Finally, I gave it a nasty lasting power by making it resistant to antibiotics. Trump was ready to start making people really sick. It was Mexico that was infected first, and my immediate thought was that the Mexicans should have built a wall. Trump was, by now, growing in potency rapidly, to the point where the mutations were starting to make it dangerous to life. No one had died, yet, but millions were now carriers. Upon locking in that pre-game selection an interactive world map will appear, broken down into various nations. Players can choose any of the available countries, effectively kicking the game into action as patient zero suddenly emerges. From here the clock starts ticking. Depending on how you invest your growing stockpile of DNA points will determine how fast the infection spreads. Options from the hex-based development grid will also notch up the severity and lethality of the pathogen. For example, if your plague becomes too lethal, it will kill off the population before it can spread to a wider number, quickly triggering a loss state. Similarly, ramping up its severity will put countries on high alert, pre-empting them to start finding a cure. Despite having no direct control over the pathogen, players must leverage the tools and information at their disposal. This information refers to the many different traits a plague can adopt, as well as the target countries themselves. Greenland can be particularly hard to reach due to its limited sea and air traffic, not to mention its icy barren climate. Even if players manage to fully optimise their pathogen to suit a specific country, there’s an element of luck at play too. When you start a game of Plague Inc. Evolved you first have to choose a disease type, these range from bacteria, viruses, all the way up to nano-viruses and bio-weapons. Each one has slightly different rules and abilities. Each type of disease is given a unique special ability, and some (four out of the eleven, which I’ll call the special types) act radically different.

The game allows players to customize the difficulty of the game, making it easier or harder depending on their preferences.

You then name your virus. I found a few clever choices, my personal favorite was “Twilight Fan Fictions.” but anything can be used, it’s just a name for the game to use to refer to it. From there the game actually starts bringing you to the main map. Unsurprisingly, the main map is the standard shape of the world. You have six out of the seven continents (no Antarctica) and various countries. Some countries are obvious, such as North America which is Canada, United States, and Mexico. However, other countries are jumbled together or forgotten about altogether. Central Europe is a single place, Portugal is part of Spain and Africa which is 54 countries in the real world is about 10 in the game. These are clearly decisions to add to the gameplay (imagine Risk with all 195 countries), but it’s a shame that so many countries are forgotten here. However, each country’s borders are so sharp that there’s a clear border where the countries are. It’s odd to see the United States completely overrun by a disease next to Canada that has a few spots on it. The reason is the countries are represented on the map but the location of “sick people” is not on a grid so spreading of the disease is more based on hidden mathematics rather than a logical progression.  The sharpness of the borders feels rather awkward at times, especially when a country’s borders are open and no infected people seem to be going into completely healthy countries. A successful game lasts roughly ten to fifteen minutes, until one of two things happen. Either the entire world map is covered in red dots, or a cure sneaks up on you, almost like the antithesis of a zombie biting your neck. It’s sudden, unexpected, and frequently unfair. Plague Inc is simple enough to grasp, but it’s even simpler to fail. Because the games end so quickly, progress is instantaneous, and it’s refreshing. Because one must think quickly, results are mapped just moments later, and the sense of pride is almost constant – one second a move is made, and the next one plays out the results. While the momentary elation can be swayed into dark waters with a spike in the cure, something undermines the experience even more. The sense of progress in here is more fleeting then the moment of success for two reasons. One, more minor then the other is the constant sense of needing to maintain your commanding lead over the cure. The other is the lack of a real sense of progression. While more types of genetic mutations and even different kinds of diseases will get unlocked, at the end of each round the stats are reset. It’s hard to imagine the sense of progression not being higher, if the player could take over individual regions per game, instead of getting the whole world then having their victory reset.

Graphically, this is a series of stereotypical sci-fi monitors, along with a textbook map of the globe. It’s honestly perfect for the mission that is bestowed, as everything is available with a single mouse click. Being able to flip between the screens quickly is highly efficient. Despite blocking the view of the screen, however, some of the pop ups in the main game don’t pause the action, and the same seems to be true for the additional menus. This means balancing pushing forward, and actively watching for DNA points to appear, which can get chaotic rather quickly. The quality of Plague Inc.’s simulation is surprisingly high. It feels great to dump research points into Avian Transmission just in time to transfer your plague to spread to several new countries thanks to a great bird migration. Plague Inc. seems simplistic at first, but actually eradicating humanity is a satisfying balancing act between spreading your pandemic as quickly as possible without putting the human race on high alert. One mistake I made early on was to make my virus too lethal by mutating in the Organ Failure trait – it was killing people before they had an opportunity to spread the disease. Alchemic Dungeons DX

Although balancing your plague’s hardiness, severity and infectivity is a fun and addictive line to walk, Plague Inc. does suffer from a few drawbacks. The big issue is that there is simply too much downtime. Too much time is spent passively waiting around for DNA points to accrue or for your disease to fully infect a territory, even with a fast forward button. The game also doesn’t surface enough data to the player. Why can’t I see country-by-country virus breakdowns? It was about when the first people in Europe were infected, having had the disease move to them via boat and plane, that the first death occurred, and that’s when the world’s scientists sprang into action, with government-funded medical programs designed to find a solution. At first, the funding was minimal, but as Trump began infecting more areas; South Africa, India, Russia, the global effort to defeat Trump intensified, and more and more money was thrown into medical research.

It became a race; would the scientists be able to find a cure for Trump before the world’s populations collapsed? As more and more people died, order in their respective countries began slipping. After enough died, the government would be overthrown and the nation would no longer supply money to the research efforts. Sweden was the first to fall, after a dwindling population panicked and extremists caused a meltdown at a nuclear power plant. India, its massive population that exists in such poor health conditions, was second. America, the initial source of Trump, held on to public order for a valiant period, but as it fell, the sense that the disease would win became palpable, and the residual efforts of the likes of England, Japan and Brazil would not be enough. Morocco, the last nation to be infected, was also the third last to be wiped out. Australia, insulated somewhat by its distance and geographic isolation, was second. Somehow Brazil was the last nation on the planet to have living people. But it fell. Trump won. Humanity was gone.
