Poisoned and left for dead, Louis’s bastard son emerges from the smoke and ashes of Germany’s battlefields under the guise of the Moon King. With hatred festering in his heart, he has employed the aid of diabolical and forbidden sciences to build an army the likes of which the world had not seen since the days of Lucifer’s rebellion. Now the dead rise from their mass graves, seeking vengeance upon the king that demanded their deaths while he basked in glory. Can you, the Sun King’s bravest musketeer, stop the approaching eclipse before it swallows the sun?Timing your actions is critical to success in this game, as a correctly timed jump or at tack can be the difference between glorious victory and shameful defeat. Furthermore, studying and understanding your enemies will be of utter importance. Only by getting to know your demons can you hope to find their weaknesses – and exploit them. For instance, many foes can hurt not just you but also each other. Goading them into slaughtering their own is often vital to success. Lastly, a word of warning: The Moon King’s army is not composed of conventional soldiers. These are the living dead, and simply killing them once is not enough to guarantee their surrender. There is only one antidote against the cancer of undeath: gunpowder and shot. Landing the killing blow with your musket will tear apart the body and make further resurrection impossible. Keep in mind that you can also shoot corpses before they revive.

Carve a bloody path…

Development on the game began in January, 2018. The feature we worked the longest on is the musket. There was hardly a precedent from other games for a similar mechanic, so we could not simply take an existing mechanic and put our own spin on it. Instead it was necessary to dive into and really understand the 17th century in order to transform the historical rules of early gunpowder weapons into a viable gameplay mechanic for a 2D action platformer. We spent a lot of time visiting museums and poring over books in order to make the game as authentic as we could. After we had a foundation that is accurate, we set free our creativity and created a typical “Andrade Game” that is always an interplay between history and morbid phantasy. I never really thought I would go back to my roots. A dark basement with a 12 pack of Tab soda and a copy of Ghost n Goblins that my cousin rented for me from the store because my parents said I couldn’t get it. But this game got pretty close. The game managed to keep a solid difficulty throughout my playthrough with only a few times where things were either too hard or too easy. Enemies tend to bullet hell you with a lot of projectiles but the dev added in friendly fire and that will add a new layer to gameplay where instead of just trying to find the right moment to dodge and attack there are also a lot of opportunities to line up a situation where one enemy will kill another allowing you to progress with less hassle. Some of the maps you will be going through will simply be walking from one side to the other without a whole lot of challenge but when there is a challenge there is A LOT of challenge. I was pretty disappointed by the map where you could fly a renaissance flying machine that was shown in the trailer. It only lasts about 2 minutes and has no real challenge to it. Most of the enemies are relatively basic and aside from that fact are still well done. You have everything you expect to see in a side-scrolling horror such as skeletons and zombies with more unique enemies sprinkled in. All of these enemies have pretty normal side scroller attacks like throwing projectiles in a certain way or walking towards the player at different speeds. The only real variation is the amount of health they have but there is one enemy that stands out and is pretty annoying. There is an enemy skull that you find the origins later that will follow you throughout the game that is probably the most obnoxious part of the combat. It spawns in random spaces and uses random abilities (I think there is a pattern but I couldn’t really figure it out) and normally this wouldn’t be a problem but the two situations where it becomes a nuisance is when the skull spawns outside of the screens borders and launches projectiles that you won’t see coming, heat seek on the player, and can really screw up a situation and the second situation is where the skull will spawn using an AoE ability in an area that you need to go or right on top of you. If you are out of ammo or get caught in the AoE you will be almost instantly killed.

Face the unknown…

The weapons do leave a lot to be desired. Most of the secondary weapons are pretty damn useless or at the very best situational. You have weird things like putting a shield on a balloon, or putting a weird multishot thing on a balloon, or getting a heat seeking skull that doesn’t really seem to work well. I never really used a whole lot of the optional weapons and as for that matter never really used the musket a whole lot. Range combat in general is pretty slow and clunky, it works great in certain situations but for the most part you’re going to be dodging and weaving with your rapier. The artwork is pretty damn amazing in this game, the story line is not. There isn’t a lot I can say about the art work. It’s crisp, clean, and fits well into every setting. All of the enemies and attacks look exactly as they should. The story on the other hand is kind of confusing. It’s mostly told through cutscenes after you beat a boss or progress to a certain point in the game. You can get the general gist of the story but might be a little confused about the details until the end of the game. I’m always hesitant to buy any indie horror game over 10$ because 90% of the time they have no story, no originality, and no heart. But this game breaks the mold on not only the gothic style but also the horror and side scrolling genre. Fox Girls Never Play Dirty

Heidelberg 1693 knocked me out of my socks and kicked me in the guts with its insane violent tone. I have never in my life seen such a violent and hardcore side-scroller/action-platformer. Although the game looks and plays out similar to some cult classic side-scroller/platformers, such as Super-Castlevania and others, there is enough style and features in place for it to carve out its own identity. This is the first time I’ve seen a side-scroller/ action-platformer set in the late 16th hundreds, which made the game really really interesting and really really tricky at times. From the costumes to the world design, the game looks phenomenal and combines ultra-violent, blood and gore-infested setting. Plot: The year is 1693: War engulfs Europe as France, led by the illustrious Louis XIV, battles the Grand Alliance. He is driven by the belief that the sun – his sun – should shine upon all peoples of the world. His enemies are as numerous as the stars, but it is the moon that reigns over the night. As Louis XIV becomes more delusional and out of touch with his people, his people are in grave danger, as Louis’ bastard son, poisoned and left for dead, emerges from the smoke and ashes of Germany’s battlefields under the guise of the Moon King.

Die, have fun, die again!

The Moon King’s heart is infested with pure rage and evil, seeking only death and destruction. He has employed the aid of diabolical and forbidden sciences to build an army, the likes of which the world had not seen since the days of Lucifer’s rebellion. He summons the dead from their graves and marches them into the living. Seeing this grave danger to his empire, King Louis XIV calls forward his bravest Musketeer to stop the approaching eclipse before it engulfs every living being. Gameplay: Spreading across 20 unique levels full of blood and supernatural resistance, Heidelberg 1693 lets you take control of a brave Musketeer in his daring quest to stop the Moon King and his army of the dead and demonic. The game goes through some clever and challenging stages. By design, the platformer aspect of the game is not that hard to traverse, but what makes it hard is its overall style, choices in movement machines, and weapons. Fight off a horde of undead coming for me? Seems fair enough; nothing I’ve not done before, but with a bloody Musket?!! Every time I wanted to shoot I needed to make an important judgment on which one should I go for first, the one at the top shooting at me or the one undead that was coming for me from below!

Being a single-shot weapon, you will need to reload after every shot, making the Musketeer open and vulnerable to attack. Thankfully the undead are slow and sluggish. Our hero comes in with his trusty Rapier, a fine melee weapon made to pierce through skin and bones. There are also some unique secondary weapons, but they are one-purpose utility and not very useful. I really loved how you can utilize your Rapier through the game with a few unique moves and deal with almost anything the game throws at you, from simple touches to high jump spin kills. Many would think that with a few limited-range moves and slow firing weapons, our Musketeer would not have any chance against the demons. But thankfully the platformer aspect was designed in such a way that it gives you a fighting chance, while also making this challenging for our protagonist. Making things much worse, from time to time a floating demon head will appear and start reviving all the undead. I highly recommend killing it before it starts spawning too many. Doesn’t matter how much you try to escape, you will still get hit. There are health drops spread around every scene and some hilarious moments, like when you rescue a damsel in distress and kiss her she will drop health points. Forza Horizon 4 Ultimate Edition

The end game will become difficult to traverse with cannonballs dropping, enemy soldiers shooting at you and giants pounding the ground; it really feels more like a survival marathon than a platformer at times. The only saving grace is the checkpoints. Few and far between, the checkpoints seemed okay at first, then I realized oh I spawn with one health point. And then I got instantly smashed. At times the game feels like a breeze; the enemy types are slow and soft, and then BAM, out of nowhere the game throws you a curveball, which totally throws you off guard. Although there are no elemental challenges, the multilayer, multi-type enemy spawns are really hard to get past and it was really a series of trial-and-error before successfully getting across. World design: Heidelberg and its surroundings seem to be heavily inspired by late 16th-century architecture. The world fits the game’s grim, bloody, war-engulfed tone just perfectly. I expected the game’s lighting tone to be dark and wet, but it was actually bright in places with brightly colored backdrops, which surprisingly fitted the game’s theme perfectly and added a great flavor. Heidelburg is tough to fully recommend. I really don’t want to give it a thumbs down as I can tell a lot of love and passion was poured into this game. It’s difficult to give the game a thumbs up though because of its disjointed nature. I want to give a thumbs middle but alas it doesn’t exist.
