ITZY is currently one of the biggest girl group debuts of the year. Their DALLA DALLA debut back in February pushed them towards the top of the industry, with the track becoming immensely popular throughout the KPOP world. And they continue to push forward with their very first comeback! Returning today, the group released the music video for ICY at midnight (KST) and their first mini-album, IT’z ICY, at 6PM (KST – just a few hours ago). ICY is loaded from the very start and it gets you with its infectious beat. I like how the song doesn’t take a breather. As they approached the slightly less upbeat sections (such as the pre-chorus), you would expect some slow energy. But the song builds up suspense instead, keeping you hooked to the song. I like the funky and grooviness of the instrumental, which kept me hooked. And I like how they incorporated a hip-hop vibe to the song, despite its instrumentation leaning towards a different direction. Their vocals seem to be the weakest aspect. They were pushing too hard to stay on top of the instrumental. The hooks were interesting. I didn’t like how they framed the chorus initially. But given the infectious nature of the song, the chorus has grown immensely. The final weak point of the song has to be the dance break. As much as I think an intense dance break was ideal, I felt this one was a little too awkward. It didn’t feel balanced with the rest of the track.Unfitgirl.COM SEXY GAMES

Maybe they went down a little too low for my liking or it just didn’t carry enough of the upbeat energy to get my approval. I personally liked their approach with the music video. The lighting, camera angles, quality and the setting overall reminded me of TWICE’s Likey music video. They had the background actors stare at the ITZY members, who were flaunting their confidence to the public. The actor’s expressions, however, were a little not so convincing. Their amazement didn’t seem like they were amazed. But I guess they did that to further highlight the confidence. I think my favourite part has to be the final montage when they were on the electric tram. The dance was pretty good. The chorus was very underwhelming, especially since it had all the hooks loaded in the song. But I enjoyed every other part. I liked how they slowly added each member to the start of the dance. I thought that looked quite cool. The dance break choreography also looked cool and edgy. Just the music wasn’t too my liking. And I thought their final choreography montage was the best bit overall! The fact is, ICEY starts weak. When you start the game, there’s no narration, music, and has a rather weak tutorial that tells you what to do but disappears quickly. Once you get a grip on that, you move to the right and button mash through enemies until you reach a large boss who you can take down quite easily. Then the game acts like it crashes and starts in a room asking you inane questions “Are you King Link? Did you remove the mask?” Umm, what? It then has you choose a difficulty from easy, medium or hard through questions and restart the game again.

ICEY Fast-paced Combat.

You’re back to the main menu but the game won’t start, though after failing to start the game multiple times you get the ability to start the game “with a narrator”. Suddenly you get an opening cutscene, and the game starts over at the same point, only this time, no tutorial appears and instead you get a narrator. This is really a good example of the entire game in a microcosm. You can hear in my first look how confused I was and I was confused even on my second (post first look) playthrough, but after a while I started to understand ICEY. ICEY tries very hard to subvert your expectations. It wants to be seen as a typical brawler, so that when it does something different like restart the game from the beginning and now gives you a narration, sound, and music, it feels different than the first time. This is similar to how the Stanley Parable subverts the expectations of being a simple walking simulator, how Portal subverted the expectation of being a puzzle game, or even how Deadpool the movie appears to subvert the expectations of being a love movie, or a superhero movie. The thing is each of these pieces of media, the game starts in one genre and does something different and unique with it. ICEY’s goal is to be talked about in that same rarified air as Stanley Parable and Portal, and it tries very hard. The problem with ICEY isn’t how it does this. It’s more that it doesn’t develop the game it’s trying to subvert. In fact, the worst thing one can do in ICEY is to follow the arrows completely and only see the game as it’s narrator intends.X-Men Origins Wolverine

The fact is, if you do that, it’s one of the worst games I’ve played this year. Admittedly it’s not broken, but it’s also not fun. The combat is good, but there’s not a lot of reason for it. The story is weak, and the experience is underwhelming and frustrating. What this means is that as a brawler/platformer, ICEY isn’t very good. It would be easy to leave it like that, however, that’s how the narrator intends the game to be played. I think it’s pretty clear the developer had a different opinion. ICEY isn’t made for the person who follows instructions well, instead, it expects the player to explore and ignore it when the game says to fall into a hole when instead the player can jump the gap and climb over an obstacle. While the gameplay doesn’t directly reference it, it’s doing things like this where ICEY opens up and starts to really play with the conventions it makes. Suddenly, you can skip an entire level, or find a secret room, a hidden achievement, a new piece of the story. You’ll hear the narrator get frustrated with you, you might find a new level, and at times the arrows accept your alternate path, but other times the narrator will try to force you back on the original story path. The game changes from a run of the mill brawler to rather something special. There are numerous interesting scenes, and experiences that are worth seeing and there are so many alternate endings, each with its own achievement. The fact is, ICEY is there so that when you break the game, it’ll wink at you knowingly and show you what it’s been hiding from you all along. But there are problems here.

Incredible Combos.

If the brawler was better, fans might be able to believe it’s the real game and the alternate parts of the game would come as a real surprise. Instead, I tried playing through the game once without any side paths and found myself frightfully annoyed with it. This came after playing through all the side paths and seeing the joy of the game. The main game itself is weak. The real problem with ICEY’s game is varied. The characters in ICEY look good, but they repeat quite often til the point where you’re fighting the same enemies over and over. The bosses are inventive and quite interesting, but they feel a little flat, and they too repeat. ICEY, herself, is extremely two dimensional. The combat itself really holds the game back, as it feels like you can just button mash the same combo and get the best results from it. ICEY is able to buy more combos and power them up but just using light or heavy attacks over and over are good enough. There’s no depth to the combat, enemies are just punching bags, so unlike games like the Batman Arkham series and the Spiderman series, there’s not a real reason to focus on anything other than what works for you. In addition the secrets in the game are mixed. In my first look, I skipped the entire second level and didn’t realize it. What happens at the end of the second level? You go to the third, so basically I skipped a level in the game that would lead me to where I already was. Why was that level important? Sometimes you might find a funny joke, an interesting achievement or more, and sometimes you’ll just find a room with a little cash in it.Smurfs Kart Switch NSP

The variety in this is good, but every time I found a simple cash room I was disappointed because the other secrets clearly got far more development time, and work better. The story here is interesting. Judging the story based on just the main path is weak. You have to go kill Judah because the game tells you to, and tries to give you motivation but it doesn’t feel good enough. Just go kill the big bad guy because we said so. Take one look at the ever-growing library of Nintendo Switch eShop titles and the term ‘2D side-scrolling action game’ crops up more often than not. Nintendo Switch is already home to many and fans of the genre certainly have a great and extensive range to choose from. Developer FantaBlade Network adds its futuristic slasher ICEY into the mix and although the title won’t take more than a couple of play sessions to get through, its odd yet unique spin on the genre offers an experience that’s more than worth its asking price. You play as ICEY, a robot humanoid that wouldn’t look out of place in any sci-fi anime past or present. She’s armed with a sword, a hefty amount of agility and a distinct lack of speech. The omnipresent voice you do hear in this game is the ‘developer’ who explains the goings on around ICEY, and it’s a voice you’ll need to get used to quickly as it’s there until the credits roll. It’s quickly made apparent that the main objectives here are to take down the evil and powerful ‘Judas’, defeat Judas’ mini-boss comrades and to try and piece together the reasoning behind ICEY’s existence in the process. Without the constant metacommentary.

Massive Cyborg Bosses.

this title would easily fall into the bargain bin of cookie-cut sci-fi hack ‘n’ slashers out there. However, with the narrator continually bugging you to follow his every instruction and direction, it’s increasingly difficult to refrain from sticking two fingers up and going your own way – like when you were told to stay put at the shopping centre but couldn’t help but run off to go on your own adventures. Plastered over the beautifully detailed high-tech backdrops – and forcefully pointed out by the narrator – there are glaringly obvious arrows showing the way towards Judas’ whereabouts. It’s push/pull factor of seeing these and hearing the narrator almost shout at you to go in the said direction that makes this title more about playing against the rules than rushing to the finish line. Wander off and he’ll get agitated. Get back on track and he’ll turn smug. It’s a nice touch and certainly makes the experience more immersive with a cleverly reactive voice constantly hovering over you delve deeper in. There’s hidden cash to help upgrade your move-set, humorous dialogue to be subjected to and other incentives (no spoilers here!) to tempt you away from the main story focus. This isn’t to say it’s all plain sailing, though. At various points, we find ourselves reaching for the option to turn the voice off entirely and instead opt for text only. Yes, the narrator does a thorough and often playful job of dishing out context to ICEY’s actions, but it does have a tendency to become irritating.

Still, hearing the narrator becomes increasingly frustrated the more you disobey his instructions did make us chuckle. The game handles very well mainly due to its accessible control system that’s pleasantly uncomplicated to get to grips with. Slicing and chopping your way through a small but varied roster of enemy robots is a silky smooth affair with ICEY executing impressive acrobatic kills with just a few presses. Pressing a combination of ‘Y’ and ‘X’ sees ICEY chain together a satisfying sequence of quick jabs and slower but more powerful slices. Pressing ‘A’ stops your chosen foe in their tracks and triggers slow-mo lethal finishing attack. It’s dramatic but it works. Using money from fallen enemies and boss battles opens up more powerful and interesting move sets that, when levelled up to their max, makes for some astounding multi-chain kills. It’s this simplistic yet effective approach to the combat system that helps makes this title home to straightforward yet interesting playthroughs – it’s simple to jump straight back into the action and to get to grips with the mechanics. Hammering the buttons to make ICEY aimlessly fling her sword does the job, but learning the combo’s creates a dazzling display of manic manoeuvres that’s a treat to witness. Combat isn’t just relegated to the ground, though. Squeezing the ‘R’ trigger and ICEY warps to any given direction and taking the combat off the floor and into the air isn’t just useful; it’s fun and addictive and adds a layer of strategy to the mix. Plus, it makes you feel even more awesome when it works well. And for those out there who tend to hoover up every item and max-boost every stat.

There’s the option to go back and revisit all of the locations which help gives ICEY some replay value. A simple and functional horde mode is also included, but it’s nothing special to bring you back for more. ICEY is a 2D side-scrolling action game. As you follow the narrator’s omnipresent voice, you will see through ICEY’s eyes and learn the truth about her world. “Alright, you caught me! This ISN’T really just a simple 2D action game, and you WON’T be seeing through ICEY’s eyes… NOR will you learn the truth about her world.” says the narrator. “ICEY is a Meta game in disguise. The narrator will constantly urge you in one direction, but you must ask, “Why? Why am I following his directions? Why can’t I learn the truth about this world and ICEY’s purpose here?” Fight against his tyranny, and uncover what’s really going on for yourself! In fact, you can become ICEY, and let loose the shackles of your own identity. You are ICEY, and ICEY is you… if you want it that way. Feel free to keep hold of your own self, if you wish. The story begins with the narrator explaining that the villain Judas must be killed and that ICEY must be the one to do it. ICEY is floating in a cryogenic capsule and the game prompts you to press any button to continue. If you press nothing, the narrator comments that ICEY isn’t ready and the game soon ends. Don’t worry, the game loops back to this point and gives you the chance to continue as intended. This is just one of many instances where the game gets meta and breaks the 4th wall. Another early example is how the difficulty is set. Tame It!
