But most of your time will be spent doing anything from making Witch Burning advertisements to carving up cadavers. The opening seconds of this tongue-in-cheek adventure see the playable character wiped out by a car whilst checking his phone – classic mistake. Awaking in a mysterious ‘ye olde’ village setting, you’re informed that you are now the titular Graveyard Keeper. You make a grave and bury the body, and then you sell that meat to be eaten in the village. If only it were that simple! While this is the central loop of Keeper’s tenuously implemented simulation core, it takes its sweet time getting to that point. After the tutorial, you’re given a few tasks: Get a beer for a talking skull named Gerry; clean up the graveyard so you can open a church; acquire a royal stamp so you can sell your man-meat. These “quests” don’t seem like they’d take hours-a-piece to finish, but Graveyard Keeper somehow finds a way to stretch somewhat menial tasks into feature-length fiascos – it revels in artificially lengthening every possible task at hand. For example, to sell your meat you’re going to have to find a royal stamp. You’re given two options: pay 50 silver coins after opening your church or get the stamp from an NPC named Snake after earning 30 friendship points with him. These two branches have their own convoluted paths. Both require you to repair your graveyard to a respectable level so that you can open your church. After opening the church, you can purchase royal services such as the stamp, but during this point in the game, 50 silver coins feel like four bank loans away. You’ll probably want to befriend Snake then; he’s usually sneaking around in your house’s basement at night like any trustworthy person.

Skeletons in the closet

Oh, blast! There’s a collapsed arch in the way, you’re going to have to grind a bit to figure out how to clear it! Oh, and you’ll also have to provide a few sermons at the church – limited to one per in-game week – to earn enough faith so that Snake will believe you’re the Graveyard Keeper. Then you can begin to earn friendship points. No matter what you want to do, the pacing of individual quests is always stretched far too long to make it truly enjoyable. Learning new technologies to further your knowledge of autopsy, crafting, farming, smelting, cooking and more always asks you to grind for ages before you can unlock bare necessities for progressing through the story. It gets better later on, once the game allows you to settle into its core loop, but by then you’ve already experienced too much repetitious graft atop of the main game that it feels like a chore. There’s barely a single quest that doesn’t take multiple hours to finish. It’s a weird fit for Switch, too. Whilst its contemporaries excel at providing a pick-up-and-play experience, jumping in for a quick burst here and there and it’s likely to feel pointless. We’ve tried it, trust us: a quick burst here ends with nothing getting done but a smidgen of resource gathering. Above it all, at least there’s still a staggering degree of charm here. While character’s do audibly spout repetitious (and buggy) grunts and yelps whilst in-game text does the actual talking, the well-written dialogue always manages to shine through. You’ll find yourself adoring characters within the game’s world, you’ll just wish that furthering dialogue with them wasn’t tied to hours of menial grinding or walking back and forth through the same tilesets. they just trigger the dopamine center in my brain and come in somewhere between addiction and guilty pleasure. I most enjoy sim games which I’m able to take on the go, and so despite having logged a frankly embarrassing number of hours on the PC version of Graveyard Keeper, I decided it was time to dig up corpses roots and start my afterlife all over again on the newly released Switch version of the game. I don’t regret it, not even a little. The first thing that you should know is that this is a straight port of the original game; there are no remasters, additions, or remixes to be found here. What you do get is the same, quality, morbidly funny game which we reviewed last year, so this review will focus on the Switch port itself; please read the previous review for more in-depth information about the game itself. With that said, the port is solid; the only real load times occur when you start the game and before entering a new level of the dungeon.

I love sim games

The game never crashed or lagged, and the only real bug I encountered was the occasional glitch while navigating storage trunks, something which will, no doubt, be quickly and easily patched out of the game. Graveyard Keeper looks amazing on the Switch screen, and the pixel art really shines in the small format. The game plays beautifully docked, though for some reason, I found the text to be a little small for comfortable reading. Disappointingly, the Switch port did not take advantage of the Joy-Con’s rumble feature. While that’s not all bad, I really don’t want to think about how they might feel while the Keeper is rummaging around inside the guts of a corpse, it would have been a nice addition to things like mining, chopping trees, fishing, or most importantly, during combat. I always felt the combat in Graveyard Keeper was a little floaty, and something as simple as having the Joy-Cons rumble whenever my sword connects with a monster could have really improved things. Given that days in Graveyard Keeper last all of nine minutes, the Switch really feels like the ideal way to play. It allows me to jump in for one or two in-game days while I’m out and about and kill some free time harvesting resources, planting crops, or digging a grave or two, effectively setting my up for success and making it that much easier to achieve some of the game’s numerous goals The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes 

when I get home and am ready to dedicate an hour or two to this delightful, rather morbid little pixel world. I’ve only spent a few days with Graveyard Keeper on my Switch, but this short time has already proven to be the nail in the coffin, effectively ending my time with the PC version. Once the short introduction story ends, you’ll quickly find yourself in the thick of things. A lot is thrown at you immediately, which can be a bit daunting. Key game mechanics such as meeting villagers, receiving a number of different quests, and being introduced to the plethora of technology trees can make your head spin, but after a few ingame days pass, the flow of things starts to click. Corpses arrive via a talking donkey which need to be tended to and buried in a plot. However these bodies have ratings depending on the deeds they did as a living person, which ultimately affects the rating of your graveyard. Ratings also depends on how quickly the body is buried, as it will slowly decay if left above ground. Of course the goal is to grow your graveyards rating, so all the factors need to be accounted for. This is just a glimpse at how complex systems can get and that’s not even taking into account decorating the grave with tombstones, fences, and the likes which bolster the rating. When not channeling your inner Dampe, a large portion of the day will be spent gathering materials and crafting.

Chopping down trees to harvest wood, searching for nods to gather ore, collecting sand from the beach; all these can then be used to craft a bunch of useful items or components needed for other patterns. Alternatively, there are places in the village to purchase things, but obviously coming at a financial cost, making it always better to craft when possible. Both gathering and crafting comes at a cost as well, however in the form of energy. Sleep restores energy free of cost, but will make time pass, which leads to missing events that happen on specific days. The other option is to eat food which can be cooked or purchased. Managing energy consumption can be a daily struggle, especially when trying to tackle multiple objectives. Throughout the day by completing different tasks, you’ll earn tech points that can be spent in the branching technology trees. Physical labor generates red points, anything involving organic materials rewards you with green points, and the last and easily the most difficult to come by are the blue points, which are earned through knowledge related tasks such as studying. Red and green points are earned early and often which allow you to start unlocking new technology branches. Doing so expands upon what can be crafted and allows more flexibility in earning money and progressing the story. After extensive online research I found the answer, but even then it was a struggle to achieve them. Sadly this tends to be a common theme with Graveyard Keeper. Technology trees and crafting systems are robust and feel rewarding as you get deeper, but more often than not getting to that point requires a lot of time searching online. The constant need to pause and refer to a guide ends up really disrupting the rhythm of gameplay. Initially it may seem that the daily routine would revolve 100% around the graveyard and crafting, but there is plenty more than meets the eye. Expanding your house, farming, combat, and even building up and growing a church are other ways to spend the day. Quests from townsfolk help to push you in different directions, but a lot of the time it felt like a quest would require an item that I would then need to do four or five other things to eventually get. Interacting with characters brings the comedic aspect of the game to light, notably within the dialogue. Talking to certain characters, specifically the donkey was always hilarious, adding another layer to the already fantastic atmosphere. The pixelart is wonderfully done especially with the changing weather which makes familiar areas feel different, particularly when the fog rolls in. Occasional visual glitches crop up where an NPC will disappear when talking to them, but only for a moment before reappearing.

Graveyard Keeper is a strange beast, offering a truly unique spin on the management sim. It’s systems are robust and plentiful, but frankly many are downright confusing. The developers decided to do the player no favors, leaving much of the complexities a mystery without searching online. That is enough to scare some away, but if i You can work any time of day or night as long as you have the energy to keep going. There is a handy energy meter at the top of the screen so you will know when you need to head back to your new home and get some sleep. An odd perk you have as the main character is you don’t really have to eat. If you do eat something you can regain some energy, but I played my character for a couple of in-game weeks and never ate anything, so you won’t die if you go on the breatharian diet. The game control is not too bad; getting around is simple 2D, joystick-controlled stuff. Your character doesn’t have a “run” mode, but you do walk faster than the NPCs. You can talk to some of the NPCs if they are in the mood and learn something about the world in which you find yourself. There are even little jelly monsters and bats you can whack with your sword. Be careful with combat; it takes energy, and if you run out of energy all you can do is try to run—that is, walk quickly away. If you don’t get away the monsters will continue their attacks and you will “die.”
