It quickly becomes clear that the coolest thing about being a firefighter, aside from saving lives, is actually its greatest weakness. After a lot of faffing, I finally get him onto the stretcher and take him to the hospital. It’s during this drive that I realise he looks familiar. The setting is a small city with a few suburban style areas and a downtown. Flashing Lights is designed to be played via multiplayer, but can be played solo. It appears that there is a wide range of regional support for multiplayer, but it is unclear if the regions mean that there is multiple severs or if they are merely categories to help player pick and start games where the connections will be closer. lashing lights supports controllers and custom bindings for all of the control, including controller axis’. The key remapping function is a little oddly designed, but it works. The graphics options are numerous and by default most of them are turned off. A few of the options don’t look great; the God Rays are way too strong, Depth of Field is a bit too strong, and turning on clouds causes the clouds the form and deform at a rate that looks like it belongs in a supernatural thriller. There are sound volume options for in-game communication, sirens, and overall sound. It is a good idea to turn the siren volume down as it is very load by default. Playing Flashing Light as any of the first responder types is fairly straight forward to start, however, there is no tutorial. The player spawns in and is basically going to learn by trial and error. A police mission to locate a missing person sounds simple and it is, but it doesn’t happen in the way that real police would respond to such a situation. When picking up the radio call and accepting it, there is nobody to talk to at the address or location of the call to get more information. The officer is supposed to drive to the map location and simply run around looking for this missing person. Fire missions are more engaging and feel more fleshed out. There are accidents, structure fires, and laughably, even dumpster fires are common. The firemen also do rescues and can do some first aid. The EMTs (medics) have a wider range of tools to resuscitate people that have stopped breathing or have no pulse. The EMT’s also do patient transports.

They’re all the same guy

Flashing lights is pretty rough around the edges. Multiplayer can be glitchy, with a little bit of jerkiness in the rendering at times. The map design is straight out of old school GTA, where long snaking highways lead to geographically close locations. Many of the roadways are unrealistically narrow, making navigation very difficult. It is very easy to run off the road or over a bridge. The AI cars frequently pop-in right in front of the player, and the level of detail, even at the highest setting, makes for very jarring scene changes. These can range from cars with pizza cutter tires suddenly becoming detailed vehicles to roadways suddenly appearing where it looks like a scrub brush field. The missions are very repetitive, so the replay becomes a bit of a drag after an hour of play as one of the types. There don’t appear to be a lot of players online; keep in mind that Flashing Lights has been in early access since 2018, so it is not a new game. Flashing Lights is recommended on sale, with the caveat that it is a game in development and it may never be totally complete. In this open world, you’ll have the freedom to choose your role and how you play. Unfortunately, you’re not going to find any story in Flashing Lights. This is an open-world sandbox giving you the tools to create your own story or not if you choose. While there may not be any story, there are quite a few roleplaying servers in multiplayer that will give you a chance to make your own story with your friends. The gameplay is where the meat and potatoes of this indie title will be found, with three different jobs to choose from police, firefighter, and medic. You’ll select your outfit and vehicle before you begin. Once selected, you spawn into the world and can set out to try and do some good. You’ll start to receive dispatches that will send you off from here. The player can receive various dispatches for the three jobs, requiring different vehicles and tools. However, dispatchers will only give the player some basic information regarding the situation, including the incident, location, and needed vehicle. On arrival, players must decide how to approach each situation and determine the best outcome.

Help the injured solo

While Flashing Lights offers interesting concepts to allow players the freedom to determine their approach, NPC behaviors at times will hinder decision-making by getting stuck or not moving. Hopefully, these issues will be addressed in a later update of the game as this title is still in development. An open-world for players to decide how to respond to emergencies When working, players usually arrive on the scene and choose how they want to approach the situation. They will have many of the tools that each profession posses. For example, a police officer will have usable handcuffs, a taser, and a handgun on their person to use as necessary. This is the same with the other choosable professions. Multiple tools inside your vehicle add another level of choice to your approach. Completing each of these calls will reward you with experience and reputation. If singleplayer gets a little dull, players can always jump into one of the available multiplayer servers. Servers range from official servers to public player-run servers and private servers, which will all offer a different experience. You can find just some general play where you jump in and take dispatches, but there are several roleplay servers of various levels of seriousness in the community. The multiplayer lobby layout in Flashing Lights has to jump from region to region to find one that has active servers during our review. We found that the east coast region contained the most active service. Flashing Lights utilizes the Unity Engine, offering an expansive world to explore with the various locations where each dispatch occurs. Additionally, players have ample space that facilitates different experiences with each call and allows a lot of room for online players to collaborate and work together. Unfortunately, during our Flashing Lights review, we did run into various bugs. The most significant issue was distance loading. Even when trying different graphics settings, surrounding objects would still load slowly. Of course, Flashing Lights is still in Early Access, so it’s fair to say that many of these issues will be dealt with in the future as optimization improves. You’ll find realistic-sounding vehicles, and even voice chat sounds like it’s coming from a radio. There’s lots of detail in the sound between the effects and the city, but when running through the city lights and sirens, you’re probably going to want to turn your sounds down as they are set very loud by default.

Be an EMS! As an emergency medical specialist, your job lies in keeping members of the public alive, treating patients’ injuries, diagnosis and more. Lifesaving equipment you’ll utilize includes medical kits, stretchers and ambulances. Help the injured solo, or with friends. Team up with fellow players online and divide your team between the three emergency services at will. Race around the open world in various vehicles, to where you are needed, working together to help civilians in accidents or catch a fleeing criminal. There is no story you just take on missions as each service so putting out fires as the fire fighters and arresting people who have done crimes in the city ect.
