Ranch management is the first part of the game you’ll experience and it quickly proves to be the easiest. You’re given a stable, living quarters, and some roads for free, but you’ll soon be asked to get your hands on some horses. While the initial selection is small, each horse has its own set of stats that influence how it’s best fit to race. The game doesn’t have much of a tutorial, so you’ll have to learn about the stats as you go, but it’s a rather simple process. From there, you’ll be encouraged to build training structures and other ranch buildings. As horses win races, your ranch’s popularity increases and people will visit, spending money in the process. Ranch costs aren’t too high, and it’s easy to turn a monthly profit, especially after winning a couple races. Training and horse/jockey management is where things get tricky. There are two ways horses can train. Every month, horses will go through their automated training. Each horse’s training preferences can be customized, along with assigning a jockey to work with them. Horses will level up certain stats during those sessions, and their fatigue level won’t take much of a hit. You can also spend a bit of money and give horses a direct stat boost through special training. These sessions raise stats quicker, but add to the animal’s fatigue. Managing fatigue can be frustrating, especially since racing will cause a drastic increase, but certain items and training sessions can help slowly lower it. The ultimate goal in Pocket Stables is to enter and win races. Races are one of the most hands-off areas of the game, but manage to be one of the most fun. Horses are assigned a class based on the races they’ve won and they can only enter races for their class.

Is Kairosoft just running laps?

You sign up for races a month in advance, select an eligible horse, and choose a jockey (either your own or an outsider). Once the day of the race arrives, you’re sent to the track. At the track, there’s only one more level of customization: how to run the race. There are a few strategies, such as taking an early lead or making a late push, and the best method depends on the horse and jockey. With how interactive the game is, it’s disappointing that races are mostly hands-off. However, the feeling of excitement as your horse finally wins a race more than makes up for it. As you win races, the ranch’s popularity will skyrocket, new challenges will open up, and more features will become available. Much of the game is what we’ve come to expect from Kairosoft. Pocket Stables starts off slow, but eventually grows into a detailed and engrossing experience that rivals some of the best Kairosoft has offered. The graphics and music are all typical of the company, as is the menu system. Players who have grown tired of the Kairosoft formula may not get much enjoyment out of Pocket Stables. Seemingly once every month or two, Kairosoft releases a new game. It’s not always clear if these games are new, ported from their back catalog of dumbphone games, or just newly translated, but seemingly every single one of them shoots straight to the top of the charts. For all their various themes, they’re mostly very similar, or at least fall into one of a few archetypes. Their latest, Pocket Stables, delves into the world of horse-racing, and while it does indeed play much like their RPG town sim, Dungeon Village, it still has that Kairosoft charm. Like all of Kairosoft’s games, Pocket Stables is lighthearted and easy, with no real fear of failure. If you run out of money, you’ll simply be given more, but odds are that won’t even happen. The goal here is not to create a deep, realistic simulation of what it’s like to raise a thoroughbred, but just to craft an addictive time-waster. You begin by building a horse ranch. This ranch serves as both an attraction and a practical training facility for your thoroughbreds. You’ll need to build facilities to build up your horse’s stats, but you’ll also want to build gift shops and other amusements for the fans that want to come see your champion racehorses.

This component is pretty simple

Even by Kairosoft standards, with only two real training facilities, and third to let them rest, so don’t expect a lot of complex strategy to the building phase. Of course, the real meat of the game is building up your horses and the jockeys that ride them. Horses can be leveled up with a training regimen, but they only have a certain maximum potential they can reach. They also age and diminish over time, so it’s important to not only get the most out of their abilities while you can, but also to make sure to train a successor to take over by the time they can no longer advance. The races themselves are non-interactive affairs, but you still get to watch them unfold in real-time, and cheer your steed on. Your horse has four basic stats: speed, stamina, dexterity, and intensity. These determine how your horse handles different parts of the race. High intensity will help him in that final push for the finish line, for example, stamina will determine his ability to maintain in long races, and dexterity allows him to take turns better. Completing races is your primary source of income, and working your way up the ranks toward bigger prizes is vital to getting the resources to raise more and better horses. All of this is wrapped up in Kairosoft’s usual charming presentation. You’ll find the same colorful, isometric, low-res pixel art here that you see in all their games, and its appeal hasn’t worn out yet. The music quality has been taken up a notch from their earlier efforts, and the relaxing soundtrack is a good compliment to the laid-back gameplay. A lot of the appeal of Kairosoft’s games doesn’t come down to depth and challenge, but just a spirit of fun that pervades the title. Pocket Stables doesn’t break any new ground for Kairosoft, nor does it reach any new heights. Dungeon Village and the free-to-play Dream House Days might be better starting points for newcomers. But for those with an insatiable appetite for more of those blocky sprites and silly names, Pocket Stables is not a misstep either. It has the same fun, simple gameplay and retro-gaming charm that have earned them so many hits before, and as long as that appeal hasn’t worn off on you yet, Pocket Stables will earn its keep. The bottom line is your cash reserve. You need money to pay your monthly expenses and wages, to hire new jockeys, buy new horses, train your existing staff and herd, expand your facilities, and buy useful items. You’ll also earn research points that can be used to unlock new buildings and skills for your horses.

Like every Kairosoft game, you’re at very little actual risk of running out of money, since the game will always find an excuse to give you a bit more cash if you dip too low, so staying solvent isn’t that difficult at all. Similarly familiar is that you really can’t lose. As long as you keep playing, your horses and jockeys will get better and better, and you will inevitably win races, attract more fans, and score more points. Of course, the real game here isn’t about making your way to the top, because that is a matter of course. No, the challenge here, as ever, is one of time. You need to accumulate as many points as you can by the time you reach the end of your 16th year. Every Kairosoft game uses this mechanic, with each game varying as to how difficult it is to reach the top prize or goal in time. Pocket Stables is actually pretty tricky in this regard. The chances of winning the top race by the time you hit that last year are pretty slim. Of course, you can just continue playing for fun after the time limit is up, but for those who like that meta-challenge, you’ll have a slightly more taxing time here than with most of their other games. Most of your time spent with the game will be at the grounds of your ranch. The training facilities each improve a different set of stats when a horse uses it enough. The lodgings are needed to keep full-time jockeys around, who are required for training your horses. Entertainment facilities help generate money and research points, and after a certain type of visitor makes enough use of them, you’ll earn a new item, skill, or facility. Plants and trees are useful not only for aesthetic purposes, but also give a bonus to surrounding buildings. As you play, you’ll unlock more buildings and facilities, along with the opportunity to expand the size of your ranch. You can level up just about everything in this game, including your facilities, horses, and jockeys. Horses can even be taught new abilities if they’re clever enough. Those abilities, in turn, can also be leveled up. As time marches on, though, your horses will age, and as they get older, they get injured more easily and take longer to recover. Luckily, this game features breeding, which allows you to retire a horse and, through the magic of nature, get a foal several months later with the characteristics of its parents. There are many different breeds of horses in the game, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and careful combinations of them can produce game-breaking results.

Naturally, you’re training your horses for a reason, and that’s where the races come in. You can enter a horse and jockey into a race every month, with selections based on the horse’s class and which races you’ve previously cleared. You’ll always walk away with some money, though not very much if you don’t place in first. You’ll also gain fans by running races, who will then come and visit your ranch to spend money and give you items. From time to time, you’ll also be challenged to one-on-one races by certain spectators. If you lose, there’s no shame in it. Rest your horse up, do some extra training, and try again. Sooner or later, you’ll win, because that’s the Kairosoft way. Visuals and sounds are no surprise if you’ve ever played any of the games this developer has released. Everything is cute and pixelated, and anything that could be reused from previous games has been. The music is pretty relaxing, at least, giving the whole thing a nice mellow tone that fits the theme of the game well. At this point, the art style seems to be Kairosoft’s calling card, so I don’t expect much change. Fortunately, both portrait and landscape modes are supported with no IAP required as in their free titles, and the larger size of the iPhone 5’s screen is completely filled.
