There are complex laws, which change on a regular basis, big collisions, and countless tactical opportunities. It’s a fluid, spontaneous game that looks different with each and every match. It’s no wonder, then, that so many videogame developers have stayed clear of the sport – until now. Eko Software’s Rugby 22, which hits shelves today, is a love letter to modern rugby on paper – there are options to shape the tactical outfit of your team, there’s a renewed focus on kicking in-field, and there’s a distinct attempt at promoting running rugby. Yet, when you actually sit down to play Rugby 22, all of these points, which form the core tenets of modern rugby, slip away. It quickly becomes clear that while this game was made by rugby fans for rugby fans, it’s not the one we’ve been clamouring for for years. While it’s worth saying that Rugby 22 is an improvement over Eko’s last game, Rugby 20, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Its control scheme, which you’re not fully introduced to – even in the game’s dedicated tutorial – is far too complicated, leaving you in the lurch in pivotal moments. I’ve put about 12 hours into the game so far across the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and despite playing through the tutorial three times, it took me about two attempts – and one online game with a friend – to work out how jackaling works. The tutorial is designed to walk you through the basics of rugby, in the same way your first training session would. You’ll learn how to make both short and long passes, how to throw players into a ruck, how to scrum, and how a line out works. What it doesn’t show you, especially in the later stages, is how to actually compete for the ball – something which is pretty important in the grand scheme of modern rugby.In ruck training, you’re taught how to add players (which is as simple as hitting B/Circle and thrusting your right analogue stick forward) but not how to jackal. In line out training, you’re taught how to throw the ball to each of the pods, but not really how to select which player to lift during an opposition throw in. While I’ve got a reasonably good understanding of rugby from my playing days, I worry about how Rugby 22 is going to be received by new players. There’s no real attempt to explain these situations, and given the breakdown is probably the most confusing part of a rugby game, not explaining what a jackal is, let alone when you should attempt one, is going to end up frustrating more players than not.

Then, when you’re done with the tutorial, you’re thrown into your first game against AI – without any formal introduction to the full control scheme. It doesn’t teach you how to kick in-play, it doesn’t teach you how to properly maul, and it doesn’t teach you how to fend off defenders in attack. I spent most of my first match randomly pressing buttons to see what they would do – something you shouldn’t have to do minutes after a tutorial. When you do finally get to grips with the control scheme, Rugby 22 offers several modes: Quick Match, Online Match, Career, and League. Quick Match is exactly what is says on the tin, allowing you to jump into a game against AI or a friend with no strings attached, Online allows you to play online against a friend or another person, League allows you to play a season as a team from one of five leagues (Top 14, Premier League, URC, Pro D2, and the Nation’s Trophy), while Career allows you to take your custom team, created using player cards you unlock as you play, against AI or a friend online. League play is probably one of the better modes in the game, allowing you to take your team through the ranks. All the teams from the Top 14, the Pro D2, and the URC are licensed, but if you’re looking to play as your favourite team from the Premier League – or perhaps a national team like England – you’re out of luck. Rugby 22 has more licences than its predecessor for sure (58 to be exact), and while it’s great to see teams like the All Blacks and the Wallabies join the ranks, it’s frustrating – especially as someone who follows top flight English rugby – not to be able tear it up on the pitch with an old favourite. While you can play as Leicester – as in Leicester Tigers – for example, you’ll have a boring old kit that doesn’t even reflect the team colours, and randomised players that you have no affiliation with. I didn’t think this would bother me at first, but as I set up more and more matches – particularly national line-ups you’d expect to see in the Six Nations and the World Cup, I realised I wasn’t particularly fond of being fouled by that well known English number eight, Emmanuel Watson. This frustration is even more prevalent when you consider the potential of Career mode. While licensed players do feature in the mode, which, by the way is heavily influenced by FIFA’s Ultimate Team, there’s a lot of unlicensed ones in there, forcing you to check the stats of essentially Football Manager-style regens before you can even assemble your starting 15.

Gameplay

When you find a licensed team that you actually quite like playing, though, the game does sink its claws in you. Yes, it’s a bit of a mess, and by no means a replacement for the rugby games Electronic Arts was known for creating, but if you’ve got an egg-shaped hole in your life, it’ll fill it. Games are five or ten minute affairs that pass the time, and while the AI differs massively depending on what difficulty you’re playing on, you’ll soon turn what appears to be mindless button mashing into something a little more refined. This is in part, due to the game’s new tactical options, which allow you to set your team’s offence and defence up to your liking. You can have your defensive line operate a blitz defence and make sure your back three operate a pendulum system. You can even decide how many pods you want off the nine, the shape they take, and how close together they are. In this sense, Rugby 22 offers much more control over the way you play the game than ever before. But pulling off those special moves – especially things like loops and switches – can be a real pain. Modern rugby union games have become a lot like the sport itself: reluctant to evolve. “Incremental” is too generous a description of the changes between iterations of Wicked Witch’s Rugby Challenge series, while EKO Software is taking baby steps towards competence with its Rugby games. Rugby 22 is EKO’s third attempt with the oval ball, and their first release I’ve actually had fun playing, but it is still some distance from securing a spot in the first XV of sports games. I’m reluctant to say they have nailed it, but Rugby 22 is the best “ball in hand” rugby union game since the EA Rugby games, the last of which came out when you only needed one hand to count how many years it had been since Australia won the Bledisloe Cup. Passing is a touch sluggish but it is easy to get the ball where you want it, with an expanding metre for cutout passes that make it easy to pick your man in the backline. When passes go to ground it feels like there is a good reason for it, and outside-in and run-around plays are activated with simple double taps of the pass buttons. Full set plays are also included, but just like in every other rugby game they aren’t of much use. You’ll be lucky if you get one pass away before being tackled as your players slowly run their lines. Using footwork is a delight in Rugby 22 with sidesteps, spins, stutters, dummies and fends all activated by right stick flicks that work intuitively, in that they feel very similar to the same moves in FIFA or Madden, and are a huge improvement on years gone by (though why they can’t just explicitly list the exact controls for all of the moves I have no idea). Steps are unfairly effective, even from lumbering forwards, while palms feel particularly brutal as you throw a defender to the ground. Buying time to get a pass away with a fend is a great feeling, as is beating a fullback one-on-one with a step or a dummy. On higher difficulties these moves will be crucial to finding open space, and the AI is ruthlessly adept at exploiting these tools itself.

Even the kicking game is strong. While EKO eschews slow-motion kick placement it is usually fairly easy to get a kick away when you have the space, and I engaged in kicking duels for territory in a way I never have in prior rugby union games. Timing metres judge catching high kicks and work fairly enough. My only gripes are with the ball physics, where bounces stop dead too often, and because “grubber kick” and “add to ruck” share a button, you’ll accidentally kick the ball away more often than I would like. On the other side of the ball, Rugby 22 struggles like the Namibian national team. Your AI defensive line is often a shambles after a couple of phases, leaving huge chunks of the field unguarded. AI defenders appear incapable of pushing the tackle button, forcing manual intervention in just about every case. Player changing can be off, and chasing down breaks is far too difficult. This isn’t helped by defenders shimmying sideways like they are defending in a line instead of turning and chasing when you want to cut down a break you see coming. You’ll eventually be able to anticipate danger and shut it down, but the AI scored far too many tries that I felt could have been stopped with better controls. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Rugby 22 plays a fairly competent game of rugby union overall, but it is very much two separate experiences. On “Legend” difficulty, it is a tense, gripping contest held back by a few unfortunate design issues. On any of the three difficulties below that it is a glorified training mode where stealing possession at ruck, scrum or lineout is trivial. If you get your kicks by putting on triple digit scores against minnows, stick to those lower difficulties. If you want to enjoy tight contests punctuated by occasional frustration and rage, “Legend” is for you. The ruck plays like a contest only at this highest difficulty, where the balance of “hard to turn over, retain the ball when you should” seems to have been struck. There were a few situations where AI turnovers and retention baffled me, but generally whoever got to the ruck in numbers first, won the ball. Ruck supremacy is assisted by timing stick flicks when players join the contest and is helped by making dominant tackles using the “hit-stick” style right stick controls, and deciding which rucks to concede to be able to set a defensive line became an important strategy to retain defensive shape. On the lower difficulties, I’m not sure the AI ever put together more than three phases before I could turn it over. Rugby union is an easy game when you can take the ball at will.

Scrums become a major problem on Legend. Where the AI would only win scrums when I let them on easier difficulties, winning a scrum on Legend, even with the feed, was a feat worthy of a lap of honour around the house. It got to the point that I disabled knock-ons just so I wouldn’t automatically lose possession every time a scrum packed. Maybe others are more adept at the “match the stick movement” game that determines scrum power, but it never felt fair to me. To top it off the light blue circle you need to track blended with the grassy field, making the dour minigame even harder to complete.
