The reality, however, is quite another matter entirely. Despite a description (and a price tag) that would suggest this is a sequel to the infamous Garfield Kart, we’ve got news for you: it’s not. Furious Racing is actually a remaster of the original Garfield Kart, in that the tracks have been given a bit of a lick of paint. You could be looking at a turn ahead of you, thinking of how you’re going to approach it, when the game could ask: “Hold on a minute there, Snappy. You’re getting quite cocky there, sizing up that turn. Have you ever considered the possibility that I might just crash your kart for absolutely no reason? I cannot say, in truth, that I played Garfield Kart Furious Racing. In the plainest terms, I would say I participated in it: I offered my own myopic contribution, alongside millions of others, to form the baroque gestalt of the work as a whole. Because GKFR, you see, is a collaborative effort – directed, certainly, by its developers at Artefacts Studio, but only comprehensible as an ever-changing consensus between the game itself, its players, and its critics. In a sense, then, I am reviewing my own work – for in engaging with GKFR, I became one of its authors. And indeed, in writing as a critic, I expand the work yet further. It’s heartbreaking, really, to resort to a term so crude as “game” to describe Garfield Kart Furious Racing. Could we call it a text, perhaps? Possibly – but one that can only be considered complete in the act of its being engaged with. According to the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics, by observing a phenomenon, we cannot help but change it – and never has this been more true than in the case of Garfield Kart Furious Racing. In the early hours of last Tuesday, as I and a thousand others waited for the 3am activation of our review copies, GKFR existed entirely in potentia: a few million lines of code, disembodied on some server in Northern California, waiting to be defined through our shared experience. Only when that box was opened, could we know if the cat was Garfield. Only when this art was sullied with our own digital hands, could it be real. To think now, that all the genius, all the singular agony of the work, was condensed into just a few million lines of alphanumeric shorthand, is as hard to comprehend as the information required to build a human being archived in the chemical broth at the heart of a cell. Less of a game, then, and more of a gamete – at least for that moment. It would require us, like the mass of cells teeming in a growing zygote, to transcribe genotype into phenotype. And we were ready: a legion of us, fingertips crackling above our keyboards with the electricity of anticipation, as we awaited the crucial hour. Time crawled. But if Garfield Kart Furious Racing says anything unambiguously, it’s that the clock can never be stopped. And indeed, it was not: 3am arrived, the code was activated, and the players began to race. Games about Garfield went unrecognized for years, and the world was a better place. Europe got a series of dreadful 3D platformers, the Wii saw some miserable party games, and there was probably some DS shovelware, too. But in 2013, millennial irony began to pick up in popularity, and so it was that Garfield Kart became the subject of widespread sarcastic, ironic admiration. One glance at the 2013 title’s Steam page reveals a “Very Positive” consensus out of over 4,000 reviews. Now, five years later, Garfield Kart: Furious Racing arrives at a time when Jon Arbuckle drinking canine ejaculate is a bonafide classic meme and Garfield has been reborn into a postmodern icon. In a way, it doesn’t matter what the establishment says about this game – the people have accepted it as art, and so art it is. But I, a simple critic, have a job to do. And that job entails saying that despite surefire improvements over the last entry, Garfield Kart: Furious Racing is nothing more than a basically serviceable kart racer with clear budgetary restraints, lack of content, and some glaring flaws.

You just can’t write an ordinary review of Garfield Kart: Furious Racing , because all the things that are being discussed about this title in the vastness of the Internet simply cannot and must not go unmentioned. On the one hand, there are the Steam Reviews , which didn’t stop at the second part either – there’s talk of the “magnum opus” and that Garfield Kart: Furious Racing would redefine a genre. Of course, these reviews are thought up by the players – but in the end developers and publishers will be happy because it all looks nice at first, especially since some players enjoy running the title for hundreds or even thousands of hours. Then there are the test reports from the press so far, some of which shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Some write a kind of satirical review right away, and others claim that Garfield Kart Furious Racing is the console adaptation of the late debut – which, by the way, is not true. It is a real sequel and a new game. I also had a certain expectation for Garfield Kart: Furious Racing and thought the game would fall into one of two categories: Possibility 1, it’s just a bad kart tracer. Garfield’s character has been giving us good times for many years through different productions that managed to attract many fans of this peculiar cat. However, when we play this title it gives us the feeling that it has been left behind , without doing too much honor to the character. Garfield Kart: Furious Racing’s graphics are simple, hardly worked on and make us feel like we are facing a game from two or three generations ago . In some scenarios, we can see really poor textures , where grids and nets appear instead of walls or trees in the environment. If we look at the karts, we don’t have too much variety in their designs and, although they comply, their movement ends up weighing down this section . The wheels, on many occasions, seem to be fixed, without any movement, while our kart advances . The characters , for their part, are identifiable, yes, but they don’t seem to have much life up in their cars . The sound simply delivers . Many things could be improved: a greater variety of melodies, different engine sounds depending on the kart, a greater number of effects… etc. However, within what it has, none is out of place.

For those not familiar with it, the original Garfield Kart became somewhat infamous for its low quality, with things stepping up a gear when a prominent YouTuber declared it the worst game ever made. To be clear, it wasn’t: it was nowhere near it. At the risk of an “OK boomer” comeback, we’ve been in this game long enough to know there have been plenty of titles over the years that were far worse than Garfield Kart. That’s not so say it was any good, mind you – we tore it a new catflap when it was released on the 3DS – just that its notoriety came as a result of some sizeable exaggeration. On paper, Furious Racing is the same game. You get the same eight racers from the Garfield universe, including the famous feline himself, his tragic owner Jon and other such well-loved characters as Odie, um… Squeak the mouse, and Harry. Look, you shut your ignorant mouth, of course you know who Harry is. It’s Harry! From Garfield! The thing with the cat! Yes, of course, now you know who I mean. You also get the same 16 tracks that were in the first game. None of these were particularly awe-inspiring in the first place, and slightly improving the environment detail doesn’t exactly transform them into Mario Kart contenders. It doesn’t even transform them into Race with Ryan contenders. Consider this: of the 16 tracks available, four of them are desert tracks. That’s a quarter of the entire game, a game based on a cat who famously rarely leaves his house, let alone travels to the chuffing desert. Before we get into the thick of it, however, one more short note on terminology. Just as I am loathe to call Garfield Kart Furious Racing a ‘game’, so too am I unhappy to call us ‘players’. I will do so only in the archaic, theatrical sense of the word. For if physics is one way to codify the business of magic, then theatre is another. The text of a play is a spell: an invocation of power, but one which cannot take full effect until imbued with physicality by performers on a stage.

Our PCs were the stage, and our mouse clicks were the words of power, affecting the will of Garfield Kart Furious Racing in its desire to be told to the world. Even then, were we thespians, using our own talents as fulcra against which to shift the weight of GKFR’s genius? Or just a pantomime mob, amplifying every emotional peak and trough with our animal passion and noise? At times over the four days of the review period (during which, I think, I spent all of 20 hours away from my gaming chair), both felt true. Sometimes, I loved the other racers – they were fellow pilgrims; the only people who could relate to the intensity of what I was experiencing with Garfield Kart Furious Racing, and the only people who could diffuse its pain, by the certain knowledge that they shared it. Other times, I despised them. Wretched and capering, they were beasts; mean apes with funneled lips and grasping hands, boneheaded enough to be treating this as a knockabout competition; a bit of fun. Garfield Kart Furious Racing showed me the best of myself, and the worst of myself.
