Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition Free Download Unfitgirl “Despite its problems, I was compelled onward in my quest with Death because Darksiders 2 is simply a fun game. The RPG elements and to-the-point action all make for some solid gaming, glitches and all. It’s a shame so many glaring issues hold such an ambitious endeavor back from the greatness its developers were clearly aiming for. Still, if you love action adventure games, it’s certainly worth checking out – but don’t expect it to rival the masterpieces it will inevitably call to mind.” Three years after its initial release, developer Vigil’s dark, massive, Zelda-like is back on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition. This current-gen remaster takes all of the puzzles, exploration, and loot-crazy action of the original game, packs in a wealth of DLC, and improves the whole package while running at 1080p, making it the best version of the game. That said, it’s not necessarily worth revisiting for those who’ve already completed Death’s journey. Darksiders 2’s kitchen-sink approach to gameplay and mechanics mostly holds up well. The combat is still very much inspired by God of War’s light, heavy, and airborne attacks, and slashing my way through masses of creatures feels nice and responsive. The inclusion of all of the DLC is a nice bonus, even if most of it is just a handful of new weapons and armor to add to your pile of hundreds that you’ll gather throughout the loot-heavy adventure. Traversing across the colorful world on horseback and grabbing dozens of quests from a slew of fantasy tropes creates an effective, if not entirely inspired flow that makes the adventure feel like a single-player MMORPG. While the visual improvements don’t change the fact that the story is pretty dumb and relies a bit too heavily on the teenage angst of Death and his brothers, the varied environments make exploration an enjoyable experience, especially when you get into any of the many fantastic dungeons. Dungeons unfold in interesting, satisfying ways. Yes, the dungeons are clearly inspired by The Legend of Zelda’s, but they unfold in interesting, satisfying ways. You solve smart puzzles that require paying attention to your surroundings, find keys through exploration, acquire a new weapon or tool that rewards you with a great sense of progression, then use that to ultimately slay a final boss. That being said, there’s little here to make me want to take a second dip in the 30-hour adventure, so the Deathinitive Edition caters more to people who missed out on the game back in 2012.I’ve always been enthralled by mythology. I’m into Roman, Greek and Norse to name a few. Given that I’ve always been drawn to the Darksiders game franchise but never got a chance to play any of them. To add insult to injury I’m a big comic book fan of both Marvel, DC, and Independents. I’ve always loved Joe Madureira’s art.

CHALLENGING BUT NOT FRUSTRATING

Joe is a comic book writer/artist and game developer. Joe is best known for his work on Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men and his own comic book, gone game, in Battle Chasers. Also, Joe does the artwork for the Darksiders franchise. So why haven’t I tried these games sooner? Welcome to our Nintendo Switch review of THQ Nordic‘s Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition! Darksiders II is obviously the second entry in the Darksiders game series. A third has already been released and an ARPG version (Darksiders Genesis) currently in development. The Darksiders series revolves around the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The first Darksiders featured War as a playable character who pissed off some powerful “people”. In this sequel, you’ll find yourself taking on the mantle of Death who’s trying to redeem his brother, War, the horseman blamed for prematurely starting the Apocalypse in Darksiders I. Darksiders II is through and through an action platformer RPG. Death is an agile and nimble character who is able to scale walls, jump from one wall to another, hang on poles, and all sorts of other acrobatic stuff. A lot of the action is based around environment puzzles, meaning how to get from one area to another. Thankfully controls and animations are responsive, the trick is figuring out where the next hotspot is that Death can grab or scale onto. Sniper Ghost Warrior 2

Death has a lot of flexibility in what kind of weapons he can use. You can equip faster dual wield type of weapons and use those with the Y button. And slower two-handed weapons can be used with the X button. Each type of weapon also has its own combos for devastating attacks. Each has some cool animations and combos. There is a lock on enemy button as well along with a dodge button for timely evasion. Combat feels crisp whether with the joy-cons or a separate controller. In battles, you’ll use the joysticks to pivot the camera around and to get the best kiting position. At it’s core Darksiders II is a full-fledged RPG. You’ll level up and be able to assign skill points as well as buy/learn new moves. New skills can be used directly from a radial menu or be assigned to hotkeys, mostly L + A, L + B, etc. There are plenty of loot drops, buffs, an occasional chest and changing armor actually affects your look. Boss battles are epic and a lot of them are encased in some nice cutscenes with professional voice-overs. Several weapons can be dual-wielded and there’s access to upgradable armor that is attainable. You’ll also be granted a mount, Despair, right away that’s a cool looking nightmarish horse. I’d always heard the difficulty level of Darksiders compared to Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Never having played those games yet I can’t say if that’s true. I did find Darksiders II challenging as an action RPG but not to the point of being frustrated.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

A lot of the challenge for me was determining which environmental path to take and how. Especially with a camera that won’t always swing the way I’d like it to. Of course, boss battles are challenging as there are a lot of button combos that could help you end a battle sooner. In that regard, the game seemed to be somewhat forgiving. But of course, I was playing on Normal difficulty mode. Given the nature of the Nintendo Switch achievements are sadly missed. There’s also the gut reaction to do some exploring. Why these aren’t overwhelming abundant there are some things like coins and such that can be found by going off the beaten path. There’s something to be said for how the Switch became the go-to console for remasters; titles that have already seen the light elsewhere and are getting a new lease of life thanks to Nintendo’s console. It’s something to be celebrated when a port appears as if from nowhere, nearly four years after its initial release, and Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition is one such port; it launched way back in 2015 with the ‘improved visuals’ and ‘better lighting’ that its subtitle hints at, much to the delight of those waiting patiently for Darksiders III to finally arrive. Four years later, and Darksiders III has been and gone, so of course the time is right for the Switch to get a port of its predecessor. Fortunately, there’s plenty to enjoy and those who have been awaiting this release will be more than satisfied. Snowrunner

Darksiders II puts you in the boots of Death, a stroppy emo-manchild who appears to have never grown out of his rebellious Pantera phase. His rather entertaining cockiness neatly counterbalances the game’s more melodramatic moments, and it’s never not fun to pay witness to comedic quips from one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Death is also extremely powerful, and it’s not long until you discover just how much trouble you’re in if you cross his path. Wielding a pair of Scythes that look and feel about as cool as you would expect, the combat throughout Darksiders II is perhaps its strongest asset; it never becomes tiresome as Death picks up a swathe of new abilities throughout the campaign. Trying them out for the first time on unsuspecting enemies is a complete and utter joy. Tight gameplay has been a staple of the series since it began and thankfully Darksiders II hasn’t lost any of that particular magic. In comparison to the original 2012 Wii U launch release, this Deathinitive Edition feels both smoother and faster. Death has a fair amount of ground to explore and when you’re not on the back of your trusty steed Despair – which you can summon in open areas as if from nowhere – you’ll be parkouring your way around dungeons, castles and fantastical ruins, all of which look pretty nice. The inspirations of other titles run heavily throughout Darksiders II, and it would be somewhat foolish to proclaim this isn’t an amalgamation of the likes of Uncharted, Zelda and God of War, all wrapped up in one dark fantasy package.

THE GAMEPLAY

Leaning heavily into their exploration aspects without feeling like a carbon copy, the game’s levels feel vast and open, even though there’s only really one way to find your way through. Thankfully, your crow companion Dust is on hand to point you towards areas of interest if you’re finding it tricky to work out where to go next. Away from the dungeons, he has a rather helpful habit of discovering treasure chests, so be sure to keep an eye on his movements. Fortunately, there are enough puzzles buried in the dungeons keep the brain engaged – particularly near the end – as you attempt to navigate your way to the next dungeon room. Exploration is most always rewarded with either enemies to fight or chests to open, each subsequently offering some kind of loot or upgrade to your armour, clothing or weaponry. The game’s narrative runs parallel to the original Darksiders. Death has taken it upon himself to balance the universe, the ultimate goal being to restore humanity and clear his brother War of his crimes after trapping the souls of their Nephilim brethren in an amulet. In order to return humanity to life, he must travel to the Tree of Life by order of the Crow father. Safe to say, unless you’re fully invested in Darksiders lore, the story offers little more than tying the path you take through the dungeons together. You meet a smorgasbord of characters along the way, none of which are particularly memorable or stand out for any discernible reason. Spaceflight Simulator

Fortunately, Death is all the company you need – a sentence that makes complete sense in the context of Darksiders II. From a technical standpoint, port developer Vigil Games has done its utmost to squeeze a rather large open world experience into a Switch cartridge. Visually, it’s an impressive showcase of the Vigil’s obvious talent, as the ‘Deathinitive’ upgrades – namely the lighting and the crisper visuals – are all here, present and correct. This is a handsome game, and the unique vision of Joe Mad’s creative direction bursts off the screen. Due to the shiny upgrades that came along with the Deathinitive Edition elsewhere, the Switch has had to take a little bit of a step down in terms of fidelity – yet it would seem this version has come off lightly in that regard, particularly when it comes to the near-infamous framerate issues which were a major issue of the original launch. This vast open landscape looks terrific in handheld mode, while playing docked on a bigger screen means you naturally see the game’s age a little clearer; still, there’s nothing that would suggest the Switch is holding Darksiders II back or lagging behind its previously-released counterparts. Having said that, the camera can still be a pain when you’re traversing across walls and broken pillars to navigate yourself over a lava pit; it remains firmly on you rather than your destination, which perhaps can be chalked down to the fact that the core mechanics are now seven-years-old.

It’s hardly a dealbreaker and requires little more than moving the camera to your desired location – though, when you’re in the middle of a time-sensitive puzzle, it can be very frustrating. Still, in combat any camera issues are immediately purged thanks to the game’s brilliant lock-on system. As you’re surrounded by those foolish enough to think they can take you down, a quick flick of the right thumbstick is all it takes you have your attention turned. This Deathinitive Edition naturally comes packaged with the three previously-released DLC expansion packs, namely Abyssal Forge, Argul’s Tomb and The Demon Lord Belial. Offering several hours extra on top of the already impressively stacked campaign, they round up to around thirty hours of Darksiders content to take with you wherever you go. Darksiders 2 isn’t a horribly long game, around 25 to 30 hours, and yet it does still feel as if its dragging on for a bit too long. While that core loop is fun, it rarely shakes things up, causing it to feel rather stale by journey’s end. Dungeons are excellently designed and there are a lot of them. Each world is filled with multiple main questline dungeons along with optional dungeons that generally tie into side quests. Each world feels larger and more open than those found in the original. Unfortunately, this is also where the Switch version runs into problems.
