Second Front Free Download Unfitgirl Advanced Squad Leader, the hex-and-chit World War II game legend, came out in 1985, even before I was born. It has only ever looked approachable once while reading the rules. That was before I realized how trying to keep all the rules straight is what turns me into a stressed-out mess in any game. That’s why I am very happy to see that Second Front — the closest thing to ASL PC adaptation — has finally come out. As mentioned before, Second Front is a World War II game. It ships with three factions: the US, Germany, and Russia (USSR), and is meant to recreate both European fronts of the war. You have all the main tanks, trucks, and guns to take you from September 1939 to 1945. Admittedly, the Americans didn’t have much going for them when the Nazis invaded Poland, so their arsenal only begins somewhere around the introduction of the M3. In any case, you can watch all of them explode in around a dozen scenarios per country (except the Germans, who get two sets: one for fighting Americans and one for Russians), as well as a few simple campaigns. Second Front is a turn-based tactics game, where an individual unit can be a squad (or half-squad), an officer, a weapon team, or a single vehicle. However, having your turn doesn’t mean that you can run around the map unopposed — this isn’t Warhammer 40,000. Even on your movement and fire phase, the enemy troops can fire on targets that waltz into their sight. Unfitgirl.COM SEXY GAMES

What’s more, your movement phase is followed by the enemy fire phase, in which foes that haven’t shot their load on overwatch can now fire at eligible targets. This is followed by the escape phase, in which broken units of both players automatically skedaddle. Then you get your advance phase, which lets infantry move a single hex without getting shot at — or enter into melee. Fisticuffs are resolved in the melee phase, followed by the end phase where units check to rally or fix their weapons. So Second Front is somewhat simplified compared to ASL, but I don’t mind. I’d probably get a brain hemorrhage from trying to play a single turn of the real thing, let alone go in for its many modules, like Red Barricades. On the other hand, while I am sometimes a bit confused in Second Front, it is eminently playable, rewards you for being slow and meticulous as well as aggressive, and tracks not only vehicle armor facings, but also turret armor and rotation separate from the hull. Plus, it keeps track of all the rules in modifiers, often explaining it via easily readable pictograms. I don’t need to know exactly what penalty I’m getting to my accuracy. And the penalties aren’t in any way exotic. Units fire worse after moving (and don’t move after firing), tanks fire better if the commander has his nogging out (unless it’s one of the early war marvels where the commander is the gunner), infantry moves, shoots, and rallies better if stacked with an officer. So while there is plenty of stuff happening under the hood, I’m free to wage the battle. And since Second Front is a heavily scenario-based game, I can’t even do army building shenanigans.

Build your own war

What I can partake in is sending a single squad forward to recon and draw reaction fire instead of doing that with a whole platoon. I can move my troops as an officer-driven blob while out of enemy sight and then spread out on contact, sacrificing some of that directed fire to present a lot more targets. And if my careful use of terrain allows me to sneak up a unit close enough, that the one-hex crawl move puts in the hex next to the enemy. With that, I’m only a single advance phase away from melee. The feeling is magical. Notably, both the “gameyness” of rushing the capture point and protracted battles against the dregs of the enemy force are prevented by tracking the ratio of remaining infantry units. Grab the point early and you’ll still have to whittle down the foes to the point where the towel is thrown. Setting a scenario (or a campaign, though you’ll have to read up on doing it in the manual) is almost easier than making a map. You can even bake in replayability by setting alternate positions for guns to appear in any given playthrough. I also love the fact that by setting the date, your access to the armory will be limited to what was available at that time. Now, if I was to complain about Second Front, the first thing that would come to my mind is the tutorial. It’s split into bite-sized chunks, and for a good reason: all the information is given in a briefing at the start of it, so you better memorize that going forward. And despite the best wishes of the developer, that’s not very easy to do, especially for folks new to the genre. Darksiders Genesis

The instructions are given to you initially in a text-based briefing, then you are left to carry out the mission. The interface isn’t fully explained so it took me a couple of frustrating missions to learn exactly what I was being asked, and trial and error to implement. It wasn’t until I had played for an hour or so that I spotted the Second Front manual as downloadable content in Steam, and this 106-page document is extremely well detailed and descriptive. It breaks down every aspect of the game, right down to individual unit tactics and scenario possibilities. This would have answered a lot of my questions and prevented some frustrations I experienced, but I do like learning the hard way. Definitely give this a read before you get started! After grasping the basics, taking my time to go through each bootcamp tutorial mission to success was extremely beneficial as there are a lot of tactics involved. Each turn is broken into four phases – move & fire, fire from the enemy, escape, advance and close combat phases. Move & fire is as it sounds, however if you fire first, you cannot then move afterwards. You can crawl, walk or run during your move, and each has its uses, with running being loud and easy to spot you. The land is hex grid based showing different elevations and types of cover, and you can see how far each squad can move by looking at the illuminated tiles. Using buildings to block line of sight is a valued tactic, but if you leave yourself in an open field, you will need to cause a distraction or leave yourself open to be fired upon in the enemy’s turn.

Leading a company-size assault has never been easier

If you have the ability to pop smoke, you can use that, or an alternative is to get other squads to draw their fire or use mortar to pin down the enemy. There are lots of options, it just depends on what you have at your disposal in the given scenario. Each time you hover over an enemy squad, you’ll see the percentage chance to hit depending on the units in your squad, the attack type you are using and the range to target. You can also check their line of sight to plan your next moves using the binoculars icon. Often, if I was caught out of position, the enemy fire would break my movement and put me in pinned or broken status. This meant I would need to have RNG in the escape phase that may gave me a chance to run away to relative safety. The advance phase gives you one extra move if you require it, and the enemy cannot attack during this move. This is especially useful to enter a location containing enemy units which will trigger close combat. Finally, the close combat phase will see you try to melee attack or capture enemies in the next tile that you have managed to corner/trap. If you advance and there are no close combat encounters, it will skip this phase and end your turn. After your turn, the enemy uses the same set of phases so if you had any squads left out in the open, they are going to be vulnerable to attack. Similarly, you may be able to get an extra shot at them as they move positions. Later infantry tutorials taught you how to use squad leaders Darksiders Genesis

which give you extra movement and chance to hit, mounted machine guns and how to mobilise them (they must be disassembled to move and reassembled before being able to fire again), as well as mortar rounds which are devastatingly effective providing RNG goes your way. Firing a mortar has a chance to set that tile ablaze, and if that happened to be a house, the smoke to fire effects were well detailed. This can also block the path you were trying to take though as the fire could spread to neighbouring tiles. Tile elevation comes into play when you need to raid buildings. Some buildings have multiple levels and there is a building icon in the top right of the UI to switch which level of buildings is viewable. You may see enemy units looking out the windows of the top floor and some missions will task you with forcing units to surrender without firing on them. In this instance you will want to surround their position and doing so means on their next escape turn will use RNG to determine if they surrender or hunker down. You’ll notice there is a lot left to RNG rather than perfect tactics which may be a frustration for some players. This tended to drag out the end of some of my missions as my squads were in perfect positions, but the enemy just wouldn’t surrender or get taken out as quick as I had planned. The stylised graphics of Second Front seemed too cartoony at first, however the more I played the more I came to like it and it felt like playing on a tabletop board game as you assess the battlefield.

Parking a tank next to infantry is also a way to produce some grim results

The detail of infantry is decent enough when zoomed in, and the tanks are designed authentically off the original wartime machines. Tanks themselves have armour values for the front, sides and back of the hull and turrets. Some tanks require a commander to have his head poking out, which he is vulnerable to be fired upon and killed, and they will move faster when on roads, though are more in the open and vulnerable. In the games menu is a gallery where you can compare vehicles and weapons against each other to compare statistics. The tutorial missions are highly valuable to complete, and I did fail the first attempts at putting all I had learned into practice in the attack and defend scenarios. Switching over to the missions and campaigns, I started with the American missions and failed while learning, but eventually started to be victorious. For the campaigns, you have to complete the first campaign a number of times before unlocking the next one. It would have been great to pick and choose, and there is some grinding here to unlock them, but I also understand the game’s desire to have you play sequentially and to master skills and tactics before progressing. What else is magical? The map and scenario editor, of course! The Second Front map creator is the friendliest I’ve seen in years, and I can paint up a cute battlefield really fast. There may be some game engine weirdness — trenches only exist as dugouts that vehicles can’t cross — but the rest can be understood by trial and undo. The same goes for the scenario editor, partially because victory conditions are always simple. Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition

The player operates in several rounds. The German player, above, first can move and fire, followed by a Russian Fire response. Then units escape if broken. The player may choose to Advance infantry units, lastly is a Melee and recovery round where broken units may try to recover cohesiveness. This then goes to the Russians and follows the same path.  For combat you select the attacking unit, any attackable units will be bordered red. By hovering you can see who is attacking, the penalties to this attack, and the chance to inflict damage. Above we have several German units who have advanced, are in cover, and far away, with only a 1% chance to “break” the Russians or a 2% chance to “pin” them. Tanks offer a bit more option, in the above case we have a long gun, using High Explosive, with only a 3% chance to hit due to movement, cover, and concealment. Above that is the turret machine gun or ball(?) machine gun. The lower number are the effects if hit! But in order to get those effects we must first make our 3% attack roll successfully. The games focus is upon small unit engagements in World War 2. Individual soldiers are represented as parts of a squad or as a leadership unit able to be attached. Armor, trucks, and recon vehicles play an important role as do squad served weapons such as machine guns, bazookas, and mortars.

Mechanically you select a unit with Left Click, then Right Click to bring up the relevant options. If the phase only relates to certain units then they are highlighted, so no cycling through invalid units to find that one that can fire. The PZIv first moves and stops, if they decide to move, and continue moving, then they will suffer an attack penalty but be able to move further next round. Or they can choose to stop. After advancing they fire on the KV-1. It is a miss. The infantry is fired on and is Broken. The German is attacking with a Panzer IV as well as a single infantry unit without any leadership. The Soviet side is defending with a KV-1 and a Green Squad of infantry. On the other hand, I have already seen people complain about the art style/visuals of Second Front, and that’s the kind of insolence that cannot be brooked. Second Front is beautifully stylized and simplified, looking good while also being an economical choice for a studio that went and made a PC version of a hex-and-chit wargame. I can only complain about vehicle wrecks being too small and looking kind of bad. Also, please introduce corpse persistence. I had two German squads and a squad of Americans mutually annihilate each other in a trench, and it made for a satisfyingly gruesome tableau. Capture the required locations before their score markers run out, hold a required location until the marker runs, or escape the map through designated points.
