Or you could play as the Papal States, and enforce the laws of the Kingdom of God upon all of the heretic scum. The German state of Brandenburg could create the Kingdom in Prussia, and continue to unite all of Germany under one prince. Towards the end of the game, the United States might rise up in revolt against their oppressors. The game offers many historical and ahistorical possibilities, and the possibilities are endless and completely free-roam. No game is the same as the one before it. Unique events, decisions, and national ideas are hard to come by, and it is harder to ‘roleplay’ a psychopathic renaissance Hitler without unique events and decisions. However, one of the lead developers from Paradox states that a patch including more flavor will be due by the end of the month. This patch may rectify all or the majority of problems that users currently have with Europa Universalis IV. Other complaints from users include that there are a ‘lack of features’ over Europa Universalis 3. In my opinion, this is somewhat true. The base experience still ‘feels’ like Europa Universalis 3. The developers preferred to ‘flip-flop’ old features into new ones of which all changes I am completely fine with. The devs decided to destroy the bad parts of old features, and redesign the features. However, this still leaves us with a feeling of a ‘lack’ of new features, despite the design overhaul. Maybe this is because Paradox Interactive wanted to appeal to long-term fans, but either way I do not feel it it a complete negative. These issues will undoubtedly be rectified in the release of various types of DLC, which will probably happen within the year. Paradox simply wanted to reconfirm all of the elements in EU3 and transfer them to EU4. Other people complain about the game being a Steam exclusive. I do not understand these complaints, because you can actually uninstall Steam after downloading the game and still play EU4. Paradox Interactive does not believe in DRM, and prefers a libertarian approach to their games. The reason Paradox moved to Steam distribution is that Steam was the biggest retailer that Paradox had.

Some people don’t like the fonts in the game, so they download a font mod. Steam workshop is a beauty to use, and it is very easy to mod the game yourself. As an example, I was able to make a parody mod myself in the span of five minutes. All in all, Europa Universalis IV is a fantastic game which has made the majority of the community happy. I founded the United States of America in the year 1760. Well, strictly speaking I forced Spain to do so as a condition of its surrender after its foolish invasion of my French allies. My Russian colonial forces in the New World barely even had to fight, capturing Spanish colonies from Kansas to Guatemala. But my overwhelming success led to difficult choices at the negotiating table; if I were to try to keep all that land, my neighbors would rightfully be wary of my expansionist tendencies. Along the way, I’ve upset the gargantuan Holy Roman Empire, gone to war with the Papal State, conquered Serbia, and inadvertently helped France take over most of Spain. Now I’ve got the vast Ottoman Empire knocking at my door, and I’m about to lose everything. I’m just going to say it, and I think that Europa Universalis IV is one of the best strategy games that I have played ‘out of the box’. It may sound a bit silly after you have read my biases and experiences, but I honestly think that it trumps games like Civilization V, Age of Empires Online, Shogun 2 Total War, and other titles when it comes to fun. I am not comparing the game to any of these titles, because Europa Universalis IV is the flagship of a completely unique strategy genre. I am not just ‘fanboying’ and following Paradox Interactive unquestionably. I believe this game to be one of their most stable releases. Paradox Interactive’s Development Studio has not sacrificed complexity for the sake of simplicity. In Europa Universalis 3, you had many menus and tool tips that were scattered and unorganized. It was very difficult to find information that you wanted, and if you were new to the game, you would be frustrated and would probably quit the game within a few hours. In Europa Universalis IV, they got rid of all of these scattered menus and hidden information. Whenever you hover a mouse over something, the game tells you the relevant statistics about that element 9 times out of 10. This makes the game easier to navigate, but new players and old players like myself are still learning things about the game. I have never stopped learning things in a Paradox Interactive game, pricipally due to how complex the game is. This confidant is the game’s interface, which is representative of how far the studio has come from even newer titles like Crusader Kings II. All of the information you need is presented cleanly, elegantly, and with (mostly) idiot-proof tooltips.

The star of the show is a new, context-sensitive hint system which can explain to you in plain, “I don’t play these games very often” English why your army upkeep is currently costing 10 bajillion gold more than it should, and why something called “Bogomilist Heretics” are a few battles away from taking over your government. All of the menus you need to get to are easy to find—and easy to decode. Every action you need to take has a big, clearly-labeled button. Important information is shown in large, color-coded boxes and pop-ups that can easily be interpreted at a glance: Green is fine, yellow means you might want to take a look at it, and red means you failed your people, and should feel bad. What separates Europa Universalis from most other strategy games is its intense focus on being historical (for example, you can only play on the real-world map). You wouldn’t ever expect a game of Civilization to have a historical outcome—its scope is far too broad—but EU4 makes accurate outcomes seem plausible. Could Russia have, perhaps, focused more on western expansion and less on European conquest, as in my game, and would that have led them to more completely colonize the west coast of North America? Those mild initial divergences from history, with major later effects – my world wars against Spain – are the sort of interesting alternate histories that define Europa Universalis.
