I haven’t even watched the 2016 reboot or Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It’s already been proven you can’t top the majesty of the original film. Video games are similar. Most games made off the license are okay at best and abysmal at worst. When Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed was announced, I was skeptical. I’m not typically drawn to multi-player-focused games, and anyone who touches my beloved had better have immaculate hands. This time, it’s Illfonic, makers of the Friday the 13th game. They’ve proven themselves before, even if it was sort of overshadowed by Dead by Daylight. So, as I fastened up my positron collider, I kept a stance of cautiously optimistic mixed with immovably scrutinous. The background to Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has Ray and Winston (and maybe Peter, but he doesn’t appear) re-opening the Ghostbusters back in the old firehouse. Since the business only seemed profitable during major, apocalyptic disruptions and real estate in Manhattan is probably even more expensive than it was in the 1980s, this seems like a bad move. Okay, so apparently, there are still a lot of ghosts running around New York, which means we’re more in cartoon territory here. While there’s a storyline that runs as you level up, it’s not terribly interesting. It makes the same mistake that a lot of new Ghostbusters narratives do and brings in previously mentioned subjects and puts the spotlight on them. Of course, that’s hardly the draw here. We’re really here to kick in the doors and be “totally discrete.” You and three other ‘busters are dropped into one of the game’s five environments with the goal of catching the ghost running rampant. The ghost has three opportunities to respawn through rifts hidden in the environment. Ghostbusters can close these rifts either by catching the ghost and forcing it to respawn or by locating a haunted object in the environment and using their proton stream to shut it. If all the rifts are closed, and the ghost finds itself in a trap, the ‘busters win. Before I get into the meat of the game, I’d like to point out that Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed does have some story content. Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, and there are 2 new team members, Catt and Eddy, who are solid additions. The story plays out naturally as you play matches, with new cutscenes and dialogue added in every few games. It’s a fun story, but I’d not recommend anyone buy it just for the story content, as it amounts to about 25 minutes of cutscenes. What’s frustrating is that there is no way to progress offline, which always sucks. While the story isn’t the star here, it still sucks that people can’t get that content without being online. As of the time of writing, neither myself nor other members of the Finger Guns team could play any matches offline at all. The prompt to start a job didn’t exist in the Firehouse. All we could do was walk around, talk to the team and use the target shooting area. IllFonic stated in some documentation sent to us alongside the review code that offline play with bots would be a feature. It’s almost definitely a bug/release issue, and playing offline isn’t the best way to play, but it’s worth noting that currently, the feature doesn’t seem to work. There are several options to tweak, but every facial feature slider starts at 0%, meaning if anything on your character isn’t as small as you want it to be, too bad, you’re stuck with it. You start with a few colour and outfit options, but levelling up your profile or completing specific objectives unlocks new clothing and accessories to dress up your custom Buster. Visually, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has chosen to go for a chunkier, cartoony aesthetic for the characters, sharing a visual similarity to Fortnite, and it works well here. It’s like a middle ground between the IDW comics and the visuals of Extreme Ghostbusters. Characters are always clearly visible due to the game’s brighter colour scheme, with all the different ghost types emitting a glow that makes them easy to spot as you play. All of the ghost designs are great, too. There are 5 classes of ghosts to unlock as you play, and each of them has multiple variants that look and play slightly different while retaining the specific silhouette of their ghost class, so you always know what type of ghost you’re up against. Something Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has absolutely nailed is the sound design.

The franchise rights alone will make us rich

If you’re familiar with the franchise, you’ll immediately recognise the sounds of your gear as you use it or the wind-down after you’ve stopped using your particle thrower. Even the music fits right in with that of the original movie soundtrack. Instead of just using the movie’s score, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed manages to nail the atmospheric sounds of the franchise. I will say that with the default audio mix, the music did drown out some of the actual gameplay sounds, so I bumped it down to about 40%. It was still very much present but a lot less distracting. Spirits Unleashed just isn’t all that satisfying to play—the “combat” doesn’t reward precision or accuracy in any meaningful way, focused entirely on cohesive team play. Well enough, I suppose—us guys, we gotta stick together. But the ceiling for individual play is pretty low: there’s little in the way of equipment, and the Proton Pack upgrades feel indistinguishable from the stock model. It all comes down to preventing the ghost from going through a door after breaking free. As a result, flying solo online is often too tedious to be worthwhile, and the AI is far too simplistic to provide much in the way of a challenge at the moment. Most matches saw my human teams fulfilling every objective except busting said ghost. How much of that is owed to screwy balance vs. quickplay apathy I can’t pin down, but that doesn’t change how frustrating Spirits Unleashed can be sometimes. I was told bustin’ was hardy blue collar work, but there’s no real minute-to-minute urgency here like in Dead by Daylight, with victory and defeat never feeling entirely in my hands. For the ghost, the difficulty lies in trying to balance haunting the location and avoiding the Ghostbusters. By no means is the ghost helpless – in fact, it can attack the Ghostbusters with its basic attack or abilities to build up slime and eventually down a ‘Buster. The ghost also has an ultimate attack that has a long cooldown timer but is devastating against the Ghostbusters. They can also move more freely through the level, which in the right hands is a huge boon. Or against a skilled Ghostbusters team, it can feel like there is no escape once the energy meter runs low.

Light is green; trap is clean

And therein lies the rub with Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. It’s the same issue that faced Friday the 13th and Predator: asymmetrical balance. If the Ghostbusters are a well-coordinated team and the ghost is a novice, they won’t get much of a chance to haunt. Similarly, if the ghost is high level but the Ghostbusters are not coordinated, then it should be able to haunt with relative ease. There’s a fine line for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed to walk but when things go right it is genuinely fun without feeling unfair or players feeling outmatched. (we’re all adults, and everybody has 3 mortgages nowadays). Much to my surprise, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has a pretty great offline mode! While it’ll never beat being able to actively coordinate with live players, the AI teammates were adept enough at capturing ghosts. They did seem to falter at everything else, however. Seeking out ghost rifts (more on these in a bit) and destroying them seemed to be second or third on their to-do list, which often led to me being the lone Ghostbuster to hunt them down. Ghostbusters have a few main goals in any given job: track down and trap the ghost, eliminate all of the Ghost Rifts, and also ensure that the location doesn’t become too haunted.

Tracking down and trapping the ghost is easy enough: follow your PKE meter to the more haunted locations on the map to track down the ghost. Once you find the ghost (could be possessing a chair, so be sure to zap those!), throw down your trap and drag the ghost to its ethereal jail. But wait, there’s more: ghosts can respawn up to three times per round through ghost rifts. Ghost rifts need to be tracked down via the PKE meter, and usually take the form of ancient haunted relics. Once these relics are zapped, the rifts reveal themselves and need to be destroyed via your proton pack. Once all three rifts are destroyed, the ghost can be captured for good. These rifts are randomly thrown throughout the map, and can be picked up by the ghost itself (sort of like a ghostly football) and be re-hidden; so it’s always a good idea to take them out ASAP. This sort of tug-o-war between Ghostbusters and ghosts is a ton of fun and adds a nice amount of nuance to each map. While the Ghostbusters are ultimately trying to capture the ghost, it’s more in their best interest to investigate the map fully and eliminate the ghost’s means of haunting first instead of going after the ghost itself.
