being attacked by a pirate ghost, for example. Finally, Stranded Sails has some unique-looking graphics that bring the islands to life. I appreciated the subtlety in the changing current of the ocean as I rowed between the islands and the soft background music nicely matches the laidback pacing which lets you take things at your own speed. However, I don’t understand what happened with the animation of the main character and how they walk. It looks like they’re half walking on quick sand and half floating and it put me off a little right from the start. Other than that, there aren’t many animations that occur as other characters remain stationary and there are no animals at all. You and your fellow explorers are ready to see the world and settle down in a foreign land. But after an unexpected storm, you are shipwrecked. An archipelago with five islands to explore is exciting, but you and your crew are stranded! With the captain wounded in the wreck, it is your job to maintain a camp, feed your fellow explorers, and eventually escape!

Island Relaxation

This survival adventure game is for the most part a peaceful, serene way to pass some time. There is plenty of farming to do, and growing your garden is so satisfying. As you explore the island, you can find new crops to plant and then harvest them for recipes. The cooking component of the game is interesting. Discovering new recipes requires using trial and error. While this is fun and adds a level of difficulty, sometimes it can be hard to remember which combinations have been tested and failed. Once you cook yourself some food, you are ready to explore further. Doing most tasks requires energy, and some dishes replenish more energy than others. You must be careful not to run out of energy or you pass out and wake up back at your camp. This comes into play when fighting enemies as well, as energy is used up as you fight and when you are hurt. This makes fights a strategic challenge, because simply hacking and slashing opponents could leave your energy depleted. On the various islands there are plenty of treasures and materials to discover. Back at the camp you can craft different components from the things you find to help build shelters and improve you temporary home. This makes your fellow explorers happy and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Along with all of these survival/adventure mechanics, the game follows a loose story structure that gives you objectives. As you explore the island, you discover more about the mysteries it holds. If you continue to push through the story, you’ll hopefully find a way to escape the island. Once I became comfortable with the controls, cycling through all the different items in my inventory became effortless. I preferred playing this game docked rather than in handheld mode. A peaceful adventure game like this begs to be played while relaxing on the couch and enjoying the vibrant colors on a big screen. While it isn’t the most gripping adventure, fans of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing will probably enjoy it. Stranded Sails starts you off on the docks of a city where your father and a group of crew members are waiting for you on a beautiful ship, ready to set sail on the high seas. Of course, your ship is torn asunder by a terrible storm, and you end up on an archipelago where you must set up a camp and search for your crew. You end up establishing a home base with a small plot of arable land and a source of freshwater close by, and it’s your job to grow crops, cook food, and explore the island for characters and clues. This is pretty much all you do. For the first handful of hours in the game, the story revolves around finding the crew and building a house for every single one, all the while maintaining your little plot of crops. It wouldn’t be so bad of a premise if it weren’t for the extremely monotonous execution of these tasks.

No Treasure Here

Stranded Sails uses an energy system to drive the game, meaning every action you perform uses up a chunk of energy and the only way to stay fueled is to eat food that you cook or go to sleep on the remains of the ship that’s nestled on the shore. As you will quickly learn should you pick up this game yourself, the energy system is the double-edged sword of Stranded Sails: on one side, it’s a ridiculously tedious mechanic that offers no real consequence if you drain all of it and die, and on the other it’s the one and only element of the game that actually gives a point to all of the farming and cooking you have to muscle through. The basic mechanics of the game invite you to plant seeds, water them and wait for them to grow and then use the harvested crops to cook new recipes. There is also a resource crafting element for building things such as shelters and bridges. Both the workshop and the cooking station are located next to your plot, and the only way to discover new recipes for food is to endure the crazy system of throwing in a certain number of ingredients and blindly combining different plants until you guess the right combination. You will never be told what recipe you’re trying to create, nor will you be told what to combine. Each recipe has a corresponding energy value, meaning the more advanced recipes you uncover later in the game will grant a higher energy recovery boost that will allow you to explore for longer. This is where Stranded Sails relies on its energy mechanic to add substance to the game. Without the energy system, there would be absolutely no point to farming or cooking at all, as the crafting system isn’t tiered the way it is in a game like Stardew Valley; where you always want to maximize what you’re farming in order to make money to expand your house, purchase more animals, upgrade tools, and more. Stranded Sails doesn’t feel flawed so much as just plain cumbersome. The storyline is linear, though you do little more than fetch-quests and menial tasks for a lazy group of sailors. Everybody wants a house, which means lots of running around looking for trees to chop for you — but not too fast, because that’ll cost you energy. The default run speed of your character is basically between a walk and a jog, and sprinting will deplete you at a pretty strong rate. Never mind the devastating amount of energy it takes to chop down enough trees to craft anything, which is tedious in the beginning of the game because your inventory is so small and the low-grade food you cook at first is not very restorative. Should you drain all of your energy, you simply pass out and wake up again on the ship.

No progress or inventory items are lost, and frankly, sometimes it’s a convenient method of fast traveling if you’re far out on the island and don’t feel like slowly trudging all the way back. One shortcoming I found in the game is the complete lack of animals on the island. There’s one parrot flying around that plays a role in the story, but other than that, you won’t see lots of birds in the trees or squirrels in the forest. The farming component encompasses plants only, so you’ll never get to raise cows or chickens like you can in almost every other farming game. It’s a shame, because it would add a lot more charm to the wildlife of the island and a lot more fun and incentive to the gameplay. Incentive is a buzzword that kept coming to mind during my time with Stranded Sails. It doesn’t feel like there’s almost any incentive to continue playing the game, even in the first couple hours. The story takes far too long to grip you, and the quests just flat out feel like work. Your original plot of land can be expanded over the course of the game, but it doesn’t even feel like there’s a reason to do this as the crops you can grow on your small plot are more than enough to feed you and your crew. Every action takes so long and uses so much energy that it’s also off-putting in a lot of ways, especially when it comes to venturing out on the island.  Stranded Sails does deserve credit where its due in some aspects. It wholly succeeds at being a peaceful and tranquil experience with its amazing sound design.
