However, when you have an evil villain as a nemesis, things rarely go to plan. This is what you can expect in Dyna Bomb 2. It’s a colourful affair with plenty of collectables, lots of secrets, and oodles of monsters. Developed by 7 Raven Studios and published by Totalconsole, this is an arcade platformer with some strategic elements. What’s more, it can be played solo or locally with a friend. This is great as it enhances its appeal whilst making it a family-friendly title. After their success against Dr. Brutus, Jack and Ela thought they had saved the day. With their confidence brimming and some well-deserved slaps on the back, they decided to take a break. However, as they order some coconut coolers, the nightmare begins again! Dr. Brutus is hellbent on revenge and begins to bomb the holiday resort. Consequently, the two heroes must act to save the day. They grab their armour, bombs, and jet packs and set about thwarting his evil plans. As you can tell, the story isn’t a masterpiece, nor will it win awards for originality. Yet, it is still fun, witty, and works with the genre and theme. You control either of the heroes as you traverse an array of levels and worlds. There are 8 worlds to explore that comprise 9 stages. Furthermore, you have plenty of tasks to do if you are a completionist. Subsequently, it is one title that’ll keep you playing for hours. What makes Dyna Bomb 2 so good is its blend of fast-paced action, resource management, and collectables. Every stage has a set number of monsters, gems, ammo, and secrets. Moreover, each level is timed to add an element of pressure and risk. Now, if you are too slow or you fail to gather/kill everything, it matters not. After all, these goals are aimed at perfectionists and are only essential if you wish to find every secret. I mentioned a tactical layer to the gameplay that comes from the limited ammo mechanic. Consequently, you can’t be trigger-happy as you’ll quickly exhaust your supplies. Instead, you must be mindful and patient while learning your enemy’s moves and capitalising on their weaknesses. Your foes and the bosses comprise a hearty selection of weird and wonderful creations. You’ll encounter armoured beasts, flying foes, and gun-wielding maniacs. Furthermore, the bosses will test your resolve and skills as they repeatedly kick your ass. As such, you must identify their weaknesses and use your powers to destroy them. Concerning special powers, Dyna Bomb 2 has an array of permanent and temporary upgrades to improve the protagonists. You can increase your fuel, add rockets, become a gem magnet, and more.

Dyna Bomb 2 Different levels for each world.

These improvements make the gameplay exponentially easier and are essential to progress. However, they come at a mighty high cost! Subsequently, this element of the game may not appeal to everyone. Sadly, there is a distinct reliance on “grinding” for gems and golden balls. Both of these collectables are used while upgrading your heroes and are therefore essential. Yet, the balance between cost and reward is unfairly skewed. Accordingly, if you wish to perfect or complete a stage, you’ll waste hours saving gems only to lose it all by dying. Luckily, though, this is made much easier in co-op mode. With two of you working towards a common goal, it isn’t so difficult, nor does it feel overwhelming. Dyna Bomb 2 embodies arcade gaming. Thanks to its bright colour palette and in-your-face scenery, it looks amazing. Furthermore, there is a Manga/Anime edge to its aesthetics that aligns wonderfully with the unusual sprites. What was also incredible was the fantastic stage design. With many levels to explore and plenty of convoluted and complex areas to discover, I rarely got bored. The energy and OTT approach continues in the jovial audio. A whacky soundtrack combines loud but fun music with zany sound effects. The result? An often unbearable cacophony of sound that works perfectly. Mostly, Dyna Bomb 2 does a great job with its controls. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series

Essentially, they are responsive, well-considered, and easy to understand. However, the combat element is flawed, as there is no aiming mechanic. Instead, your missiles or bombs follow a set path. Subsequently, this can be frustrating, especially when ammo is scarce to find. Other than this, I liked the limited fuel for the jet pack, and how easy it was to pick up and play. With so many collectables, Dyna Bomb 2 is a busy game. Furthermore, the “perfection” accolade on each level is tough to accomplish. On top of this, there are many secrets to uncover and new suits to unlock. Consequently, it oozes both replay value and longevity. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about Dyna Bomb 2. Yes, it was occasionally irritating, and the “grind” was unreal, but it was still fantastic. However, its concept doesn’t break the mould, nor does it stand out from its peers. Instead, it’s one of those games that is fun without blowing your mind. All in all, it is challenging and enjoyable and I recommend you to buy it here! One of the first games I reviewed this year was the action platformer Dyna Bomb from 7 Raven Studios and suffice to say I wasn’t too impressed with it. Fast forward eight months or so and 7 Raven Studios is back with the follow up Dyna Bomb 2. Is this one just as repetitive as the first or have they improved it to make it worth your time Dyna Bomb 2 is once again an action platformer and on you can play solo or with a friend in local co-op.

A unique boss for each world.

The two playable characters are Jack and Ela who are currently on a tropical vacation. The relaxation doesn’t last though as the evil Dr. Brutus interrupts their vacation and the duo has to set out to stop him. The levels in the game are spread out across eight worlds with each world having eight levels. The gameplay is pretty straightforward as you’ll be platforming your way through the worlds, killing enemies, and finding collectibles. Much like the first game, the level design in Dyna Bomb 2 isn’t anything special to make it stand out from the dozens of other platformers on the market. Another gripe I had from the first game was the lack of enemy variety and while I think the second game is a bit better in this regard, you still end up fighting a lot of the same ones over and over soon enough. These include robotic monkeys, bees, and crabs and they can all cause you to die pretty easily if you aren’t careful. There are no checkpoints in the levels and there is no way to regain lost health during the level either which means you need to be very cautious unless you want to start over. Your means of attacking them includes bombs and missiles while your jetpack is used to get around. Your abilities can also be upgraded using collectibles you pick up but some of the upgrades only last for one level such as ones that let you get more boost out of your jetpack or attract collectibles to yourself. You also only get so much ammo and it isn’t the easiest time aiming your bombs correctly so I found myself wasting shots pretty frequently. Levels give you ratings up to perfect depending on whether you kill all the enemies, beat the level fast enough, and so on so if end up wasting a lot of your ammo you may end up struggling to complete the kill all enemies goal and be forced to restart. Visually the game still has that mobile game look to it despite being priced a bit higher than you would expect. Levels are bright and colorful but much like the level design I just wasn’t impressed with the look at all. The same goes for the music which actually got on my nerves a little. Trophy hunters will at least find an easy Platinum here with 14 trophies in total to collect. If you are in it just for that you won’t even have to beat the whole game to earn them all. Dyna Bomb 2 is an easy to pick up and play platformer but challenging at the same time. I don’t think I can whole heartedly recommend it though as nothing about it stands out from the level design to the visuals and audio. If this was priced similar to games that we get from Ratalaika Games then it would be easier to say go for it but for $15 you can find many other platformers that will bring much more enjoyment Pretty hot on the heels of the first Dyna Bomb, Dyna Bomb 2 is here to try and satisfy your thirst for zooming around and blowing stuff up. It’s here a mere six months after the original was released.

but can it fare better than the previous entry; a game which didn’t entirely impress us Dyna Bomb 2 is a pretty basic platformer, where you can run, jump and hover with your jetpack whilst trying to chuck bombs or fire missiles to take out your enemies. You can play as Jack or Ela, whose holiday is rudely interrupted by the villainous Dr. Brutus and his army of mechanical pests. Their adventure spans eight different worlds, each containing eight levels (along with some secret ones to be unlocked too). You move from one to the next on a world map screen, in a similar style to Donkey Kong Country. Each level contains jewels, power balls and (most importantly) a key to unlock the way forward. You can bag yourself a “perfect” rating for scooping up all of these, along with taking out every baddie and beating the level within the time limit. The level design in Dyna Bomb 2 is very simple, apart from a few hidden secret areas which are obscured by fake walls. There was one which featured a spinning block so instinctively I thought it was some sort of puzzle. After five minutes of aimlessly spinning I realised it was just for show. This is a perfect example of the lack of ideas or ambition in Dyna Bomb 2. Another case in point relates to the range of enemies. You meet a fair few in the first world, but then a very slow trickle of new ones are introduced as you play.

Some even follow you from one biome to the next, such as the squid who can be found in the beach environment and then the jungle one, and can climb trees. I know they’re robots and all, but it just feels odd. In terms of collectibles, rather interestingly you can use your jewels and power balls to purchase temporary and permanent upgrades (respectively) to boost your character’s abilities. For example, to help you through the tricky levels, you can opt for a bubble shield, a magnet to attract loot, or to simply boost your jetpack capacity. More permanent upgrades include the ability to swap from bombs to missiles, which can travel through the solid landscape in each level (for reasons unknown) and prove very useful. The issue is that in Dyna Bomb 2 you’ll die, a lot. The temporary upgrades don’t really help you avoid this, so end up feeling pointless if I’m honest. This is because you can only take a maximum of three hits, and cannot replenish health mid level. As a result constant deaths stunt any sort of rhythm you may try to get into, and the frustration starts to set in. What really compounds this is the fact Dyna Bomb 2 is constantly trying to score a cheap death through methods such as hidden spikes, and enemies lying in wait behind fake scenery. The controls work well enough, but lack finesse and your character often cannot move fast enough to react to some very nippy enemies, including bosses. As well as all of this, hitting your opponents with bombs is infuriatingly inaccurate.

This becomes especially annoying when ammo is scarce, as you can’t really afford to waste it. Missiles are slightly better, as they move in a shallow zig-zag pattern, but aren’t without their issues. As a result, you’ll most likely decide to sack off collecting things and just try to clear the levels as quickly as possible. And given there are initially sixty-four of them to get through, it quickly becomes apparent that due to the lack of ideas in Dyna Bomb 2 there are simply too many levels. Yep, you heard me correctly. The more I played the game and got bogged down in its issues, the less I enjoyed myself. What doesn’t help is the fact you’ll likely bag all the Xbox achievements by the time you have beaten the first boss, eliminating yet another reason to stick around the long haul. Visually, everything looks decidedly average and Dyna Bomb 2 is not without its glitches. At one point I got stuck in the pause menu meaning I had to reboot the game as every time I tried to leave and come back, I wound up in exactly the same place. There was another point where I would randomly take damage (despite being nowhere near any enemies) and die. Not only this but the text translation is a bit iffy too, especially with plurals. But wait, Dyna Bomb 2 features cooperative play. You may be thinking this improves the outlook on things. Wrong. Somehow, co-op play is even less enjoyable. This is because some rather odd choices have been made. If it wasn’t frustrating enough in single player, when playing with a friend you share both bombs and health, making things even more difficult.  Bendy and the Ink Machine
