Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R is a fun all-ages racing game based on the hit series from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation that is easy to recommend to fans of the series and racing fans. It has easy to pick up controls, three difficulty settings, different gameplay modes to take on, and a full trophy list, and it’s now a Cross-Buy title,  The good: The references and locations were well preserved for people who are fans of the series, has its own uniqueness instead of copying characters and cars, the use of items is well thought out, the AI is well balanced in its difficulty. The bad: Not a lot of replay value, some trial and error when racing various tracks, not all four characters in the tournament is that unique, lacking oomph on items and tracks, paintball on your screen can get annoying. If memory serves, Fast and Furious movie series has an influence in racing games back in the days when Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube came out with the Need for Speed series and Midnight Racing from Rockstar. Then there’s a train wreck with Cruisn’ on the Wii. Putting that aside, this is perhaps the best that you can get on Nintendo Switch. Of course, people like Paul Walker and Van Helsing with Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez, too many to list but the major stars were not in this game. Well there will be references to their actors name but that’s it. Too keep it short, it’s probably smart not to include them as it might waste production time. Instead, it’s really a battle race in what’s called “Missions”, hence the name Spy Racers. Think like James Bond Aston Martin vs Mario Kart on a serious level. You have paintballs, boosters and the cars unique weapon depending on the character you choose and the car they’re driving in. If I had issues is the tracks and the weapons really lacks oomph despite how well balanced the AI is in all difficulties. The worst, even if you’re ahead is the paintball on the screen which is like black oil on the screen in Mario Kart. Well it handles well there, the paintball effect here shouldn’t be used too often or you might have to pay for more controllers you break. Also when you crash, it takes some time before getting back on track as it involves trial and error. Graphically, on the Switch, it looks quite decent. The cars look good and the effects works well. The characters looks ok but I just wish that the graphics doesn’t have to look too simple but at least it runs smoothly.

As for the trophies

The sound side is also good. Considering the way music is used in the Fast and Furious movie series, it’s a no brainer. The voices on the teenagers can be a little hokey but it does the job well. The main womans narration is perhaps the best out of all of them. The replay is decent. You can unlock drivers and the car customizations but it would’ve been more addictive if there is more tracks to drive through (as well as Mirror Mode if you’re still a fan of Mario Kart). Also there’s co-op and multiplayer modes to help complete the package. Despite that, Fast and Furious Spy Racers Rise of Shifter is a good game in its own right. Clearly, it’s not made for teenagers who wants a more violent racing game to put it politely. It’s really made for everyone including kids who is new to the movie series. If you’re looking for a fresh game to play with your friends, this might be worth your time as this racing game is an alternative to Mario Kart or Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Definitive Edition. Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R is a weird goose. It’s a racing game aimed at a young audience, but it isn’t a kart racer. It has you driving cars with moderately well-crafted physics, being heavily focused on drifting in order to turn on sharp corners. At the same time, it is far from a racing sim, because of its colorful aesthetics and the fact that there are items you can use both offensively and defensively. Dead Rising 3 Apocalypse Edition

It reminded me a lot of Blur, but in a less arcadey way. It really marches to the beat of its own drum, and while confusing at first, since I was expecting something easygoing like 3DClouds’ previous racing games, I ended up liking its gameplay loop. Basically, you drive your car through well-designed urban locales, drifting and performing tricks in order to fill up a special meter. Each car has four different kinds of special moves: a frontal shot (takes a fourth of your meter), a trap (half a meter), a boost (three fourths of a meter), and a special attack/boost which is specific to the character you’re using. Essentially, it ditches Mario Kart‘s random item placement in favor of an additional element of strategy, which ended being a LOT better than expected, considering that every single character has a special move that actually doesn’t suck. Everything is surprisingly balanced, with each character driving and attacking in different yet fair ways. I liked the progression system as well, mostly due to how simple it is. You win currency every time you win a race and/or a chapter (essentially a four-race tournament). Use said money to buy skins, music, and new characters at the Yoka Shop. Sounds beyond basic, but considering how convoluted some progressions system have turned into in modern games, I actually appreciate the back-to-basics format adopted by Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R.

The World is Your Track

You also have to unlock new levels by completing previous tournaments, giving you an extra incentive to unlock everything the game has to offer via normal gameplay. It has its issues, but all in all, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R‘s gameplay ended up being pretty good. I have my qualms with it, though, most of them stemming from its presentation, which is something shared with almost every single game published by Outright Games. It is not exactly a visually impressive game, but it does run well enough during races (the framerate is atrocious during cutscenes). Finally, while the soundtrack is not entirely bad, the voice acting sure is. In true 3DClouds fashion, characters simply do not shut up while racing, often uttering annoying one-liners whenever you use a special move or overtake an opponent. It’s loud and poorly mixed. Let’s put it this way: given the franchise’s atrocious track record in the gaming world, the fact that Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R is not only not bad, but actually a pretty good (and even occasionally challenging) action-packed racer is a cause for celebration. It’s not exactly the most newcomer-friendly racer, especially considering its core audience, but if you’re looking for something a bit more challenging than Mario Kart, but still nowhere near as realistic as Forza, you could do a lot worse. Not to mention the fact that, as previously predicted, this is the closest to a spiritual successor to Blur we’ll ever get. First of all, we should be clear what Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R isn’t. This isn’t a story-driven game. If you love the series for its spy games, and the dynamics between the team, then you are going to emerge disappointed. There are some scrappy little cutscenes that – if we’re being honest – could have completely excised without damaging enjoyment at all. And if you want to spend time with the series’ characters, then ditch that notion too. The best you’re getting is a couple of quips and their repeated, annoying chat from the cars themselves. What you are getting is an extremely robust, generous little kart game (in the same way that Blur was a kart game: you are driving realistic-ish cars that can fire missiles and drop mines on each other). Anyone who has played Mario Kart will feel at home and cosy here. There are Missions which act as the game’s campaign, with four lots of four courses available to play. A Quick Race lets you play any track, and Online Multiplayer allows you to race against randoms. The Missions can be played solo or split-screen co-op. There’s some bumpf about you needing to infiltrate SH1FT3R to stop some kind of apocalypse, but it’s so entirely skippable. It’s all the flimsiest of framing for some racing.

Then you get to choose your character – Tony, Layla, Cisco and Echo – and hop into your first race. Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R is a bit of a looker, which surprised us. We did a kind of double-take on the environments and cars in particular, as they were far better than expected. This isn’t Gran Turismo – get close to some of the more boxy walls on the harbour levels to see why – but it’s closer than it had any right to be. There are even moments when we were tempted to screenshot, as we came to the peak of the Ship Graveyard level, for example. Next to surprise us was the handling. The cars feel great: responsive to the degree that you can slalom between opponents or powerslide close to a bollard and feel confident that no shoddy collision detection will deny you. The powerslide itself is also generous: we had our finger hovering over it for most corners, as it both swings the car round well, but also gifts you a generous amount of energy. And the speed is pretty significant. While this is a kids’ game at heart, it’s not afraid to send you hurtling through its courses. As you push through the course, you accumulate energy which can be spent on one of four different abilities. Each one costs incrementally more than the last: there’s a paintball gun, a paintball mine, a boost and the character’s special move, most often a boost with some supplementary effect like a shield or shockwave. Use an ability and the bar goes down again.
