DiRT Rally Free Download Unfitgirl Dirt Rally is more than just the best Codemasters rally game to date; it’s arguably the best racing game Codemasters has produced in at least a decade. Perhaps ever. It’s certainly the best crack at a hard-core rally game since 2004’s heavily-worshiped Richard Burns Rally from Warthog Games. It’s brilliant. Dirt Rally sheds the showmanship of past instalments and shifts the series back to pure, unforgiving rallying. There’s no rewind ability and no quarter given by the game’s opponents. Dirt Rally doesn’t care if you’re too slow. It’s not going to give you a pat on the bum and a free ride to first place if you can’t keep up. To rule Dirt Rally you need to be fast, you need to be focused, and you need to be fearless. When I began playing Dirt Rally I simply wasn’t quick enough. I was overly cautious and still coming to grips with the handling. I was losing time on every sector. At best I was scraping into top four finishes. At worst I was spearing off stages and suffering huge time penalties that sent me plummeting down the timesheets. The steep learning curve may prove frustrating for some players; the deliberate lack of Codemasters’ signature ‘Flashback’ crutch is an important way of punishing mistakes and placing realistic pressure on players but the lack of any guided, rally school training facility may alienate less-experienced users. Codemasters has added a wad of video tutorials to Dirt Rally alongside the console release, however, and each one goes in-depth with a range of rally driving techniques. But it should begin to click. I soon began to better understand the limits of my car and just how close it could be pushed to the edge. I tried being slightly more experimental with my set-ups, seeking to eek a few more tenths from the clock. As my comprehension of the pace notes developed I became more aggressive in corners, attacking them with increasing confidence, braking later (or not at all), turning in harder, and getting back on the power quicker. Blood, Sweat, and Gears Dirt Rally is rewarding precisely because it makes you work so hard to get results. I vividly remember my first stage win in Dirt Rally because it took me plenty of practice (and a properly blistering run) to earn it. It’s these moments where Dirt Rally is at its most thrilling, fractions of a second ahead of the pack at the last time check, hurtling down a narrow forest corridor, carving around gravel bends, and keenly aware that losing my nerve now will see me slip behind. Dirt Rally’s wheel controls are very satisfying and the force feedback feels drastically better than it did when it debuted in Steam Early Access. I’m playing on a Thrustmaster TX (using the optional TH8A shifter in analogue mode as a handbrake) and the constant wrestle is a huge amount of fun.

ICONIC RALLY CARS

That said, Codemasters hasn’t ignored gamers who aren’t in a position to splurge on a racing wheel; I also played it using an Xbox One controller and found it more than capable of taming Dirt Rally’s demanding racing. The joypad controls feel refined and responsive and can be further massaged to suit individual preferences by honing the controller sensitivity and linearity settings (on PS4 I found myself knocking the sensitivity down and the linearity up from their default settings). In any case, the handling is fantastic and the feel of balancing a car on the very limit of adhesion (and, in many cases, well beyond it) is tremendously translated. It’s a great looking game too. The vehicles themselves are far more detailed than those in Codemasters’ Grid Autosport (complete with authentic cabins) and the stage design is excellent (with intimate, tree-lined sections opening up into vast vistas). I love the small details too, from the way new mud is plastered over dried mud, to the occasions you’ll spot camera drones darting from behind shrubs to capture a great angle of you shredding up a corner. And the water splash effects? Magnificent.Better still is the sound, which I honestly can’t fault. Exhaust notes are a violent symphony of snarls, crackles, and pops. Dirt Rally really nails everything, from the whine of a turbo, or the squeal of protesting brakes. Tokyo School Life

The pace notes too have an incredibly authentic beat to them, feeling unique to each stage rather than a cut and pasted barrage of commands lifted from a virtual soundboard. True Grit There are over 40 cars available, ranging from the 1960s classics to today’s competitors. Aside from a few obvious exceptions Dirt Rally covers most of the sport’s most iconic vehicles. It’s quite a task getting to grips with all of them, too. An antique like the Mini Cooper S is quite forgiving (incredibly light and front wheel drive it claws its way through corners) but it’s no rocket and demands you keep your momentum up and maintain as much speed as possible. On the other hand, Dirt Rally’s modern RallyX cars (with around twice the horsepower of a current WRC car) accelerate like Sidewinder missiles, squatting down on their rear springs as they surge to speeds that will leave your spleen in a different postcode. There’s a great deal of variety in the rally locations, ranging from the huge jumps and high speed gravel straights of Finland (easily my favourite location) to the incredibly rough gravel farm tracks of Greece, and from the lush, green countryside of Germany to the icy roads of Sweden, with its stages carved through snow drifts. Dirt Rally’s treatment of snow in particular is excellent; rather than bouncing off it like a solid wall cars will plough through chunks of it as they graze the banks, sending plumes of white powder into the air.

OFFICIAL FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CONTENT

In addition to the rally locations there’s also Colorado’s famous Pikes Peak hillclimb course, plus several dedicated RallyX tracks (which provide the game with head-to-head multiplayer). I’ve had a huge amount of fun with the RallyX courses; I really enjoy the format and the strategy involved with deciding when to take the compulsory ‘Joker Lap’ (the circuits all contain one slightly longer detour that all drivers must take once during the race). The racing is entertainingly aggressive and the AI tenacious. It’s up to players what you choose to primarily focus on during Dirt Rally’s career mode (or in what order you want to tackle these event types) but you’ll need to actually spend your own in-game winnings on the cars you want in order to do so, and this can be a slog. Personally I find Dirt Rally’s career mode suffers as a result of this; I’d expect the driver-for-hire model found in the likes of Grid Autosport or Project CARS would be a better fit for Dirt Rally than the grind-for-cash, collect ’em up approach of games like Gran Turismo. 0-100km/h in two seconds? Sure, why not? Nowadays games appear almost afraid of presenting you with a challenge. High production values, big budgets and the desire to please all types of gamers, mean making a game difficult is often last on the list of objectives. Not so with Dirt Rally. This is a game which has depth in difficulty, not in content. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist

So perfected is the physics engine and the challenge it presents, that the only way to truly succeed is with practice. At times, Dirt Rally excels. The sound design in particular is excellent, as is the wide variety of cars on offer. The actual career mode is pretty stripped back and some might find the lack of detail on certain stages a little disappointing, but ultimately, the challenge of Dirt Rally should keep you coming back for more. Dirt Rally takes a look at virtually every echelon and era of rally driving, from iconic Group B cars, to monstrous Pikes peak runners. Things kick off with a choice of either a classic Escort or Mini, both set on a dusty number of stages in Greece. It acts as a gentle introduction into the world of Dirt Rally while the game installs, after which the rest of content for the game becomes available. You’ve got a choice of career modes, which see you gradually work your way up through the ages up to modern rally cars and onto Pikes Peak. Progression is governed by the cost involved in buying cars, meaning you have to start off in the slower stuff. This is a good thing, because Dirt Rally is tough, really, really tough. We didn’t start taking victories in stages until we’d spent a lengthy amount of time practicing. Such is the difference in handling between individual vehicles that we effectively had to re-learn how to drive each one, making for a further challenge whenever we jumped up a class.

RALLY CHAMPIONSHIPS

A lot of the time you’re also battling against the elements, with snow and rain seriously altering the way that a car behaves. Then you have different surfaces to play with, which even further adds to the challenge. Those keen to get the most out of their car can look at the surfaces involved in a stage and have their mechanic set it up accordingly. On top of this, the more time you spend driving a car, the more upgrades are developed for it. Lastly, any vehicle damage is carried over, with a finite amount of time issued between stages to allow you to repair your car. Where Dirt Rally’s gameplay is at its best is when you start perfecting individual stages in specific cars. There’s nuance and balance to the vehicles that isn’t really present in modern off-road racing games. It means you can start to chip away at stage times, learning where you can brake later and even understanding where undulations and bumps might knock your car off line. It all adds up to give a hugely rewarding experience. It’s worth noting too, that while Dirt Rally is great using a PS4 or Xbox controller, it’s most definitely better with a steering wheel. The audio in Dirt Rally really does deserve special mention. Not only is it some of the best we’ve heard in a racing game, it serves real purpose, with the co-driver almost perfectly matching his pace notes up with a stage. Tormented Souls Switch NSP

Played with a set of headphones, you can pick up all the small pieces of gravel hitting the underside of the car, or the squeak of brakes, or even cracks and pops when you lift off. Crucially, none of the cars have that tinny almost robotic sounding audio that plagues a lot of car games. As for the co-driver, never does he sound pre-recorded or lacking in dynamism. The faster you go, the quicker and louder he talks, while slow runs and mistakes will be matched with equal intonation. You also get audio nods to damage done to the car, which can be useful if you’re not quite sure exactly why it is behaving how it is. We’ve got a full in-depth review of Dirt Rally on PC over on the next page, but here we’re looking at the PS4 version of the game. While it definitely can’t come close to the production values of the likes of a Gran Turismo or Forza title, there is a lot of visual flourishes that impress with Dirt Rally. Interior details are particularly good, with moving dials, shift lights and gear changes. At night, in the rain, Dirty Rally really comes alive. Some of the stages lack detail, so the closed-in headlight-lit view out the front of your car is definitely where Dirt is at its best. There have always been racing games that sell themselves on numbers. The dozens of circuits, the vast atlases of exotic locations, the garages crammed with authentically detailed vehicles.

Other titles, meanwhile, push their glitzier production values; the lush menu systems, the licensed soundtracks, the trackside pizazz. The excellence of Dirt Rally, though, lies not in breadth, but in depth. The latest Codemasters racer can be traced back through a lineage that begins with 1998’s acclaimed Colin McRae Rally, and which diverted less successfully into the not-so-serious Dirt series. This latest generation represents a complete rebuild for the bloodline. First appearing as an early-access title on Steam 12 months ago, the game has subsequently evolved alongside input from players (the force feedback system has been fundamentally revamped, for instance) yet the development team’s brief to prioritise the driving experience above all hasn’t altered. That determination to deliver the most convincing example of digital rallying sees Dirt Rally cut a totally fresh set of tyre tracks across the technological gravel. None of the game’s ancestors – or indeed contemporaries – can get close to its handling model. Rally veers into high-end simulation territory with the grace and exquisite assurance of a young Juha Kankkunen. It is a similar confidence, underpinned by the desire to improve through considerable practice, that you’ll need to get the best out of Dirt. The soberness of the in-game menus, which highlight the rally, hillclimb, and rallycross categories available for play, point to the challenge in store
