Much has been written and heard since the day the title was first announced and shown at E3. “FromSoftware’s Nioh” or a “Dark Souls with samurais” were probably the most common. None of this is true because after all Sekiro is something much bigger and more important in the field of video games. Anyone who thought that FromSoftware can only make games according to one template can boldly change their life attitudes. Not that the Japanese creators have perhaps turned their backs on what made their titles famous in their new Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – the well-known basis remains, but it is embellished with so many novelties, fresh changes and an original, fantastically refined combat system that borders on with the genius that in the end you hardly recognize the “souls” core. To any Souls veteran, Sekiro’s timing-based lock-on combat of strikes and slashes is familiar, as is the way you weave through the same excellently designed levels that snake, interconnect, and double back on themselves to reveal new shortcuts between little bastions of safety to resupply.
