Landing on an enemy island without any support ships will prevent the invasion forces from building a solid beachhead, and breaking the supply lines of your opponent, isolating his units and making encirclement maneuvers are the strategies required to achieve an ultimate victory. Order of Battle: World War II is a game that’s been around for a while in one form or another, but it only recently cemented itself as a solid hub for a variety of WWII-related campaigns. What started out as a Pacific Theater-oriented outing is now essentially a menu to which you can add as many or as few additional DLC campaigns as you like. Its key strength, then, is customizability. Oh, and the turn-based warfare is pretty darn good, too. With the free version of Order of Battle, players have access to a Boot Camp campaign and a sample of every other available campaign pack. This should be enough to let you know whether or not you’re interested in trying out something else from the ever-growing list of full campaigns. At the moment these consist of U.S. Pacific, Rising Sun, U.S. Marines, Morning Sun, Winter War, Blitzkrieg, and Kriegsmarine. New missions are added to the free sample list each time a campaign is released, so you won’t have to worry about missing any future fronts.

The name of the game in Order of Battle is the same as it was two years ago, and that’s a very good thing. Even as developer The Aristocrats has expanded its scope bit by bit, balance is still the series’ strong suit. Some strategy games favor raw power over strategy, but you can’t just overload your patrol with the most powerful tanks and expect to emerge victorious. Planning is key, and despite the game’s relative simplicity it’s very easy to get overzealous and find yourself cut off from the rest of your army. It pays to play patiently and work outposts into the mix as you traverse the map. Doing so will increase your range of supply and make survival that much likelier. Not every campaign in Order of Battle is created equal, but you’ll find some interesting content within the overall downloadable add-on setup that you likely haven’t encountered before. If you’ve ever played a campaign that depicted Japan’s invasion of China, for instance, it must have been in a fairly niche title. That’s what Morning Sun does here, and though it isn’t the most exciting selection available, it’s intriguing for its place in history alone. Fall Guys Ultimate Knockout 

That historical aspect has become much more rigid as the game has grown, however. Earlier campaigns allowed players to turn the tide of war in an ahistorical direction, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. This news will likely please the real history buffs out there, but it can be a little deflating to perform exceedingly well only to face defeat because that’s what happened in the actual battle. Order of Battle makes up for minor shortcomings like these with style and speed. The animated 3D units look great atop the grid-based 2D map, and there’s just enough detail present to suck you into the battles. Speaking of which, the battles are at their most exciting when they incorporate a mix of land, sea, and air combat. The challenge is just right during these missions, and they’re short enough to not be terribly annoying to replay repeatedly. You will ultimately get however much enjoyment you feel like investing here. With an assortment of optional campaigns to choose from without the pressure of playing any theater you’re not particularly interested in, Order of Battle serves up a nice à la carte counterpoint to some of the more demanding and hyper-realistic strategy games out there without sacrificing any of the smarts.

Here’s what you do: download the game for free and see if you enjoy the gameplay. You can try one (1) scenario from each of the DLC packs, so that’s over a dozen battles for free. It’s basically Panzer Corps, but with supply lines and improved bombing run and naval combat mechanics. Then, if you like what you see, buy one (1) DLC pack to unlock the scenario and campaign editor. Go to the Slitherine forums, and find the fan-made campaigns that were made using the same tools the devs of the game themselves used. They are extensively playtested and iterated, and while the quality of the fan campaigns may vary, I have already installed 28 full community developed campaigns for Order of Battle. Even if they’re a little bit clunky at times, that’s a huge pile of free content, dozens if not hundreds of hours of gameplay.I was introduced to the Wargame genre as a child, sitting on my father’s lap while he was playing Panzer General II and its variations. Taking advantage of the forced idleness due to the quarantine, I have played a total of four modern wargames. I want to share with you my impressions of each game, and see if the developers really managed to create something new and exciting? Let’s go over them in the order of release. Order of Battle: World War II is a very enjoyable turn based WWII strategy game. There is a wide variety of units (land, sea and air) and scenario’s for you to battle across. Fighting as the US Marines and launching an assault on Japanese controlled islands is something new and fresh that you don’t get the opportunity to do in many games. There is a lot of content in the form of dlc campaigns so you can pick and choose which interests you the most and what you’d like to buy. The details in the graphics are good and the sounds get the job done. Battles can become pretty intense when you think you have the numbers to win but you didn’t consider the enemy has aircraft, or they snuck a couple units through the jungle behind you or you happened upon a more fortified position than you expected.

The game has a nice, fairly easy learning curve and a decent tutorial which should teach you all you need to know to jump in and fight, The biggest issue people have in their reviews is the game is listed as free to play which allows you to try out the first battle from each campaign. As time goes on the developer releases new campaigns and sells them as dlc. People are putting negative reviews expecting the devs to work for free and give away all this content. That’s not how any successful developer or business would operate. Having the game set to f2p isn’t meant to mislead people, it’s meant to offer a few levels for people to try, like a demo and then if people like those levels they can then buy which ever campaigns they want. Obviously they have to charge for all the extra work they’ve been putting in to make new content for the game. Ignore these reviews unless they actually offer up some critisim of the game. If you have any interest in a turn based WWII game then this is worth checking out. It is one of, if not the best WWII turn based strategy games on steam. You can try a few battles for free and see if it’s something you would enjoy, and if you do enjoy it then keep an eye out because the developer’s are actively creating new campaigns. I started with turn-based tactical wargames in 1987/88 (SSI titles, “Typhoon of Steel”. etc.). In the 90s “Panzer General” for sure was some milestone. Enjoyed all the sequels and at last also “Panzer Corps” as a good remake. See “Order of Battle: World War II” in that context. I do appreciate the technical appearance of the game. The interface is suitable. I like the graphics and animations (would’ve been glad about something like that in this genre in the past…). But most of all I’m outright enthusiastic about game depth and immersiveness of this series! Played in difficulty level III…and, of course, approached that game with habits developed in long years of “Panzer General” playing. Although that didn’t prove fatal immediately (in “Boot Camp”)… there was nevertheless some strong impression that those ways wouldn’t work out on the long run anymore.

The main reason may be the supply system, one distinctive feature of the game. It adds a lot of complexity and depth in comparison with “Panzer General”. Today I still find difficulty level III challenging, and read that many players feel so, but one will manage to come out on top if an adequate management of supplies, replacements and unit rotation can be achieved. The supply system has consequences for all aspects of the game. – An example may be the role of commandos in this game. Deployable by airdrop, free from the usual supply restrictions, but able to cut enemy lines of communications, conceal themselves and ambush enemy units. In “Panzer General” and “Panzer Corps” I just remember them as air mobile infantry with close quarters and soft target values above average. In “Order of Battle” they do seem even vulnerable fixed in regular infantry actions. “Order of Battle” paints a far more realistic picture here. I also get the impression that there’s something with the AI…that it may be fundamentally more complex than in “Panzer Corps”. I feel that I always need to focus and re-evaluate situations to beat the AI.
