RUINER’s fast-paced combat, thrilling storyline, and replayability make it a game that’s hard to put down. With the RUINER as their guide, players must fight to save their brother and take down the corrupt system that controls the city of Rengkok. Originally released back in September of 2017, Reikon Games’ Ruiner is an ultra-stylish, ultra-violent isometric action affair than flings its players unceremoniously into the role of a nameless, faceless cyborg assassin on the trail of his missing brother in the future metropolis of Rengkok. This is Hotline Miami filtered through Ghost in the Shell and Akira; a slick, stylish techno nightmare in which your primary objective is to gratuitously kill everything that moves as you rampage forward through the game’s pulsating industrial jungles towards your final truth. When we first heard Ruiner was being ported over to Switch we were a little dubious as to whether Reikon could successfully manage it, this is an intensely good-looking game that moves at a relentless pace for its entire duration. However, amazingly, this Switch version performs pretty much immaculately in handheld – and almost as well docked – and still looks absolutely fantastic whilst doing so. Set in 2091, Ruiner’s violent tale sees you infiltrate the ranks of Heaven, a corrupt conglomerate that has a stranglehold on the city of Rengkok.

Dynamic Combat.

Initially, your cybernetically masked assassin’s objective is to simply hunt down and kill Heaven’s leader, The Boss, but almost immediately the signal between you and your mysterious employer is overridden by a hacker known as ‘Her’ who informs you the people you’re working for are holding your brother hostage. You team up with Her – who delights in calling you Puppy and pointing out how badly you just performed every time you die – to take the fight to Heaven in order to free your bro and reveal the true nature of the conglomerate’s shady operations. What follows is roughly six hours of non-stop, hyper-violent, twin-stick action that delights in denigrating your best efforts and, even on easier difficulties, provides a stiff challenge that requires you get to proper grips with its multitude of skills and systems in order to be successful. Ruiner starts out slowly – perhaps a little too slowly – with a prologue that sees you with very little in the way of combat options, simply hacking and slashing with your basic melee weapon and picking up guns to fire at advancing enemies. It’s a prologue that gives off a bit of a wrong impression in many ways, successfully setting the scene for the action that follows but also temporarily leading you to believe that your protagonist has a somewhat barebones skillset at his disposal. As it turns out, this is anything but the case as Ruiner’s delightfully anarchic brand of combat hinges entirely on the huge number of offensive options that it gives you to unlock and employ as you make your way through its hellish futurescape. There’s a constant stream of skills to get to grip with here, and you’ll need to mix them up continuously during battle in order to successfully traverse the bloody neon gauntlet the game lays before you.Fallen Bride Mege

As you blast your way through Rengkok South, Creep’s Nest, Hanza Compound, King’s Lair and so on, you’ll accumulate Karma which earns you skill points used to gain access to the multitude of combat options that make up your assassin’s expansive skill tree. You’ll gain access to a personal shield, deployable energy barriers, enemy mind control, a reflex booster that slows down time, dash move, grenades, a shock launcher and more. Each and every one of these skills can then be upgraded through several levels; your dash, for example, starts out as a single-use dodge but evolves into an almost infinitely chainable move capable of dealing out damage and granting you temporarily increased defences. Mixing up all of these moves is a breeze and jumping into your skill tree allows you to remove and reassign points as much you want at the push of a button, enabling you to constantly change up your fighting style as you engage with the various enemies that inhabit the murky depths of Rengkok’s cyborg-filled subterranea. Basic enemies can be dealt with in any number of ways – we personally liked to max out our dash and zoom around the screen whilst using mind control to have goons square off against each other – and the game also gifts you with a huge array of brutal weapons – katanas, clubs and fiery maces as well as miniguns, plasma rays, shotguns and sonic blasters – with which to dole out brutal punishment. Beat on any opponent badly enough and you can even put them into a dazed state, indicated by a yellow circle, enabling you to move in for a special Ruiner finish which sees you kick their heads clean off their bodies, execute them at close range with your weapon or simply stomp them into bloody giblets. All of the good stuff. RUINER is a brutal action shooter set in the year 2091 in the cyber metropolis Rengkok.

Storyline.

A wired psychopath lashes out against a corrupt system to uncover the truth and retrieve his kidnapped brother under the guidance of a secretive hacker friend. Combine preternatural reflexes, augmented tools, and the arsenal of fallen foes to tear down and dismantle the corporate titans of virtuality dealers at HEAVEN. RUINER features lightning fast combat that requires a delicate balance of overwhelming, brute force, and elegant strikes to overcome all manner of savage opponents. Blast through crowds or slow down time and hand select your points of attack before unleashing a storm of violence on the battlefield.  Equip all manner of high-tech firearms and melee weapons to ruin all that oppose you. Employ state of the art gadgets like energy shield, dash augmentations, and the switch gun stun or hack the opposition onto your side of the fight.  Violent confrontation is a means to an end and trust is a devalued currency in Rengkok as you navigate a senseless world with the help of a mysterious hacker friend. As players progress through the game, they must navigate the dangerous streets of Rengkok, which are filled with enemies and obstacles. The city is split up into various areas, each with its own unique challenges and enemies to face. Players must battle their way through warehouses, factories, and even a coliseum, all while facing off against heavily-armed enemies. In addition to its fast-paced combat, RUINER also includes a range of challenges and puzzles that must be completed in order to progress through the game’s story. These challenges include hacking into computer systems, activating switches, and finding hidden paths through the city. Players must use their wits and combat skills to overcome these challenges and advance to the next level.

The game’s narrative is revealed through a series of cutscenes and dialogue with various characters throughout the game. While the story is not the main focus of the game, it adds an extra layer of depth to the game’s world and characters. Overall, RUINER is a high-octane cyberpunk shooter that combines fast-paced combat, challenging boss battles, and a dynamic skill tree. With its stunning graphics, electrifying soundtrack, and immersive atmosphere, RUINER provides a thrilling and unforgettable gaming experience. A funny thing happened after I beat Ruiner: I started having fun. My first playthrough was exhaustingly difficult. I don’t mind a challenge, but I also don’t want to feel like I’m banging my head against a wall for 10 hours, unsure of what I’m doing wrong. However, retreading the 14 levels of cyberpunk brutality as the fully powered-up version of my twin-stick killer finally let me enjoy the frantic, stylish combat. Revenge stories tend to be pretty straightforward, and Ruiner’s is no exception. You’re a man with VCR text for a face, being told by a mysterious woman in your head that you have to kill a bunch of people who kidnapped your brother. It’s pulling from common cyberpunk material like Blade Runner, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Escape from New York to tell a bloody tale full of technological horror, and it mixes in some pretty cool, disturbing characters. Menacing techno with industrial beats suit the violent, dirty world of Ruiner well. (Look for the soundtrack to be featured on your favorite Tumblr synthwave blog.)

On the other hand, there isn’t much variety to the stages, which all look like the factory from the end of Terminator 2. (I love Terminator 2, but 10 hours of this same setting is a bit much.) You’re constantly overwhelmed, barely able to keep up with all the enemies and bullets swirling around you – which is exactly what you want in this style of game, except that Ruiner doesn’t do a great job of communicating which enemies are actively killing you. Too often, I didn’t know why I was dying, or even if I was taking damage. Many of the boss battles were memorable because they were more than just swarms of foot soldiers, but finally defeating one wouldn’t give me a feeling of, “That was awesome, I can’t wait to play more!” as much as, “I’m glad that’s over. Time for a break.” At least when you die you can restart right from that encounter instead of being sent back to an earlier part of the level. Ruiner revels in this difficulty, taunting you at the game over screen, guessing you probably don’t have anything better to do than die over and over in a video game. Quite often, upon your death, your puppeteer will say, “That was painful to watch.” Yeah, it was painful to play, too. Under “tough but fair” circumstances this kind of taunting would egg me on to do better next time, but when some deaths didn’t feel avoidable it seemed like Ruiner was gloating over having wasted my time. Another good idea that doesn’t quite pay off is that Ruiner throws a lot of different enemy types at you and expects you to regularly respec your skill tree to cope with them (which you can do for free at any time, Diablo 3-style).
