One-Punch Man looks good when you’re in the action. The combat is flashy and well-animated but when it comes to cutscenes characters move with stilted, uncomfortable animation or bounce awkwardly with overt idle animations while waiting for the right moment to activate their angry pose. In screenshots, however, A Hero Nobody Knows looks remarkably close to the show and even emulates Saitama’s penchant for changing his face completely depending on how he’s feeling. The other mechanic is the Arrival system and is one of the highlights of the game. This can be invaluable if your teammate is Saitama, as he will end the fight in a single punch. One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows while having a couple of unique mechanics and characteristics is by no means unique compared to other games like Tekken or Mortal Kombat. The main story is based on hitting certain levels to progress and repeatedly failing to win a fight can drag the experience out. There is a noticeable increase in difficulty tiers and many of the enemies are re-skins of the same set of models, making things seem a touch repetitive as a result.

Your skill in fighting games will truly determine how long the campaign lasts as you will be able to take on higher level missions which will net more EXP rather than taking multiple easier missions which adds on to the overall time investment. One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows will resonate the most for fans of the anime and manga, while still providing a fun experience for those less familiar with the source material. In terms of how the game actually plays, it’s split into two parts: the adventuring and the fighting. The fighting, as I said, is an arena brawler, which means it has fairly simple controls, you’re waiting for special attacks to charge up, and (in this case) the feeling that everything is slightly off. The building blocks of a good fighter are all there, but it never runs as smoothly as it should. Taking the brunt of a full combo knocks you down, which is fine, but you then spend a good two-seconds or so on the floor trying to recover and there’s nothing you can do to speed that up. It’s really annoying, and it turns each battle into one where you just end up standing around every so often. The ideas to spice up the battle are really cool, but most of the time, you can just hammer light attack and be done with the fight before anything interesting happens. There’s still fun to be had, and it could well be that the less intense fighting system appeals to you, but I would have killed for this to have had a deeper combat system.
