This is just fine, because Commandos 3 was “just fine”, it would need a remake not a remaster to beat 2 and 1. And of course having normal hotkey / binding support, it was perplexing how unplayable this was back in the day. Just like with 2 the “HD” really just means easy support for 16:9 in the modern day and at good frame rates (unlike 2, that had awful performance issues, nevermind bugs crashes and what not), and 3 needed it unlike 2 as people barely managed to make it work. Another thing to note is just like 2 the subtitles are a bit of a joke 🙂 but hey, at least the underage crypto n@zi worshippers have their swastikas in the game, that’s what matters /s. There one new feature called “rookie mode”, tried it after playing a few missions on original and honestly I can’t tell what it does, you get spotted just as easily, enemy set up seems the same, don’t seem to get special items. If you liked / just about bared with Commandos 3 back in the day (aka Commandos 2.5) then yes this is a high recommendation, the definitive way to play. If you don’t like old “mostly” stealth oriented jank with insane (not good) level design then no, don’t bother. It’s like the anti-thesis of the stealth/real time tactics genre, a real black sheep. Help the Allies to victory

The Stone of Madness are still going to come out at some point and in a good state, Mimimi will bless us with a new game at some point in 2023/24 so it will be a while until we get to wash away the taste of War Mongrels. Also another cool indie effort to look out for that’s very early in development is Frigato. The original Commandos 3 is not perfect, but Kalypso and Raylight made it worse. They doesn’t fix any of the problems in the original game but making everything else a total mess. The only good thing about the HD version I can come up with is the new models. Although sometimes they break the original intention of the game (the original models weren’t historical realistic but easier for player to distinguish different enemy types), most of the new models are pretty to look at. And that’s the only ‘good’ thing Kalypso and Raylight done. There are no order in the campaign selection anymore, the first campaign shows on my screen is the Normandy for no reason. And player can select any campaign as they wish from the beginning? Without a function to let the player to unlock them first? I have no idea what is the logic behind such design or it just nothing but cheap and lazyThe ‘legacy’ control are not entirely legacy They change a lots of control for no reason, a set for Commandos 2 kinda made sense. But there is some weird stuff are not from everywhere or just missing. First and foremost is the screen dragging, which is set to MMB by default and don’t you dare to change it or select the ‘legacy’ settings. the dragging control would completely gone and there is no option in the control menu to rebind the screen dragging key. Because I’m used to the original control, so I select the Comm3 ‘legacy’ to use mouse wheel to rotate and guess what…? It doesn’t work. Even with the maximum rotate speed it rotate like rusted gear and cannot rotate more than 1 degree. I have no idea why theKalypso and Raylight think they need to invert the original camera control keys for no reason. All they have accomplish here is piss the original player off and done.

Cheap, buggy and lazy

The ‘force fire'(my own term, idk what’s the name of it) and the key used to adjust your firing cone are gone. This also made you cannot use the AT gun and handheld MG42 anymore. It’s probably my problem but I swear I have tried every single keys on my keyboard with either default or legacy control preset and none of it works. And I can no longer made quick turn or quick fire during emergency anymore. The rotation are often misaligned, the axis of the rotation normally suppose to be the center of your camera, but in HD every time I rotate it have a very high chance to move my camera to a different location. And no, it’s not center on my cursor either. The cursor disappear on screen frequentlyCompare to some other things this just a minor annoyance, it can be fix easily by reload the game. But still…The music sometimes are not starting at the right spot and sometimes the main theme would got muted on menu for no reasonI’m not sure if it all just a looping problem or else, all I can say is it weren’t like this in the original.Characters’ heads animation are not looping properlyIt’s very common that the idle animation will not looping at all and just get stuck. For example: I right-click and picked the FG42 which has 15 shots at the weapon slot, activate the cover mode, and the slot will change into other weapons on the character, and in this case, a rifle with 10 shots. And you can guess the rest. I lost count of how many shots left for the FG42 as the ammo count doesn’t change and kept showing me 10 since it’s not the gun I was actually using. And it took me a while to figured out what exactly goes wrong. Such small and stupid problem cause me so many confusion and frustration which I have never experience in the original Commandos 3. Weapon models are all misaligned on characters’ models.Clipping everywhere, the sniper rifle would just clip through the Sniper’s hood and all the characters’ hands are clip through the weapons they are using.Great remaster, I haven’t found any significant bugs yet, and the symbols are back! For me, it is a 4 out of 5. The remaster is good, but Commandos 3 is not the same as Commandos 2. The game is supposed to be stealth, but in Commandos 3 there are many timed missions that the only way out is to get exposed, shoot it out, or even get in a truck and start running over nazis… not very stealthy

One of my most memorable gaming recollections is of spending days inching my way through Stalingrad, trying not to get my gents shot at by an relentless and eagle-eyed encroached sniper in Commandos 3. It’s not the sort of game I would recommend in its original state as a single mistake on your part can put you back hours. That’s mostly because of the shift to an action-oriented level design that puts extra pressure over an already intense real-time tactics system, where you have to keep tabs on each individual character in your team since they’re not programmed to react automatically in any way. It makes for a hectic and more prone to trial and error game than the rest of the series for sure. If you’d kindly rewind back to my story about the sniper, for instance, after finally taking that threat out, you’re forced to defend against waves of Germans that storm into the level with few resources and little time to prepare. At the time, in order to give players a chance, Pyro Studios did try to implement a sort of coordination system where you could map different actions to each of the commandos in order to execute them all simultaneously. But it ended up being a feature that required a high level of precision to satisfactorily pull off, even more so in the heat of the action.
