Things perpetually feel underexplained, and that’s not even counting the aforementioned lack of navigational help and such. I constantly found myself wondering if I was supposed to be here or not, if this was the right choice, what was even happening. But that’s… kind of a nice thing. Most games are, in large part, assembled from very familiar parts. If you’ve played a lot of video games, you know how they work and they either do a better or worse job of being precisely what they are. Kandria feels like it might be using familiar parts, but it’s arranged them in a novel way and the whole thing works. It feels exciting in a way that new games so rarely do. You break through the confusion and you find yourself on the other side unsure of how this is supposed to work but happy for the change just the same. First and foremost, the music in this game is gorgeous. No qualifiers, this is one of the best video game soundtracks I’ve heard in a long while, at turns mournful and atmospheric, distinctive and comforting even as it drives the action forward. I was happy to just sit around and listen to the ambiance, and that’s very much to the game’s credit. It sounds wonderful.

A lot is included, but a lot is also neglected

The pixel art that makes up the game’s graphics, meanwhile, is a bit more of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the artwork is astonishingly detailed for the environments, packing loads of character into every bit of environmental detail. I cannot praise the art style enough. And the character portraits in conversations are expressive and lovely. Heck, the animations of the sprites look gorgeous too! Unfortunately, the way that the art is designed also makes it a bit harder to discern the difference between background objects and interactive ones, which can be a bit of a problem. It’s easy for enemies to be hard to see in gameplay, which just never feels good, and there are places where the foreground and background blend together a bit. Gorgeous graphics, but they don’t always let you pick out what you need to see and pay attention to. Even now I don’t know exactly how to describe Kandria. It’s not quite what it looks like, but it is perhaps built from those familiar parts in a different configuration. that it’s a game made to be strange and awkward, to try new things that may or may not ultimately work or pay off for players. And it had a lot of moments of frustration for me, a lot of moments of confusion, times when it was totally unclear what the game wanted me to do, moments of strange behaviors and unclear expectations… But all of that was tempered by the fact that through each bit of frustration, I wanted to see what was next. I wanted to see where this was going. Yeah, it’s kind of weird and kind of awkward, but all of those things are placed in the game in direct service to being a weird and awkward thing that is uniquely itself. And I cannot help but love the game for that and want it to do well, because darn it, I like games where I don’t feel I know exactly what they are within five minutes of picking up the controller. So Kandria is a strange game, but there’s a value in the game being confusing, and weird, and gangly, and distinct. It’s unique in a lot of ways, and that uniqueness is well worth seeing for yourself if what I’ve been saying sounds remotely interesting to you.

Simple combat and excellent platforming mechanics.

This is a pretty big game, and unlike those open-world games where you push just that little further early on to spawn fast travel points for when you need it (Red Dead Redemption 2, methinks), you’re sort of free to do as you please from the start. Bear in mind that wandering the desolate lands as some cybernetic vagabond might be a bit fruitless, but you can scavenge lots of stuff to use as a way to upgrade your blade. Your android, affectionately called Stranger, wields a sword that can cause mayhem with both light and heavy attacks at supersonic speeds. Even better? You can use it as a fishing rod to nab fish swimming in potholes. Take that, Animal Crossing: New Horizons! These developers have thought of everything. Except auto-save. At least you can manually save at a phonebox. If you remember… Anyways… combat is sleek, but a button masher, and the challenge in Kandria won’t be coming from the enemies on show. Instead, three unique ingredients make up the game: platforming, exploration, and the story. Let’s go with platforming, as that’s straightforward enough. Stranger floats a little with their jumping, but it works well. Five Dates

For the first twenty minutes or so, it felt like it was a little too basic and restrictive, but there’s an option to dash, which I thought was horizontal, but allows you to dash upwards, too, ascending levels as fast as a courier needing a poo. It’s needed because Kandria is massive, and each area has floor upon floor to explore for goods and is unrestrictive in that you can explore early on. If doing one of the many errands for the NPCs, you’ll still find yourself traversing a lot of ground, so it’s good to get accustomed to the movements. The same applies to climbing as the game employs similar mechanics to Zelda: BOTW as a gauge appears while climbing. Run out, and you’ll drop down, but because you’re built so damn fine, your android thighs will remain intact, taking zero damage. It is frustrating when falling from great heights, however. Exploration is self-explanatory, and having the option to wander is good, but it’s probably best to befriend the sweary (toggle options available) NPCs you run around for. That way, you have a bit of purpose and can level up along the way.

Kandria is an excellent indie title

The third surprising element of Kandria is the story. Dialogue offers a point and click type dialogue tree where you can choose a good range of options, often witty and even a little sneaky – i.e. lying to a character. Illustrations are literally ‘sketchy’ and serve as a visual dialogue type presentation. I wasn’t a fan of the art style, but the interactions were endearing. Perhaps a bit of a wildcard, but I liked the pixel art visuals (not usually a fan). Though they lack the realism in movement, they resemble Flashback. Finally, the music was fantastic. The game begins by being resurrected as an initially nameless android by the girl Catherine. She leads you to her tribe of Noka. Not everyone there welcomes the human-like machine, however, as some believe the androids were partly responsible for the calamity – the point in time when the earth turned gray and desolate. Growing food becomes difficult on the surface of the earth, which is why the Noka are the last humans not to live underground. In addition to their tribe, there is also the Semi, led by sisters named Innis and Islay. Though there is always friction among the tribes resulting from ever-dwindling resources, the only real threat is the wraws. FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDYS: HELP WANTED

They are a warlike people who kill everything and everyone. After Catherine has introduced us to the others, we are allowed to do tasks for her, such as repairing lines or running errands. The main mission revolves around helping the Noka maintain their supply. For this, contact must be established with the semi-sisters and action must also be taken against the wraws. But there are also up to 50 side missions and races that also allow you to explore the world. Because the map of Kandria is 2.5 million square meters and there are about 250 rooms that connect to each other. So there is a lot to discover. Primarily, you can run, jump, and teleport forward a bit. Additionally, the game allows you to fish and sit. Caught fish can be sold to buy more valuable items. You can also find objects like newspapers that tell you more about the world. You can also find a total of 33 outfits, such as the camouflage look that allows you to become invisible. At the beginning there are hardly any opponents and only simple jump passages. However, the further you advance, the more complex and difficult the rooms become. Sometimes so difficult that you die in one tour. Here it is important to use the few skills skillfully and to find out what the room wants from you. Sometimes the rhythm of the fountains has to be adjusted, sometimes the trampoline has to be jumped on in order to reach the right height. The developers were really imaginative, which is also due to the gameplay: Kandria is an open world game. All places should be accessible from the start. Therefore, there is no way to upgrade skills. Instead, different objects are needed in the rooms to interact, which affect your basic skills. However, you can upgrade your weapon, a sword. There are five level-ups in total. I didn’t really notice it though. Because as good and challenging as the rooms and obstacles are, the opponents are just as boring. As an android, you face off against wild animals, robotic zombies, and the aforementioned wraws. But apart from the fact that the first two enemy types are few and far between, the fights are over far too quickly.
