But I admit that I have never thought more deeply, more empathetically about what the daily life of a person wandering the streets looks like. And in this sense, the simulation RPG Hobo: Tough Life from the Czech studio Perun Creative opened my eyes. When you’re down, exhausted, soaked, frozen, hungry, poisoned, sick and covered in your own excrement, and the only thing that gets you out of this mess is a handout from a passer-by, his distaste and rejection, accompanied by an accompanying note like “louse”, ” forget it”, “go away!”, “let me” hurt like a knife because it just signed your ortel.The hobo doesn’t mess with you, just like life doesn’t mess with the homeless. What is missing is a comprehensive tutorial that would guide you by the hand and teach you how to survive on the street. A life full of mistakes is the best school. As a budding ungrateful with memory loss, you just don’t know how to walk in it properly. You’re not used to picking out trash cans, and in one piece you reach for some humus, which sticks to your clothes, which you tear at the same time with clumsy handling. You can’t choose the right words, so passers-by won’t engage in conversation, let alone throw a crumb. And besides, you have no idea where you are. So, you are in Praslav, a city inspired especially by Prague with the easily recognizable Sherwood near the Main Station or the Žižkov church. Cities with a Czech atmosphere. Every step of the way, you are watched by some local tenement house, which has a shop on the ground floor with the sign “Fruits and Vegetables”. However, you don’t know Praslav and you don’t know anyone in it. And even after dozens of hours, it can easily happen that you discover an unknown corner and a character in it that starts a new plot line. The creators managed to create a very complex network of back alleys, canals, underpasses and overpasses on a relatively small map, which give the feeling of a hidden enormity. You will learn to know the main streets quickly, but finding your way around the dark corners is quite a challenge, even with the use of a map. I really enjoyed this aspect of the game. Maybe because there are no distracting question marks to point out something interesting.

Something is rotting here

You just have to look around and try to knock on the door here and there, behind which a pharmacy, an electronics store or a retired doctor may be hiding. And when, after many hours, you discover a secluded square with a luxury container, which contains not only empty bottles and moldy food, but also real treasures such as a sofa, on which you can sleep better than on the bench in front of Hlavák, you have Christmas before the approaching hard winter. As a homeless person, you despise practically nothing. Every cigarette butt gives you a little boost to your ever-decreasing morale, every residue at the bottom of a liquor bottle warms you up for a while, every uneaten salami quenches your hunger. And you line your pockets with everything else from junk to broken toys to used erotica magazines, because what if. Grinding takes on quite a new dimension in Hobo: Tough Life. A mechanism that grows into boredom in many games gets real meaning here. Do you see the dustbin? You immediately rush to it, because with a bit of luck, after finding something better, your life can noticeably improve, but even ordinary junk brings you closer to something better, because you can make new items from it. Every morning you go around your chosen places with hope, hoping that the garbagemen have already taken out the bins and the residents have had time to fill them with new goodies. Plus, hoarding is fun thanks to the risk associated with the rummaging through the trash minigame. So-called shrapnel, various humus, which you don’t want to dig into and get dirty, are waiting for you in the waste container. But at first, the game only alerts you to one of those humps, and then you’re already riding your own stinky t-shirt. However, with each bin dug through, you get better at so-called farting, until one day you advance to a new level and experience the luxury of being able to dodge two shrapnel. Over time, the smaller bins will stop posing any risk for you, you will avoid everything thanks to experience, but you will already be attracted by the biggest containers with the most interesting loot. And also new risks. You have to fight for the best pieces that no longer smelled good to the original owners in another mini-game, in which the only thing is to press the mouse button at the right time. And this is something that cannot be completely learned, so pulling out the most valuable pieces is still a challenge, even after tens of hours, with the risk of soiling or damaging the clothes. Whatever you do in the game, you get better at it with repetition. The more you talk to people, the more likely they won’t reject you. Likewise, you will improve in the very discipline of begging, making your own things, trading with them.

We, the king of the homeless

There’s even theft and lockpicking (much easier than in Kingdom Come: Deliverance ) if the path of a less honest ungrateful person tempts you. These are all things you just do in your free time, which a homeless person seems to have quite a lot of. You will rather feel that there is no time to spare. Morale is constantly falling, hunger is rising, it’s getting tougher outside, and you’re trying to keep all your indicators, including health, at acceptable levels in every possible way. I wrote that the beginnings are rough without proper guidance, and it is really possible that you may not even survive the first day. Life on the street is really hard. All it takes is one bad decision, one bliwajz poisoning to throw off all your stats, and your emaciated body will never be found under the bridge again. But death is not final. You can and should continue after it. You wake up in the same place as at the beginning with an empty inventory (you can buy your stuff back from a “friend”) and with permanently reduced maximum health, stamina, morale and other attributes. It makes sense to continue like this. As a player, you are much more experienced, you know what to avoid, you already know some places to find help, but at the same time you carry the scars of your mistakes and it is a surprisingly great feeling. In addition, you will not lose the hours invested, you are still leveled up and your bunker looks the same as before you left. Spintires 

The bunker is another of the many, many aspects of this surprisingly full game. There are several dedicated places in Praslav where you can set up your own corner. Such places include the all-important barrel, in which you can burn practically anything to keep yourself warm for a while, and the DIY table, where you can repair clothing, craft consumables, but also elements of the future camp – roofs will protect you from the rain, walls will provide form and found furniture it will make your nest cozy, add storage spaces and help unlock various bonuses. And I haven’t even mentioned that Hobo: Tough Life is actually not a classic sandbox survival game. Yes, it’s survival, it’s a sandbox, there’s even co-op, it’s entirely up to you whether you’ll beg, whether you’ll work hard, whether you’ll build a base… No one really forces you to do anything, and you can function without it anyway. But what makes the game significantly different from similar survival simulations is its story. Hobo is a full-on RPG. In addition to character upgrades and a plethora of unlockable perks, there’s a vast array of tasks to take on when you’re not picking out bins and begging. Some missions are easier if you just have to get someone something in exchange for something else. But there are also more sophisticated cases, such as when you investigate numerous murders of homeless people

And I will too. You can go to work and dig holes or deliver pizza for pretty decent money, you can work for the police and tell them what is happening on the street. You can become a drug dealer, a professional drunk, a repairman… There is really, really much to do, thanks to which you will not be bored even after several tens of hours in the streets of Praslav. I haven’t even mentioned your quest to become King of the Homeless – to take a position that has long been vacant and restore a tradition to once again shine a better light on the homeless among other people. But for this you need the votes of local influential homeless people, some of whom have their own factions – there are ex-criminals, junkies, drunkards, but also quite honest, well-behaved homeless people and people who have chosen life on the streets voluntarily and boycott the system by squatting in abandoned building.
