But make no mistake, those scores matter, and behind that beguiling simplicity is a surprisingly challenging puzzle game. It works like this. You place tiles one at a time, rotating them and connecting them to other tiles, trying to match the things you see on them: rivers, trees, houses, rails and fields. And if you can match a certain number of them, specified by a kind of quest tile, you will get a green tick, a xylophonic “pling!” of success, and – most importantly – more tiles. Each tile you place, depending on how you place it, scores you more points, so the more tiles you have to place, the more points you will earn. Simple. Because inevitably, in every attempt, a time comes when you turn to your pile of tiles, full of hope, only to find they have miraculously diminished while you were looking elsewhere, and with a pang of dread, realise it’s game over: you don’t have the pieces you need to finish any more quests. If I connect it to what I’ve already built, I’ll fail the quest because there are too many water pieces attached, and I’ll miss out on the points and the new tiles as a result.

And sometimes: sometimes I wonder who’s really in charge, me or the game? Am I determining the shape of what I build or is the game surreptitiously leading me? The skill comes in finding ways to pre-emptively build while keeping all of your options open, because you never know which way it’s going to go. Sometimes the tiles fall in your favour, sometimes they don’t, and you need to be prepared for every eventuality. It’s harder than it looks! Dorfromantik is hard. And improving at it is a skill long accrued. But that journey of accruing it: that’s the game, and it’s as pleasant and relaxing, and satisfying, as any I’ve played. Dorfromantik is sunshine on the screen. To spend an afternoon in its company, unhurriedly placing tiles down with a soft “plonk!”, while the gentle sounds of a countryside chirrup around you, is to be filled with calm. That a game this approachable can, behind that exterior, also provide such a deep and prolonged challenge is a marvel to me. It is elegance manifested. Dorfromantik is a joy. Dorfromantik is a cute little title that brings an unusual calming effect and is a very specific experience. “Dorf” means village in German, which is exactly what you will be building here. After a long Early Access period, this game has finally received the 1.0 version, although you should be careful because even though it is a great experience, for some this will be a double-edged sword, and here is an explanation and why. Dorfromantik is a game of placing hexagonal tiles decorated with landscape segments that you will design and assemble. This countryside made up of hexagons contains a couple of different types, so-called “biomes”, in the form of forests, houses, meadows, grain fields, as well as water bodies. It is up to you to reach as many points as possible with a limited number of those fields, connecting various combinations and along the way creating a relaxing landscape that can really be a paradise for the eyes. Of course, these combinations involve connecting the same substrates at the ends of the hexagonal fields, resulting in an aesthetically more beautiful landscape, with additional points. Added to all this are the tasks that the game will give you in the form of connecting a certain number of trees, houses and fields, with variations in the form of an exact number, up to the minimum number of the same biome that needs to be transferred. This adds some variation to the different transitions you’ll play, chasing that higher score, but through transitions you’ll also unlock new skins for existing fields, adding variety and variation to your countryside. Unfortunately, unlocking these fields does not change the gameplay in any sense in the form of new biome types and the like, but only serves as a motivator for more variety.

In addition to the classic, Dorfromantik also has several different game modes, in the form of hard mode, which will give you fewer tasks and requiring better planning, fast mode for a shorter game, as well as creative where you can change the current field assigned to you for any other. This is also what I mentioned at the beginning of the text, because Dorfromantik is exactly what you expect from it and not a bit more than that, so if you are not one of those players who likes to chase the highest score or some of the longer challenges in the form of achievement- and, you won’t be delighted with this game for a long time. However, the relaxing atmosphere of Dorfromantik consists in its audio-visual design. Through pastel environments with relaxing music, this game is a true holiday for all the senses, not demanding too much from the player in terms of strategy, but perfectly striking that balance where it is interactive enough to be interesting. The variety of fields increases with new skins as you play, and the design team should really be commended for the vibrancy of them, with enough movement on each to make your countryside look like a place with life. The animations of all the fields are very satisfying, while the sound effects of cracking and nature are there again to delight the sense of hearing in an unusually soothing way. As for bugs and optimization, there are almost no graphical glitches, while the rare ones that can occur in very specific scenarios are almost imperceptible. Although Dorfromantik may not take you many hours if you are not a passionate raider of the highest score, in this time after an exhausting day at work or school, it is sometimes necessary to let your brain graze around your little German village. When I first started looking into the gorgeous top-down puzzle game Dorfromantik, I wasn’t sure what to expect as its unique name doesn’t give much away, at least at first glance. Digging deeper, I learned that Dorfromantik is actually German for “village romanticization” and having sunk an extensive amount of time into playing it, I can safely say this is a fantastic description of what the game is all about. In Dorfromantik, you get to decide where the sprawling forests go and how far they sprawl, the way the rivers wind through open valleys, and the spots where you want colorful wheat and serene windmills to reside. Of course, there’s more to the game than tile placement alone, and it’s here where Dorfromantik shines bright thanks to how well everything is incorporated from design elements to quests and missions to the way points are tallied. Arguably the most appealing aspect of Dorfromantik is the satisfaction you get from efficiently placing an assortment of hexagonal tiles onto the board and seeing your cozy little village emerge and expand. Unlike games with similar “village creation” ideas like Townscaper, tile placement in Dorfromantik is something that needs to be carefully and strategically planned out in order to make the most out of each round. The game has a clear set of rules and structure in place, with the best spots to place tiles being ones where the edges of the tile appear all white with no red edges. More specifically, you’ll want to connect the tile’s edges to the edges of tiles with similar terrain types. When you’re new to the game, it’s rare you’ll be able to place multiple tiles where all six edges match as it’s easy to accidentally box yourself in terrain-wise as the game progresses, but when it happens, it’s incredibly satisfying. And, as previously mentioned, it’s also worth a lot of points, making it well worth your while to learn how to place as many tiles as perfectly as possible. The game has an informative tutorial that you can play and replay at any time, but in my opinion, the best way to learn the game is to jump in and start playing and experimenting on your own. As for the sound design, the game is a treat for the ears with serene background music, chirping birds, and fun, charming noises that compliment each move that you make whether you’re placing a tile, undoing a previous move, or moving on to a brand new game. Everything meshes together seamlessly to create a living, breathing environment. Dorfromantik isn’t solely about connecting similar terrain types together for aesthetic purposes as the game gives you missions and objectives to complete, like placing a certain number of houses down next to each other. By placing tiles and completing missions, you’ll earn points. The more points you earn during a game, the better.

Ideally, you’ll want to consider the game’s missions ahead of time — before you place your first tile — and build your map out with different areas set up. Not only in terms of houses, but forest and wheat areas, along with rivers and railroad tracks as well. Some missions can require a lot of the same terrain type, especially forests. However, some also require a smaller number of terrain tiles which can surprise you mid-game if you aren’t prepared, thus making it worthwhile to have more than one area set up for mission completion. For me, I like to have at least two of everything set up in different areas of the map. For example, I’ll have a large village area with houses that I expand on to meet larger goals dealt out mid to late-game, and a smaller village with fewer houses and a lot of room nearby to expand and add more. Outside of specific missions related to terrain, there are two main objectives to focus on in Dorfromantik which include “plus quests” where you connect a set number of matching terrain tiles, but can exceed that number, and “exact quests” where you need to connect the exact number and cannot exceed it. Completing a mission or quest will earn you 100 points, and then when you complete a mission a flag will pop up offering a secondary mission to close off that area (making it so no additional terrain of the same type can be placed); closing a flag will earn you 50 points.
