JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R Deluxe Edition Switch NSP Free Download Unfitgirl For a multimedia franchise that’s been around for 35 years, it’s been a while since JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure received a AAA game on home consoles, with 2016’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven being the most recent non-phone release. That’s why fans of the franchise have been excited for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R – a remaster of the 2014 fighting game that preceded Eyes of Heaven – which is coming to Switch and other platforms on September 2. I recently had an opportunity to play a small portion of the game and speak with the folks from Bandai Namco to learn more about what’s new in this enhanced version of the fanservice-filled fighter. Now, look, I’m not going to pretend like I’m some superfan of the JoJo franchise, and when it comes to fighting games, I’m generally a filthy casual outside of anything that’s not Dead or Alive or SoulCalibur. What I can appreciate, however, is the massive amount of work that it takes to bring a game from the PS3 era to today’s systems and make it feel like a modern game. And from what I played of All-Star Battle R at Summer Game Fest, there seems to be a lot of behind-the-scenes adjustments that were made to smooth out some of the edges of the original. “Calling it a remaster is kind of an understatement,” said Ryan Wagner of Bandai Namco. “If it was a car, we’ve taken out the engine, and then we gave it brand new parts and a brand-new chassis and a brand-new paint job.” At a mechanical level, Wagner said that hitboxes and hurtboxes have been totally adjusted, meaning that attacks will now land more precisely than in the original release. Physics have been tweaked in the game’s engine, making animations look and feel more fluid compared to the original release, and making everything feel faster to control. For those who are unfamiliar, fights in All-Star Battle R take place on a 2.5D plane, which means that while combat normally controls from a side-scrolling perspective, it’s also possible to occasionally leverage the foreground or background of the environment. This is done by utilizing a quickstep dodge-esque ability to orbit around your enemy. There are also environmental hazards to play around with, like dropping a massive chandelier onto your enemy in the most over-the-top way possible. It all has a moderately heavy feeling of weight and impact to it – I would say heavier than Dead or Alive, but maybe a bit more maneuverable than Street Fighter.

A variety of game modes

I found it all relatively easy to pick up and play, and for those who are new to fighting games or just want to appreciate the ridiculous style that is the essence of JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure All-Star Battle R, this rerelease adds an Easy Beat Mode designed to make the game more approachable. This essentially removes some of the complexity involved in chaining together advanced combos by making it significantly easier to pull off some of the more exciting moves in the game, including supers. JoJo has always been known for its flair, so including this type of playstyle accommodation is a way to make sure that fans of the franchise who may not be great at fighting games can still experience all the game has to offer, Wagner said. That aforementioned paint job has gotten quite a bit of detail-work performed, too. When All-Star Battle originally released, the in-game character models were heavily inspired by the art style of the JoJo manga, as the anime had only been out for a couple of seasons, Wagner said. For All-Star Battle R, character models and voice acting were both “entirely redone” to align with the anime more closely. Sweet Surrender VR

That’s impressive, considering that the game will launch with over 50 playable characters, with even more coming down the road as paid DLC. It’s worth mentioning that somewhere around 75% of those characters also have what’s called a Stand Ability, which is basically an entirely separate moveset unique to each character that can be triggered by hitting the right bumper. It even changes how Easy Beat combos will work, meaning that there’s a large skill ceiling in this game for players who want to get the most out of their time with it. That’s without even getting into other combat options, like calling assist characters into battle. While Wagner says All-Star Battle R won’t contain any meaningful advancements to the overall lore of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, the game does feature a new mode – appropriately named All-Star Battle mode – which is all about letting franchise fans experience “dream matchups,” pitting characters that might normally never interact with each other against one another in matches with specific criteria, like opponents with extra health and strength. That’s one way in which players can unlock new cosmetic items to use in other modes, too. There are additional new modes coming to All-Star Battle R too, Wagner said, although I didn’t get to see these during my brief session with the game.

Stunning visuals authentic to Hirohiko Araki’s Style

If the Switch version performs well at a technical level, should be a fitting way to celebrate the 35th anniversary of this off-the-wall series, and fans and newcomers alike will seemingly have a lot to sink their teeth into when the game releases on Switch on September 2, 2022. With JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle, developer CyberConnect2 has once again treated a beloved IP with not just respect, but enthusiasm, providing fans of the long-running manga with an experience they can properly geek out over. Strictly as a fighting game, All-Star Battle fares far better than the developer’s previous efforts. Though it’s not very fundamentally sound, I found myself enjoying it both in spite of, and because of the potential imbalances that sprung forth from its crazy mechanics. As ever, developer CyberConnect2’s presentation is impeccable from the get-go, with a prismatically-colored intro movie that establishes JoJo’s tone of infectious energy. The best part is that all the clips that look like cutscenes are actually just victory animations, or in-match footage. It looks every bit as great once the action starts, which says a lot about how well the aesthetic from the manga has been realized. Sadly, few in the west know what a JoJo is, or why their adventures are so very bizarre. Fortunately, an understanding of the Joestar family lineage is not a requirement to appreciate the incredible style on display here. The striking character silhouettes, iconic poses, and emotive facial expressions of Hirohiko Araki’s original artwork are preserved beautifully, giving All-Star Battle a truly audacious, one-of-a-kind aesthetic. Most of the characters play just as uniquely as they look, too. A lot of care was taken to incorporate the backstories and powers of the characters into their mechanics, even when it required building discrete systems just for one specific fighter. For instance, Johnny Joestar is paraplegic, and without the use of his legs, he has very little mobility by default. But with the quick press of a button, he can summon his trusty steed and fight from horseback. There’s advantages to both stances, and learning when to fight mounted or unmounted is key to using the character effectively.

50 playable characters from all JoJo arcs

Not only do touches like this make the cast more interesting to learn, it makes them feel even more connected to the source material. This commitment to authenticity runs even deeper than in other licensed brawlers like Injustice or Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Wolverine never gets his healing factor, but JoJo’s Funny Valentine can pull a fresh copy of himself from another dimension to get back to full health. The Flash never gets to actually control time, but Jotaro and Dio sure do. Just about every major ability these characters had in the manga is represented in some way or another, which makes for great fan-service, and sometimes, great matches. I say “sometimes” because as creative, out there, and downright fun these abilities can be to use, they break most of the rules of traditional fighting games. One character, Kira, has a special move set comprised almost completely of unblockables, and one of his supers allows him to turn back time, negating any damage he received during that time, and deactivating any special abilities his opponent may have activated. He’s one of the coolest characters ever in a fighting game, but his move set seems like something just waiting to be exploited. These off-the-wall elements make All-Star Battle feel fresh and exciting, but at the cost of balance.

Between all the zaniness, the fundamentals of JoJo’s fighting engine are pretty rocky. Walk speeds are slow, as are most attacks that I’d want to use for poking and footsies, so matches tend to have that slightly awkward Mortal Kombat-style flow. There’s a lot of dashing, jumping, and throwing out random specials. Hit-boxes on jump-in attacks seem rather suspect, crossing-up randomly in odd situations. The ebb and flow of combat simply never approaches the effortless panache that the fighters themselves constantly exude.JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R consists of All Star Battle Mode, Arcade Mode, Online Mode, Versus Mode, Practice Mode, and Gallery Mode. The main mode, All Star Battle Mode, features not only clashes between characters from the original game, but also brand new battles that are unique to All-Star Battle R. You can play through over 100 battles with various settings and conditions. All Star Battle Mode also offers special cosmetic skins for characters and unique illustrations that can be enjoyed in gallery mode. Outside of combat, All-Star Battle does only enough to get by. Online is playable, but lacks the comprehensive feature set found in other brawlers. Singularity

Story mode is basically a cliff notes version of the manga, summarized through bland text dumps during excessively long loading screens. Most disappointingly of all, the training mode doesn’t provide the kind of powerful information that Killer Instinct or Injustice offer, leaving the finer points of combat obscured.Still, there is some depth to be mined here for experienced pugilists. You just need to dig to find it. Style dodge, stand cancels, jump cancels, and more are all present, allowing for some pretty nasty setups and extended combos. But unless you experiment rigorously, or fire up a web-browser, it’s all pretty tough to stumble upon. JoJo lags behind other modern fighters in its ability to surface the nuances of its combat.
