Despite the fact that story has always been such a big part of the series, it doesn’t seem that way when you first start up the third game. The new developer has cunningly tried to spice up the different introductions to each level, with single lines of text that explain the story in very broad strokes. But if you don’t have any previous experience with the series, you will find it very difficult to find out what is going on and what your basis is for the many missions. Perhaps to accommodate the new players, no amount of action scenes are spared, and you are quickly thrown straight into your first firefight against enemy soldiers. The communication and cooperation between the enemy soldiers has always been one of the highlights of the series, and fortunately it still is.The constant exchange of commands and status reports between the enemies can certainly sometimes make it sound like you’ve wandered into a special military-horny fan conference, but their efficient cooperation nevertheless results in some exciting battles . F.E.A.R. 3 is a very solid shooter that covers a lot of the right bases

Although it’s a system we’ve mostly seen used in third-person games, it works fine here from first-person, and rarely causes problems. Nor have they been able to resist an upgrade system like the one that has made, for example, the Call of Duty series so popular. Therefore, each level contains a number of challenges, such as beating ten enemies in close combat or shooting twenty enemies from cover. Each solved challenge gives points that are collected in a pool and unlock extra abilities, more ammunition and extra bullet time.  However, there are shards in the joy of action, because the weapons, of which there are not many, are simply far too limp and strangely large and undetailed to look at. Rarely has a shotgun had such a hard time blowing an enemy to pieces, a machine gun so hard to pierce an enemy, and a sniper rifle proven to have so little weight. The bumpy design and inappropriate nature of the zombie enemies, however, is only the beginning of the problems for FEAR 3. As the game progresses, it turns out more and more often that the developer simply did not have the patience or perhaps even the skills to stick to the creepiness. Where Monolith forced itself to resist the temptation of indulging in an action bang around every corner to instead build a tone-heavy atmosphere culminating in creepy scenes, this is not a lesson the new developer has learned. Instead, you are now repeatedly overrun by such original enemies as the living dead with bombs mounted on their stomachs, while weapons and bullets are found in every little corner. With a lame single-player experience, it’s not surprising that it’s the multiplayer components that offer the greatest entertainment. The main story itself can be played with a friend in co-op – one as Point Man, the other as Fettel. In fact, you are also allowed to take control of Fettel even if you choose to play alone, here it just requires that you complete a mission, after which it can be completed again as the telepathic brother

Kill the other players to win, while the others have to take out said enemies

If you want something more competitive instead, you can find it in “Contractions”, where you have to defend buildings against enemy attacks in the best “Assault” style. In “Soul Survivor” it’s all about infecting the other players as a ghost, while “Soul King” requires you to survive hordes of enemies by giving you the ability to take over their bodies. The most fun variant, however, is the perfectly named “F**king Run”, where cooperation and reflexes must ensure that you escape a constantly advancing fog, while enemies and other obstacles constantly stand in your way.  It is hard not to get the feeling that the plans for the third game in the FEAR series have been to make a radically different, more period-typical episode, which unfortunately ends up as the series’ dullest and most misjudged chapter to date. It’s a shame that Day 1 can’t hold on to the creepiness, because in some areas, like a maze of flashing flat screens and a freezer room where slaughtered pigs hang side by side with human victims, it all actually works as you might have hoped. Unfortunately, the rest of the package is drenched in predictable attempts at horror of the kind where the enemy is always behind you – while the story never really gets going. Technically, what is offered here is also far from competent compared to the rest of the genre, and especially for a series that was once at the top of the class on this very point, it is extra disappointing.First, a brief overview of the latest events: In FEAR 3, the Point Man is on the loose again. This time to prevent Mother Alma (the little girl who is actually a grown woman) from giving birth to another telepathically gifted child. Or should he actually save the child? Those who are on the lookout for moments of showers should also look into the tube. FEAR 3 is about as frightening as a butter ride in the Vulkaneifel. Occasionally letting Alma pop up in front of the player in adult or little girl form just isn’t enough anymore. Especially since this mostly happens randomly in FEAR 3, one reason why the good one appears here and there is hardly recognizable. Also, the constant appearance of a disgusting mutant creature that you can’t kill, but that’s constantly messing around in your face, quickly gets on your nerves. By the way, who or what is hidden behind the monster is revealed by the stupid, because repetitive final fight, in which we were repeatedly without ammunition. If this is your first F.E.A.R. game, you’ll need some Wikipedia pages handy, because Day 1 Studios simply does not care. Taking place months after the events of the first game, F.E.A.R. 3 continues the Point Man’s story as he finds himself imprisoned by Armacham and tortured for information. He is rescued by an unlikely accomplice — his cannibal brother Paxton Fettel, who was killed by the Point Man in the first game.

If you’re not with me so far, I wouldn’t recommend jumping into this game, because you’ll be lost for the entirety of the game. Back to the story, it turns out that Fettel’s psychic ties to Alma (scary girl, human test subject, telekinetic rapist) and the Point Man was too strong for him to die, so now he exists as a wraith-like spirit, bound to his brother and harboring his own twisted agenda concerning his brother and Alma’s upcoming baby. Thus the stage is set for a new co-op take on the F.E.A.R. series. It’s clear from the outset that F.E.A.R. 3 is intended as a purely co-op situation. The battles are designed for two players to distract and flank enemies, with odds that can sometimes prove overwhelming for solo combatants. While you can play single-player, you miss out on a vast proportion of the game — the secondary player character, be it Point Man or Fettel, will be removed from gameplay, not even available as an A.I. partner. It’s a strange decision, so be warned that if you choose to go it alone, you won’t get the full game. The Point Man’s style of play remains largely unchanged from previous titles in the series.

As the more corporeal of the two characters, he can access any gun that’s lying around and he can also make use of Reflexes — a fancy way of saying he can slow down time temporarily. Being human, the Point Man offers a more traditional approach to combat. Day 1 Studios did a tremendous job of building upon previous games and adding a new level of speed and intensity to the combat. Although F.E.A.R. 3 is considerably less scary than its predecessors due to the co-op gameplay and an increased level of action, there is still a healthy dose of foreboding atmosphere, and there’s a level of quality in the shooting mechanics and overall presentation that past entries lacked. In many ways, it takes elements of modern military shooters such as Call of Duty and drapes a horror vibe over the framework. The results are quite pleasant to behold. Meanwhile, Fettel is the choice for true sadists. With the former antagonist, players can possess enemies, gaining control of their physical form and being able to essentially fight like the Point Man (sans Reflexes). As well as possession, he can suspend opponents in the air via a ghostly thread, shoot energy projectiles, telekinetically fling grenades, and make unfortunate victims explode.
