The general story of Lumberjack’s Dynasty will likely be familiar to many players, following in the same vein as titles like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon: the protagonist has been given a farm – which in this case also features a lumber mill – and is tasked with getting it up and running again after years of disrepair. The only real change to the trope is that this time the protagonist’s aunt and uncle, from who he has acquired the farm, are actually still alive and present in the game for you to meet. I want to say now, before we get into the rougher details, that I adored my time with this game. Imperfect as it may be, Lumberjack’s Dynasty is a delightful way of becoming immersed in a new, picturesque world and, combined with the soothing music and lack of any sort of threat, the game is a calming escape from the more challenging aspects of our current real world. There’s more content here than you might expect at first glance too. Beyond the standard rebuilding of ruined farmhouses and chopping down trees, Lumberjack’s Dynasty allows you to collect recipe books to make more elaborate meals, fish in the local rivers, get married and start a family, and so much more that, while superfluous to the main objective of the game, really instills in you that the protagonist’s story is a life being lived, in all its many facets. As an experience, this game really nails the level of immersion it’s going for. Unfortunately, the things that Lumberjack’s Dynasty does so right aren’t going to be any player’s main takeaway. While its content is, largely, great fun to explore, the game also has a fatal flaw: its mechanics. By far the biggest problem here is that the game’s performance is extremely hit or miss. At times, it runs perfectly smoothly, while at others it suffers extensive frame drops and input lag, even when the settings are optimised for performance rather than visuals. In the worst instances, the performance was poor enough that I found myself having to restart the game before it could even be considered playable, let alone good.

Find a wife and raise a family

Lumberjack’s Dynasty also seems to have a number of issues specifically relating to object collision, most commonly in the form of felled trees remaining upright until given a hearty shove. While relatively benign, the problem can also lead to vehicles or the player character becoming stuck on scenery or, occasionally, nothing at all. In one instance during my playthrough, the lack of collision with a window ended up in me clipping through a wall through which I could not get back from without teleporting back to my vehicle. Combined with a somewhat floaty control system – particularly when trying to walk on or climb any sort of slope – it’s a problem that a lot of players are going to repeatedly stumble on. Outside of the mechanical aspects, there are some content concerns too. The first of these is the incredibly stilted and awkward dialogue, complete with extremely flat voice acting, that makes any conversation you have feel very unnatural. Secondly, and perhaps more detrimental to the overall experience, is the general lack of direction the game gives you after the first hour or so of play. There are some tutorial sections at the start that teach you how to do certain things, but once that’s done, players are largely left to their own devices and it can quickly become difficult to know what it is you’re actually supposed to be doing. Having a general goal of ‘use the lumbermill to make money’ is all well and good, but without any real direction on how to do that when you only own a very small section of forest and likely don’t have the money to buy more means that the game comes to a complete standstill while you have to try figuring it out.Lumberjack’s Dynasty is a game that I wish I could recommend, but in its current form, I’m just not sure that I can. In order to finally get something green, we sell felled wood to the local mill. To do this, we tip the raw trunks into the river at specified points so that they bob up and down to the mill. Or we drive them to the wood dealer ourselves. In the course of the game we buy Uncle’s sawmill, because processed wood (planks, logs, boards, bark and so on) brings more coal. In turn, we invest in a furniture factory or better machines, up to the modern wood harvester from Ponsse, which you may know from the farming simulator. With the difference that the machines and vehicles are simulated much more authentically there. In Lumberjack’s Dynasty, for example, we got stuck in two centimeters of mud with a tractor because the front wheels suddenly disappeared completely. Only by saving and loading did we get the tractor going again. Another time the same tractor got caught in a fence with the trailer hitch (okay, driving error on our part) but just couldn’t get free. You can also fish, grow vegetables and fruit, or keep cows, sheep, etc. in the farm’s own barn. You can also use recipes to cook yourself – because if you whack heavy tree trunks, you won’t get very far with an apple. Even wooing women, getting married and making children is possible.

If you have enough patience and even complete the diligent repair tasks stoically, you will get a quite extensive game with a lot of freedom of choice. If the developers would primarily streamline those dopey repair jobs, Lumberjack’s Dynasty would be a whole lot better in one fell swoop. A unique life simulation where you are a lumberjack building up a business and founding a lasting dynasty for generations to come. Lumberjack’s Dynasty is a mix of forestry, logging, business- and life-simulation with role playing elements. You start at a run-down logging camp which you slowly take over from your aunt and uncle as you restore it to its former glory. Along with cutting timber and hauling it to the mill for further production, you will enjoy various quests that will help you improve not only your business, but your character’s skills. Choose your playstyle: quickly become a straightforward and professional lumberjack by purchasing, cutting and converting large forests into products, or explore the full depth of the game and experience the vast range of activities from repairing and renovating your buildings and vehicles, fishing, harvesting honey, and growing vegetables. The weirdest thing about Lumberjack’s Dynasty – in a very long list of strange things – are the overheard snippets of conversation as you approach the game’s various NPCs. As you round the crest of a hill you might eavesdrop on a neighbour muttering something about how “everyone is talking about it”. Stroll up the drive of your aunt’s house and she’ll be whispering “yes, it will all be out in the open soon” to your uncle, before they both stop mid-conversation and slowly rotate on the spot like a pair of rotisserie chickens to face you. Innocuous at first, these throwaway lines of dialogue infuse an otherwise tranquil simulation game about cutting down trees with a kind of chaotic, paranoid energy. The sort that hits you twenty minutes later as you’re chainsawing through a birch and think, what horrible secret are these people hiding? Your auntie looks like the sort who might have mailed talcum powder to her state senator in the 1960s in response to a parking ticket. Your uncle looks like he’s stepped out of a montage of potential suspects in a Netflix documentary about a pair of teenage girls who went missing in the woods – you know, the guy calmly hosing down the back of his pick-up truck at two in the morning. You have the option to refuse to accept ownership of this highly suspicious couple’s highly suspicious logging operation, but all that does is set you loose in a chunk of countryside frozen in time, an indelible objective marker hanging over your aunt and uncle’s house like the sword of Damocles. Try as you might to avoid your fate, it’s inevitable that you take up the mantle of lumberjack and, by extension, become complicit in whatever unspeakable crime the locals are covering up. Potential hitchhiker bodies at the bottom of the lake notwithstanding, the intentions of the NPCs are more straightforwardly exploitative on a day to day basis. You are young blood, fresh from the big city and in search of meaning and purpose up here in the mountains. You are also the only person within a ten miles radius who owns a nail gun, which you will use to repair the dozens of dilapidated homes, barns and prospective murder shacks of your chore-averse neighbours.
