While there are plenty of pirates to fight wherever you go, the bulk of the game is spent wandering the seas, moving from one biome to the next to find the darkness that the talking star referred to in the opening. The oceans slowly open up to you, revealing more opportunities to do battle or to fulfil requests from the odd people who live on the randomly generated islands you find. The map of the Deepblue opens slowly, with regions needing to be discovered before you can fast-travel to them. It is a bit disappointing that the world feels so barren and empty outside of the marked regions, leaving you with no choice but to fast travel between them. It would have been interesting to be able to simply sail from one end of the map to the next, but we got the sense that the game wouldn’t have been able to handle the load of a truly open world. Movement requires paying attention to the direction of the wind and letting it partially guide your path. Trying to sail against the winds is technically possible but frustratingly slow, which is a feature rather than a bug in the game. As per the title, sailing is what you’re enlisting for here and despite the stylised visuals, Sail Forth’s boating is more realistic than many other games that put you at the helm. Trying to sail with a shortest-path mentality to your next objective will not only slow you down but will also cause you to miss out on key moments in the game. When faced with a stiff headwind, the best option is to trim the sails and change course to see what next surprise the seas have waiting for you. Speaking of bugs, Sail Forth is certainly not free of hiccups. Most are relatively minor, such as the frame rate stuttering or your ship spawning high in the air when you move to a new section of the map only to crash down to the water a moment later. The worst bug popped up when our Joy-Cons suddenly stopped registering inputs for several seconds, usually at the most inconvenient moments. While this was rare, it was frustrating to be taken out of relaxing exploration so suddenly. While it isn’t the focus of the game, there are moments when combat is necessary in Sail Forth. The Skull Clan pirates and the inevitable sea monster are an obstacle that pops up now and then as you research the nature of the strange Deadrock that seems to be corrupting the seas.

There are multiple weapon load-outs to choose from, with some offering increased range or firepower. Most combat is a slow affair, requiring you to get your ship into the right position before you can unload on your foes. Each ship you add to your fleet has different maneuverability and weapon placements, giving you multiple options in how you take on these enemies. Some point forward while others are on the sides of your ship, allowing for a more conventional ship-to-ship combat experience. Beyond cosmetic choices like the colour and emblem that flies on your sails, this is the main way that you can customise your fleet. It isn’t incredibly deep but it adds a much-needed wrinkle to keep Sail Forth from feeling one-note. As you explore the oceans, you’ll come across a colourful cast of characters. Some will offer to join your crew, conferring bonuses to stats like ship repair time, attack speed, or sailing speed. Many will give you tasks like delivering snacks to a struggling chef or giving a box full of angry bees to a random stranger. Our favourite was the sea slug in a human suit that offered every stereotype of a used-car salesman as he tried to shift his wares upon us, but there are plenty of interesting characters that pop up as you set sail across the Deepblue. There is a playfulness to the art design, which obviously takes its cues from games like The Legend of Zelda’s cel-shaded line. While none of the characters particularly stand out with their designs, they help set the tone and act as an effective reminder that this game is meant to be approached with a light-hearted mindset. Much of their dialogue sounds like someone put vaguely nautical terms into a random generator and hit play, churning out sentences that don’t entirely make sense but still get their point across and add to the sense of whimsy that is this the highlight of Sail Forth. I have a soft spot for procedurally generated titles. The random nature of their gameplay and the endless surprises keep me playing. As such, when Sail Forth landed on my desk for the second time, I couldn’t resist. This is a game that I previewed 18 months ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Consequently, will its full release be worth my while, or will it be a bit of a damp squib? What’s more, it is full of magic, plenty of side quests, and it’s overflowing with charm. As such, this quaint and unusual title will make you smile as you battle pirates and the elements. Furthermore, its random nature ensures that no playthrough is the same. Subsequently, it’s a game that’ll keep you playing for hours. Unlike many of its peers, Sail Forth isn’t full of lore, nor is it story-rich. Instead, it has a loose plot that drives you forward. Accordingly, it’ll demand that you explore far-off lands while taking on unruly brutes. On top of this, you are rewarded for helping stranded creatures and finding fish. Moreover, there are some nice fantasy elements that add mystery to this cute title. By helping the locals, you’ll improve your fortune, expand your fleet, and become a force to be reckoned with. Alongside this, you are expected to take on delivery jobs and become a photographer.

Furthermore, there are races to compete in, shooting competitions to win, and other minor tasks. Each of these quests is optional, but by doing them, you get the most out of the game. Where Sail Forth excels is its zany characters and wicked combat. A quaint and charming game would be nothing without interesting locals and fun missions. Thankfully, this is overflowing with unusual creatures, rewarding tasks, and challenging moments. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing for rare fish, hunting clams for resources, or delivering questionable goods, it was great fun.Alongside this, you are free to purchase new vessels, upgrade your equipment, and hire a new crew. Each of these elements takes time and effort and they are progress-dependent. Consequently, getting the best gear and the biggest ship is no mean feat. However, the bigger the boat, the more chance you have in a fight. Therefore, this is essential if you wish to survive each encounter and destroy every fort. I adore a pastel-infused title that is relaxing and pleasant to the eye. Fortunately, Sail Forth is all these things and much more. Its soft colour scheme and open areas look amazing. Moreover, each small location is unique and full of surprises. On top of this, the inclusion of different weather fronts was an amazing decision. Consequently, it was easy to get lost in this simple but stunning creation. The developers have done an amazing job with their UI and their controls. Accordingly, Sail Forth is easy to play and quick to pick up. What was particularly great was the wind mechanics. You must set your sail, adjust its position, and move as fast as possible. Once this skill is mastered, you can focus on the excellent combat. During every battle, you must line up your sights with each of your foes. Failure to do this will waste your ammo and put you at risk. However, if you can successfully perfect the sailing element, you’ll win every fight with ease. The combat, exploration, and procedurally generated world create a moreish experience. Subsequently, once you fall for its charms, Sail Forth is tough to put down. However, there is the concern that it could become repetitive in the long run. Yet, if you tackle this casually, you’ll return over and over again. There are a plethora of naval-based games out there, as it’s a genre that seems to continuously inspire new additions. From pirate games to sailing games to trading games, if you’re interested in sailing the virtual high seas, there’s undoubtedly a game for it. In Sail Forth you play as Captain Toot, a sailor tasked by the Northstar with saving the Deepblue. Yeah, the whole game pretty much uses language like that. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a cute way to set the game apart, but can be a little difficult to decipher at times, especially when characters are throwing out phrases like “I snuggle in an eternally itchy blanket of regret” and “Knots before mast, by jeepers a ship!”

After you pick up your stranded first mate Goose, you play through a little bit of the combat tutorial and then the game opens up for you, though you are still guided through a loose tutorial of some of the other game mechanics for a little while longer. One of the biggest strengths of Sail Forth is the freedom that it offers. While yes, you do have to engage in some naval combat and fight the Skull Clan in several locations, your main focus doesn’t need to be on fighting if you don’t want it to be. The huge map offers plenty of room for exploration and discovery, there are mysteries to solve, merchantry to try your hand at, fish to catch, pictures to take, races to win, fleets to build, and giant sea monsters to deal with. The game’s world is fairly open and you have your pick of what you’d like to do and when, to a reasonable extent. Again, you do need to keep your boat in shipshape and be able to fight off any enemies, but beyond that, the Deepblue is yours to explore. My favorite thing to do, once my boat was a bit more sturdy, was set out on some explorations. Each part of the map that has islands and things to do is given its own area name, and to find an area you either need to find a map fragment, be told about it by an NPC, or just sail out and find it yourself. There are different biomes in the game to explore, but beyond that, it’s just incredibly relaxing to meander along on the high seas and see what you can find. Speaking of sailing, the sailing mechanics in the game are absolutely top-notch. While not an actual sailor myself, I do know a thing or two about it, and it can get frustrating when games portray sailing the same way that they do driving a car.

Sail Forth has little gauges on the screen and shows you wind direction, your sailing direction, and how to trim your sails and it explains all of it to you in ways that are simple and easy to understand for beginners. Your boat will not turn on a dime, which can be both a realistic blessing and a curse, but really that means that you need to plan out your actions and keep an eye on your location. If you get too caught up in where you’re going as opposed to where you are, you might run aground. The biggest drawback to the game is that, if you’re playing on PC, the keyboard and mouse setup is not ideal. While it’s certainly playable, Sail Forth feels much more natural and intuitive with either a controller or a Steam Deck, which it plays perfectly on. Sail Forth’s music and art, its general aesthetic, is a great deal of fun. With a cartoony art style that verges on minimalist, with bright colors and colorful dialogue, Sail Forth creates a fun and adventurous world to explore. The music as well as the sound effects are cheerful and upbeat, combining with the art to create a really positive atmosphere that encourages exploration. If you’re looking for a good, single-player sailing game, Sail Forth is an excellent choice. While it doesn’t deliver the height of realism and the dialogue can be slightly unintuitive, its cartoonish nature really is all part of the fun. With plenty of options for you to focus your efforts on, Sail Forth delivers a big blue ocean that’s open for you to explore.

They will also encounter a cast of eccentric characters, many of which offer quests or fleet services. The game’s writing aims for humor and incorporates plenty of Age of Sail tropes but never becomes annoying. I wish that some characters had more lines but it’s nice to discover more about the world via exploration than backstory. The core of Sail Forth is sea-based gameplay. Captain Toot is a master sailor, able to control a range of vessels using just a few commands. An easy-to-read wind indicator allows players to trim the sails to gain speed, while quick movement of the rudder decides the direction. The game does not aim for realism but for a sense of speed and exploration. The sea is not a full open world, but rather a series of interconnected locations with points of interest, including other ships, islands, characters, and abandoned vessels. Ships also mount weaponry, designed to be fired on the move. The mechanics are, again, simple: point the vessel toward the enemy, put the cross hairs in the right position, and fire at will. Most enemies are decent at maneuvering but it’s not hard to outsmart them and win a naval engagement. The difficulty increases when it comes to island-based forts. It is hard to maneuver and accurately fire at land-based defenses and the risk of beaching is high. Keep away from them until you get a big fleet that can overwhelm enemies with a ton of fire.Vampyr
