In this one- to two-player “tricky physics” simulation game, there are so many moments where you can marvel at the station’s endearingly relentless attention to detail, worry about drifting out into the great unknown, or just get on your fellow cosmonaut’s nerves. It’s a high-production-value effort from indie studio 2pt Interactive, but when you really boil it down, Heavenly Bodies is about zero-gravity physical comedy, which I love. The trailer depicts cosmonauts performing various duties — adjusting the angle of a satellite dish, watering plants, and guiding a super-long crate through a cargo bay — yet it’s really not that straightforward. In this game, you have independent control of your arms and hands, and even the simple act of moving through a tunnel can be a struggle. You’ll end up spinning and contorting and squeezing your way in — sometimes on purpose, many times on accident. It’s one of those “go with the flow” experiences where you have to eventually learn to take a breath and not rush. I expected some QWOP-style absurdity, but I was surprised by just how long it took me to get accustomed to the way these bodies operate. That’s not a complaint, though! While even the PC version is pushing gamepads (so that you can use one analog stick per arm), there are at least multiple control modes, the easiest of which is noticeably smoother when it comes to getting from Point A to Point B without a fuss. The idea of pulling yourself along to build up momentum is easy to grasp. But once you’re “upside down,” and the contextual arm controls essentially shift — or you’re in a perilous situation — then panic can set in. This leads to these lively unplanned moments that are even funnier with another player in the mix. With good intentions, you can annoy each other. With a fiendish co-op rivalry, you can piss each other off. It’s a patience-tester. Heavenly Bodies is split up into seven distinct scenarios, each with optional challenges to complete like finding and securing a hidden trinket or finishing the goal with the hardest and least forgiving of three control modes, Newtonian, rather than Classic or Assisted. On our first run-through, most of the levels took anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, and we ended up with a total playtime of around five hours, with plenty of room for replayability. That might sound pretty brief, but for me, all seven levels were memorable in different ways, and the art direction never takes the easy way out

Customisable control mode difficulty

Whether you’re mining far-off asteroids, pulling yourself through pitch-black ventilation shafts one hand at a time, or using crane arms to build a telescope. In lesser games, basic instructions wouldn’t matter as much, but in Heavenly Bodies, you’ve got a whole reference manual with detailed illustrations to pore over. This not only helps keep you immersed, it also plays into the puzzle-solving — there’s a certain order to your tasks and specific tools to find and use. It’s super quick to pop open the manual at any time, and the goals are just intuitive enough to feel like you’ve earned your keep. We usually knew what we needed to do next in a general sense, but weren’t always a hundred percent sure how to go about it, so there was breathing room to explore, try things out, and communicate. It’s great puzzle design. Control nitpicks aside, my main hangup has to do with co-op. While Heavenly Bodies lets players separate to an extent, you’re still more or less sharing the same screen real estate. There were instances with some larger/longer rooms where I wish the screen could’ve dynamically split to let me do my own thing, then circle back and sync up. It’s not too offputting as is — the camera will pull back within reason to show both players — but that would’ve helped us play more efficiently. That said, accidentally (and intentionally) getting in your partner’s way can be a big part of the appeal, so the closeness isn’t all bad. Diablo 3: Eternal Collection Free

On that note, I really do think this game shines in co-op — though I wouldn’t consider that to be a caveat for solo players. Just something to consider. The optional challenges and potential for speedruns (including a timer option) help extend its longevity. I should also make it clear that the overall difficulty is nothing like QWOP or Getting Over It; it’s much more of a go-at-your-own-pace puzzle game rather than something you persevere. Even in the frustrating moments when the controls seem to have it out for you, there’s so much to like about Heavenly Bodies. It’s a wonderful concept for a game, it’s impressively polished, and it’s hyper-focused in the best way. It feels like the devs took their time. While it may be a struggle, it’s a fun struggle. A physics-based puzzle solving space jam, this Australian-made jaunt spent most of its run time either impressing or annoying me, often simultaneously. Its particular brand of quirky, emergent gameplay is ripe for streaming and co-op sessions with friends but was often a path to frustration when playing solo. Though brief bouts of contemplative stillness and satisfaction permeated the experience, these were mere mental oases to be rested at briefly before I had to return to focusing on not punting my controller across the room.

Rebindable controls

In Heavenly Bodies, you play as a cosmonaut sent out into the void to perform a litany of tasks across a host of space stations. Your left and right arms are bound to the respective controller sticks, with each trigger controlling your hands and the bumpers offering a limited leg tuck and kick. These are your only means of movement, the rest is up to whatever God you’ve made a pact with and the zero-gravity environments around you. It’s the kind of brilliant simplicity that can be continuously relied upon for engaging and escalating puzzle scenarios. Initially, you’ll need to manoeuvre through small spaces, connecting a stray cable or opening a jammed door, but as the game wears on you’ll be expected to solve bigger problems with the same limited tool kit – two arms, two hands and a whole load of determination. Heavenly Bodies’ take on physics is somewhere between the cartoonish and the realistic, your arms flail wildly but your strength and subsequent impact on the environment seems fairly grounded. The resulting play-feel is odd, producing moments of smooth cause and effect as often as perplexing standstills. Propelling myself by building momentum worked a treat while pulling basic levers occasionally made me want to scream. There is a decent assortment of tasks to complete in each mission, some more intuitive than others but all reasonably digestible. The rub presents itself when those tasks meet your capability as the game’s wacky-wavy-inflatable-arm-flailing-tube physics prevent you from carrying out simple steps. This is ostensibly the appeal of the game, a gulf between intent and outcome to traverse, but playing alone makes this journey maddening at times. Several times over I watched up to five minutes of careful work unravel in seconds, and in the absence of someone to laugh with I just found myself exasperated. That equation also worked in the opposite direction though, plans falling into place as that endorphin rush hits like a truck when you know you’ve got the game’s number. Heavenly Bodies is both of these experiences at once when playing alone and the resulting disparate moods it evokes gave me whiplash. Moment-to-moment navigation of these spaces was consistently serene, however, as the backing ambient track kicked in and I just had to focus on where to grab next. You can find yourself in a nice little flow state this way, Heavenly Bodies giving you all the tools for a rather meditative good time, if only briefly. Heavenly Bodies is ultimately a difficult experience though, and it does its best to offset frustration with accessibility options.

Your celestial duties await

There are three movement styles, Classic, Assisted and Newtonian – essentially standard, easy and nightmare modes. My pride survived approximately two-and-a-half missions before switching to Assisted, in which you can essentially propel yourself in a direction without pushing off from a surface. This is less a commentary on the movement options than the stream of nonsense I was dealing with in the puzzles – I needed to move easier for my own sanity. Classic offers up a nice balancing act between ease of use and challenging, but replaying missions with Newtonian is where I had the most ‘fun’. Its brutal take on realism in zero-g was surprisingly engaging, playing nicely into the movement stuff I enjoyed most during the rest of my playthrough. You can also switch your trigger hands to a toggle instead of hold to give your fingers a rest, display prompts for things that can be grabbed and so on. These were especially useful because Heavenly Bodies’ use of the Dual Sense haptics is indulgent, to say the least. This is largely a compliment; your hands are treated to an array of subtle rattles and forceful resistance, the latter becoming a little tiring during extended sessions. It is wildly immersive though; surfaces feel distinct just as weight in your hands plays on the tension beneath your fingers. A simple art direction is given a crisp coat of paint with subtle film effects to boot. This art is fairly realistic in its depiction of semi-future human space technology, but it retains a morsel of warmth in the details. Rounded edges to the consoles, the glow of the nearby sun and the cute little chubby legs of your cosmonaut are small touches that make the void feel less lonely. Likewise, the game occasionally evokes the inherent horror of its setting, that inky black abyss just outside the thin walls threatening to pull you away from your ship if you forget to attach your harness. All of this while engines hum, actions give little tactical clicks and clacks and a soundtrack that knows when to leave you alone and when to swell back to life. We shouldn’t need to tell you how scary the dangers of things going wrong in zero-g are; the movie Gravity eloquently made that point already. Heavenly Bodies takes itself less seriously, but the peril of floating off into nothingness still looms over an otherwise goofy, intentionally awkward game. Playing alone or with another in local co-op, you’re tasked with fulfilling simple missions rendered more difficult by the absence of gravity. Presented in 2D with a cross-section of each level, your avatar is a ragdoll astronaut afloat in physics-based stages, and you’ll need to get to grips with the controls in order to even move around properly.

Each stick represents an arm, each trigger controls a hand, and beyond tucking in your legs, the default level of control you have ends there. The game’s major hurdle is its first hour or two, in which you’ll need to get used to how it operates. It’ll take some time to learn how to propel yourself in the desired direction, operate simple things like levers, and orient yourself in a no-way-is-up environment. During this phase, it can be an exercise in frustration. However, push past this, and you’ll find a cleverly designed set of challenges that shine best in co-op. While things can quickly spiral if you’re careless, completing objectives feels like a real triumph, and each mission scales things up, providing new ideas along the way. Once you have your head wrapped around it, Heavenly Bodies offers up wonderfully tactile puzzles, and the Dual Sense is really put through its paces. The game is rather short, but it does give you more to do after beating each mission. We should also mention there are three levels of control available, with the easiest allowing you to “swim” through the air (or lack of). While we do think there’s a good time to be had here, be aware you’ll need some patience to find the fun.
