Shadows Over Loathing  Free Download Unfitgirl If you were playing a standard RPG you probably wouldn’t put an item called a Ring of Weakness on your finger. But an Inside-Out Ring of Weakness? “When you put this on, you’re technically the only person not wearing it,” the ring’s description explains. “Everybody but you loses 1 of each stat at the start of combat.” This is the sort of clever silliness you’ll discover roughly every 30 seconds when you step into Shadows Over Loathing(opens in new tab), a new and completely unannounced (until today(opens in new tab)) 2D stick-figure RPG from Asymmetric Productions, makers of long-running online RPG Kingdom of Loathing and 2017’s ridiculously funny singleplayer RPG West of Loathing. It’s out on Steam right now, just like that. I know it’s not Starfield, the game that was supposed to launch on 11/11/22. But does Starfield let you eat interdimensional hot dogs or drink bottles of pork soda while you’re beating gun-toting fairies over the head with a guitar? I’m guessing it doesn’t. Set in the 1920s, Shadows Over Loathing begins when I pay a visit to Ocean City to help out my Uncle Murrary, who runs an antique shop. But when I arrive, Murray is missing, so I set out to find him. Along the way I meet and talk to dozens of oddball characters, solve puzzles, gather a collection of cursed artifacts, try on a number of hats, and battle with gatormen, gangsters, goblins, and other bizarre and silly enemies in turn-based combat. As you can tell, a lot happens in Shadows Over Loathing, and it all happens very quickly. I was just a guy looking for his uncle but now I’m also a legit Cheese Wizard: I have a perk called Fondue Deluge that causes a rain of burning fromage to fall on my enemies. My magic wand is a set of enchanted barbeque tongs that do heat damage, but also does some bleed damage because I glued a razor to them. I was briefly a dinosaur, I’ve thrown a nuke at a crowd of angry robots, I can harvest roaches for milk, and I solved a murder mystery on a moving train faster than Hercule Poirot could wax his moustache. This is all within just a few hours of play, and I’m not even sure how much of the game is left. Hopefully, plenty more, because so far it’s been a heck of a lot of fun. In my inventory is a huge jumble of items like a baklava (which I found inside a balaclava), some loose radiation (I can eat it if I choose to), a pair of foot gloves (they let me walk on my hands for no reason other than it’s funny to do so), fireproof gardening pants that regenerate my HP, a “nasty mop” (for stink damage), and my grandfather’s teeth (I honestly can’t remember where I found them, but it might have been in a dream). As in West of Loathing, you can learn the locations of new places to visit on your 2D open world map—Ocean City’s layout is scrawled on a cocktail napkin, another map is drawn on a slice of cheese—but you’ll uncover several new regions by talking to other characters, accepting quests, or even by randomly wandering around. As you move from place to place.

Shadows Over Loathing Superior stick-figure customization.

you’ll usually run into a random encounter along the way, which could be combat, a vendor, or a conversation with some goofball that presents a few dialogue choices. I even ran into myself once while wandering, and we high-fived. Unlike most RPGs, where I’m eager to end conversations and get to the combat, it’s the opposite here. Talking to the weirdos of this world is the highlight. Every shred of text in a conversation, on a sign, in a book, or even in my inventory, is another chance for the developer to squeeze in a couple more jokes. Quests sometimes start out simple—go into the office at the local college—and then sprawl out to ridiculous lengths—you need to be a college graduate to go through that door, so please get a degree at the college first. No, really. Pick your major and some elective classes, and graduate. That’s the only way you’re getting through that door. Puzzles range from simple to surprisingly difficult, and I’d definitely recommend keeping a notepad handy to jot things down, especially if you come across some weird detail and you’re not sure where it fits in yet. While I didn’t love the turn-based combat in West of Loathing, I’m enjoying it mightily here, probably due to the sheer number of different items I can use in the fight, from revolvers to sporks to an ice-cream scoop that does cold damage, not to mention the potions I can glug or the “food” I can eat before a fight to give me a multitude of buffs. Add in all the throwable objects like baseballs, globs of unbaked dough, seltzer grenades, and a leftover rocket from the Cola Wars, and every battle feels like I’m spoiled for options. That said, cleverly written as Shadows Over Loathing is, I haven’t laughed out loud quite as much while playing it as I did with West of Loathing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still highly entertaining with more throwaway jokes per minute than most games contain in their entirety, but I’d have to say (at least so far) it’s not quite as funny as West of Loathing. This may be due to the setting: the Wild West is just an amazingly ripe backdrop for humor, and early 20th century America isn’t quite as fertile ground. Or it may just be that West of Loathing set the bar incredibly high by being one of the funniest games ever made. Either way, I’ve really enjoyed the hours I’ve spent with Shadows Over Loathing so far, and it feels like there’s a lot left. I still haven’t found my uncle, there are plenty of blank spots on my maps, and while my inventory is positively bursting with ridiculous items like fairy wands, a dirty saxophone, and a baseball cap made of stone, I’ve got the feeling there’s room for plenty more. Shadows Over Loathing isn’t a sequel per se: it tells its own story and features its own characters. And so, you don’t need to have played West of Loathing to jump in. It’s very much set in the same universe, though: a gloriously sparse stick-figure universe that’s simply wonderful.

A corrupt government for you to overthrow at your leisure.

Who needs 4K HDR when you can have black-and-white stick figures? We’re serious: we can’t imagine playing Shadows of Loathing with any other art style. This text-heavy RPG tasks you with travelling to Ocean City in response to a letter sent from your uncle. It seems he needs some help at his antique shop, but when you get there, your uncle is nowhere to be found. And his antique shop isn’t exactly what it seems: it’s a front for an organisation that hunts down cursed objects in order to uncurse them. It seems one of his missions went awry, and so you’re going to have to help his colleagues on their uncursing mission. No problem. Right? Like West of Loathing, there’s a main story to follow through, taking you to various locations, introducing you to plenty of weird and wonderful characters and throwing you into a mixture of combat and puzzles. There’s also a huge number of side quests to take on. This is an incredibly clever game, with wonderfully witty writing and very well-designed puzzles. Sometimes it feels perhaps a little too clever for its own good: we’re not ashamed to admit that some of the puzzles we encountered – particularly those in the University – had us well and truly stumped. After all, how many other games have you frantically Googling ‘descending pentatonic scales’? Exactly. It’s an absolute joy though, even when you are scratching your head over eloquent music puzzles and robot programming. Developer Asymmetric has managed to pack in so much personality into a world made of black and white lines, and that is a huge feat in itself. Dyna Bomb 2 Switch NSP

Every new place you visit is a joy, and exploring buildings, parks and open spaces will undoubtedly be one of your favourite parts of the experience. You never know what’s going to be waiting for you – and poking around nooks and crannies will undoubtedly reveal a useful item, some witty remark, or a side quest to add to your journal. There’s a surprisingly deep amount of character development, too. There are weird and wonderful weapons and pieces of equipment to be found, all adding to your stats in some way. Finding the right items can enhance your existing weapons, too, though you’ll probably want to frequently switch to something new you’ve found. Most actions you complete will earn you XP, and that XP can be used to add various skill points to your repertoire. Single-use items can also be used to buff your stats temporarily; you’ll often need to use one in order to complete a side-quest. You might need extra ‘stench armor’ before you can have a poke around a pile of rubbish, for example. Combat in Shadows Over Loathing is turn-based, with you able to spend at least one ability point and carry out a basic attack each turn. If you choose to, you’ll also be accompanied by a pet, who attacks automatically, and a companion, who has a few basic actions you can choose from. Actions are straightforward and there’s nothing technically taxing here, but if you haven’t been spending your XP and making sure you’ve got the best gear equipped you’ll soon find yourself getting your butt kicked. All dialogue and storytelling in Shadows Over Loathing is delivered via text – there’s no narration or voice acting to be found here.

Thousands and thousands of jokes, gags, and goofs.

Honestly, it wouldn’t feel right if there was: it’s all part of the game’s barebones aesthetic. Every piece of text you come across in the game though, whether it’s a conversation or flavour text describing a random encounter, is so well-written that you’ll lap it up. Sure, you can glance over most of it if you want, but you’ll miss out doing so. Few games are as delightfully-written and as witty as this. Asymmetric has some serious writing talent on its team. When I think about jokes that make me laugh in games—a topic I covered, with some mild despair, in an article about the generally dire state of comedy in the medium back in 2020—there are a few stand-out moments that come immediately to mind. Most of both Portal games. The meaner jokes in Sam And Max Hit The Road. The Stanley Parable. And, of course, The Spittoon Gag from Asymmetric’s West Of Loathing, one of the funniest bits of long-form comedy writing ever to be featured in gaming, a gleefully gross ode to the fact that, if you put a container—any container, even one that is, at minimum, filled to the brim with the tobacco-infused spit of other human beings—in a video game, some dumb-curious player is going to stick their arm in it to see what they get. Ever since the surprisingly deep stick-figure RPG West Of Loathing (and its extremely good DLC, Reckonin’ At Gun Manor) came out a few years ago, fans have been wondering what Asymmetric would get up to next. (Besides maintaining their also-very-funny web game, Kingdom Of Loathing, of course.) Said fans found out this morning.

when the indie studio announced the existence—and immediate release—of Shadows Over Loathing, a secret, fully-fledged sequel to West Of Loathing, which is now out on Steam today. I’ve been playing Shadows Over Loathing over the last few weeks, on conditions that emphasize how seriously the game’s devs were taking this whole “surprise drop” thing. (Shout-out to any of my Steam friends who’ve been wondering why the hell I’ve been putting so many hours into “Generic Game Name” of late.) And I’m happy to report that Asymmetric has made a worthy successor to one of the funniest games of all time, a deeper and more elaborate follow-up that doesn’t sacrifice the first game’s devotion to widespread silliness. As the name implies, Shadows ditches the Old West setting of the first game in favor of a 1920s-inspired world drenched in more overt references to Lovecraft and other horror authors. (An early, and very typical, gag reveals that the West isn’t even “West” anymore; progress-minded compass manufacturers have recently rolled out “New West,” which is actually just North.) Instead of demonic cows and evil rodeo clowns, players will now fend off vampiric flappers, confused fishmen, and a whole host of shadow creatures that tie into the game’s more rigorously structured plot, which tasks the player character with traveling to various locales to find and recover cursed objects. Shadows benefits strongly from the discipline this plot structure imposes on it: While you can still explore in a more free-form manner, having larger quests at the center of each major location adds welcome focus to a game that could otherwise meander at times.

It also adds genuinely exciting climax points to each chapter—either the conflicts to acquire the relics, or, more often than not, the metaphysical sequences that follow them when you try to break the curse. Besides being some of the most interesting puzzle designs in the game, the curse sequences also emphasize how Asymmetric has dialed into the horror elements that lurked in the background of West Of Loathing, creating genuinely unsettling moments out of little more than text (and surprisingly detailed stick figure art). That puzzle design, along with the comedy, was a major part of what made West Of Loathing so compelling, allowing almost any situation to be approached from multiple angles. (Something emphasized here by the introduction of a “pacifist” mode that allows you to opt out of the game’s engaging, but not super-deep, combat entirely, in favor of finding sometimes very convoluted ways to get out of fights.) Shadows Over Loathing shares that devotion to respecting player choice—including the choice to just wade in and smack some gatormen in the face with cheese-based magicks, regardless of whether that’s the “right” thing to do. If you liked West Of Loathing, Shadows Over Loathing is a slam dunk, ably matching, and often even besting, the things that made that game great. If you skipped it—but if the idea of a silly-scary role-playing game that emphasizes thinking your way around problems and encountering some of the best writing in modern games appeals—then this is a perfect point to jump into what I’m very happy to discover is now a genuine gaming franchise.
