The premise is suitably zany and as a result, a fun, light-hearted atmosphere resides as characters engage in cheerful conversation. Missions and side-missions arise from these discussions. You will need to wander the environment and perform an array of soccer-related tasks to gain the support of citizens and progress the narrative. Panic Barn has done a great job at keeping soccer as the focus. The missions themselves are primarily environment-based. Due to this, frustration can quickly ensue as you are often required to scour the area in search of items or locations. Most missions tend to include some collection aspect, which can create a monotonous feel to proceedings. However, objectives that rely on soccer are much more fun. At times, you will need to use a controlled shot by aiming with your right stick to hit targets within a certain time frame or perform other joyful tasks such as passing the ball into bins to get them upright. Your goal is to play against recognized teams with your motley crew. As you progress, you and your teammates will level up. You are given the option to select which stats to improve so that you can build the team how you want. This adds a nice element of personalization as you can build your player with the speed of Mbappé or the strength of Ibrahimović. Unfortunately, upgrades of certain skills are locked until particular parts of the story. While this adds structure, it makes progression more restrictive. Arcade renditions of the sport are difficult to achieve. Virtua Striker, Sensible Soccer and Soccer Sidekicks maintain the same ideals that are within simulators but interpret them in a simplified manner. Another approach is adding chaos to the premise which is evident in Mario Strikers, Rocket League and Rayman Legends’ Kung Foot. Soccer Story lies at the halfway line between these. The simple controls mean that anyone can jump in and play, but it’s on the pitch where the issues surface.

Movement is intuitive but is redundant due to the size of the pitch. You can boost past the odd player and cross it in but you are unable to use quick turns to lose the defender. Passing can be awkward. Audacious attempts often fall flat and short, simple passes are easily intercepted. While you can crack the ball at full pelt, keepers can fly around the net like Superman and will save most of your shots. Due to this, you will often need to wait for a rebound to affect the scoresheet. It’s a very normal part of the gaming industry for an out-of-the-blue smash hit to define a subgenre and, in the process, inspire a number of similar games. When Golf Story arrived on Switch in 2017, taking the RPG slant of Game Boy Color’s Mario Golf and pushing it in new directions, it set a particular tone for lighthearted narrative and a quirky take on its sport; inevitably, then, Soccer Story has drawn inspiration and applied similar ideas with its own spin on the beautiful game. We don’t make the comparison as a criticism, and indeed developer PanicBarn makes its own jokes and acknowledgements of its reference sources. The question then becomes whether Soccer Story has enough of its own ideas, and quality of execution, to become a worthy addition to this subgenre of pixel-based comedic sporting adventures. The overall story of Soccer Story is charming, albeit it’s not particularly creative or surprising. So begins a quest to persuade hero animals to play once again, all while taking on tournaments and improving your team’s abilities. Most of your time, like in the aforementioned Golf Story, is spent not playing the sport, at least in its formal guise. You have a magic ball and explore the world, carry out side quests, and generally kick your ball at everything. You visit a colourful, charming set of locations, with the world being relatively small but packed with tasks and items to discover. Activities have some decent variety too, whether it’s hitting targets, solving simple puzzles, or occasionally scripted challenges that offer throwbacks to other games and genres. There’s repetition as you progress, however, and the story structure falls into that trap to some degree. The pattern for each area is largely the same: arrive, learn why teams aren’t playing football, run around on errands to help those teams, then play them in a mini tournament. That is a slight complaint, as from start to finish it feels a little too familiar as you move between areas (right down to often re-used dialogue lines), but overall the world has enough personality to drive you on. The actual football, whether in games of 5-a-side or even 1v1 showdowns, is mixed. In its simplicity it can be fun, albeit we found we would either win easily in Medium difficulty or sometimes win ‘cheaply’ in Hard; at least you can change difficulty on the fly. Gameplay here is very basic, even after some additional abilities unlock later in the quest. The biggest flaw is the goalkeepers; they are either terrible or outstanding, with serious AI flaws that allow some pointless long-range shots to score.

Before long you end up doing a messy mix of kick-and-rush and gegenpress to win, and it’s not always particularly satisfying. Not that we think it’s worth devoting time to, but it’s also worth mentioning that a ‘Quick Game’ option does exist to play locally with friends, too. In the end the actual football matches are competent, but the fun in this title — a little ironically — is away from the pitch. Thankfully, then, most of your time is spent off the pitch on the aforementioned quests, exploring every nook and cranny in the process. There’s a sizeable cast of NPCs and decent humour and writing to be found, and simply running around the world is a pleasure. On the technical side we have a slightly mixed bag, but it’s mostly positive. The overall look is excellent, blending pixel and voxel looks with some lovely art design, some of which appears like a sharp HD take on visual styles prominent in the DS / 3DS era. Visuals are a positive, though we encourage you to ignore the ‘Quality’ setting in favour of ‘Performance’; the former only adds unnecessary extra shadows while tanking the frame rate, but the game looks good and runs pretty well on the latter setting. We did encounter some technical hiccups, however. Our original build had us stumble across a game-breaking bug, though thankfully this was fixed in a launch day patch. Even on the updated version we experienced a few crashes, though the generous autosave meant we would only lose a minute or two of progress. It’s not too frequent, but you’ll likely encounter this and some other small bugs. The audio and soundtrack is a little average too, but ultimately isn’t a big factor in how much you’ll enjoy running around the world and exploring. Overall, this game doesn’t match the quality of the title it openly cites as inspiration (even the menus and fonts are very familiar) and Sports Story — Golf Story’s official follow-up — is set to arrive on Switch shortly. Yet Sidebar Games sets a high bar, and it’s also the case that Soccer Story is full of heart and evident passion from the PanicBarn team, leaving us with a reasonably entertaining take on the subgenre with a quirky football/soccer spin. Despite not caring about the FIFA and eFootball games, I’ve always enjoyed checking out Sports Interactive’s Football Manager series almost every year. While I skipped the last two main PC releases, having access to a more-streamlined release on Xbox with Xbox Game Pass has been a great middle ground. With Football Manager 2023, SEGA brings Football Manager 2023 Touch to not just Switch, but also Apple Arcade. iPhone and Android get access to Football Manager 2023 Mobile on the other side, and we also have Football Manager 2023 Console coming to PS5 soon following its release on Xbox platforms. With all the editions out of the way, I’ve been having a lot of fun with Football Manager 2023 Touch on Apple Arcade and Nintendo Switch. Since this version of the game is on multiple Apple devices and Nintendo Switch, I was curious to see how it scales and runs across newer and older devices.

In recent years, SEGA has also brought it to console platforms. I haven’t played Football Manager Touch since the first Nintendo Switch release and it has been interesting to see how much more the Touch version of the game has this year compared to a few years ago. Both the Nintendo Switch and Apple Arcade versions of Football Manager 2023 Touch support controllers and touch controls. On my iPhone, I opted to play with my Razer Kishi V2 since the touch targets are a bit small while the iPad version feels great to play with touch on my iPad Pro. On Nintendo Switch, I stuck to touch controls in handheld mode and a controller when docked. Both control options work well, but I’m very surprised at how good it feels with a controller. The 3D match engine holds up relatively well visually on Switch, but it isn’t smooth. On iPad Pro, it runs and looks a lot better. Barring that, the menus are also more responsive with quicker loading on iPad Pro than Switch. The Switch version is currently behind when it comes to updates as well. These issues add up to make it harder to recommend at its asking price. I did run into one issue with the Apple Arcade version of Football Manager 2023 Touch with how my saves were not syncing across devices initially. I hope this is more reliable with future updates. Barring that, Football Manager 2023 Touch is a nice step up over the game I played a few years ago, and it controls very well on Nintendo Switch and Apple Arcade.

I just hope some of the issues on Switch can be addressed alongside updates arriving on time. Soccer Story, developed by Panic Barn, unabashedly takes inspiration from the critically successful sports RPG, Golf Story. Their similarities are undeniable, but the quality of each is separated by more than just the difference in sports. While Soccer Story delivers on presentation, it lacks the challenge and comical tone it strives so hard for, and players looking for more than tedious quests and surface level commentary will be disappointed. The game begins with the downfall of soccer as the world knows it. After the most popular soccer tournament concludes with an explosive ending that damages the field and the players’ spirits, an evil soccer corporation known as Soccer Inc. takes the sport over. And thus, the player’s journey to bring back the love and care for the sport initiates, and the game’s issues become more apparent. The biggest problem the sports RPG Soccer Story faces is its core game loop. The story is split into two main sections: exploring the open-world and competing in soccer matches. However, the open-world dominates most of the playtime. In this, the player will collect and complete missions to convince residents to go back to playing their favorite sport. A majority of these quests, whether they be side quests or mainline quests, involve running from one location to another to find or kick the ball into something. Once completing that, the player will then be told to go do the same thing, but in another location.

It’s a rinse-and-repeat formula that not only stains the granular moments of the game, but the main narrative and competitive soccer matches as well. There are brief moments where the RPG brings some creative ideas to its puzzle designs, such as beating up mushrooms with specific combos found from billboards around a town, but they are too spread out to justify the amount of mindless content that surrounds it. A potential solution to this problem is to reward or incentivize the player to keep completing quests with a compelling narrative or endearing characters. But Soccer Story only offers one-dimensional dialogue with a whimsical tone that is found in every single character, which distorts any possibility of individuality in the story. However, the blend of pixel 2D and voxel 3D art styles across the open-world creates a compelling tone that the story never does. It’s a vibrant world split into different regions, with most having a distinct feel to them. The beautiful backdrop can, at times, ease the growing frustration of the repeated mission structure.
