Cleo – a pirate’s tale Switch NSP Free Download Unfitgirl Cleo – a pirate’s tale originally released on PC last year following a successful Kickstarter campaign from a solo developer. A game previously not on my radar until the imminent Nintendo Switch release this week, it is a top-down low-poly adventure with the spirit of a point-and-click puzzler that was destined for the Gameboy Advance in another life. Our protagonist Cleo is an unassuming young daydreamer who fantasises about the adventures she has read of the legendary Captain Cabeca and his fantastical voyages. Her father kicks her out of the local seafarer’s watering hole after she finds a dismembered hand in the kitchen that summons a chaotic ghost that creates a mess she ends up having to cop. Cleo, unable to swim and not accustomed to the ocean, ends up on a fishing boat that succumbs to the wrath of a Kraken. What happens next is a whimsical journey in which Cleo believes that her survival against these sudden bizarre events means she must be destined for nautical greatness. Cleo washes ashore a mysterious island and begins questioning the dim-witted inhabitants – a mix of pirates, hoteliers, and tourists. With simple controls, a diary to keep track of progress, and the optimistic curiosity to investigate this colourful new world, players are encouraged to interact with everything and everyone. To ignore this core tenet of classic point-and-click games means to miss out on clues and directions with which to progress events. Unfitgirl.COM SEXY GAMES

There is little to push the plot forward beyond getting home. To do so will mean collecting every tool not bolted down and looking for the contextual prompt to apply it to an object or conversation. This simple method of puzzle solving readily indicates to the player that if a said item does not yield a positive result in the contextually appropriate setting, you must keep looking. Nothing too abstract as to require a guide. Unfortunately, some of these crucial items might be little more than a couple of pixels and easy to miss. One instance for me was a worm in the ground, easily missed if not for the vibrancy of the colours popping on my Switch OLED. Also beneficial would have been clearer visual communication to indicate traversable areas to the player. Throughout the game, you may be stuck in a room and find yourself circulating the darkened perimeter repeatedly before a contextual pop-up appears to exit/enter another area. All characters are voice-acted and would not be out of place in a morning children’s cartoon. Despite this, the jokes often range from sarcastic callouts to meta commentary on delayed Kickstarters and the waning relevance of point-and-click games. None of the humour is sharp enough to elicit a chuckle, but it maintains a lighter vibe throughout that those kindred child-at-heart types will certainly appreciate.

These voice actors can’t hide

The audio quality of the voice acting could be better, with the character’s voices lacking range and sounding almost garbled and low-fi – like listening to an audio drama on cassette. However, the fun they’re having in going full cartoon pirate and bringing their low-poly characters to life. Kraken Fodder is a competitive dice game that uses a standard deck of cards and is introduced early on. An interesting idea, cards from one to six are cannons that can be loaded with one to five dice. The opponent can also choose to do the same unless they have already expended their five dice of ammunition. It’s ultimately a bluffing game against an AI, which doesn’t quite work because there’s not enough information given to the player to determine if it’s in their best interest to use more than one dice or hold out. A king and jack can reload, but if they get knocked out in the first couple of rounds, there’s no coming back for you. It’s a cool concept that needed a wrinkle or two more to empower the player’s decisions and save imminent, arbitrary losses. While it seems an odd thing to focus on, Kraken Fodder is forced on the player at two junctions in order to progress. It may not seem like much, but this mini-game grinds the pace to a halt. One early instance in the second chapter saw me endure nine straight losses before I succeeded and could continue, which wouldn’t be so bad if I felt like I learned or gained anything from the experience. A third instance occurs later on, but you can argue at length to successfully avoid playing it. For a game that can be easily clocked in a deliciously brief five hours, the time taken to finish two of these matches ended up chewing up far too much of the game’s otherwise praiseworthy brevity. One final whinge about this mini-game, the rules and intrusive pop-ups during a match constant refer to your opponent as “he/his”, even when facing a clearly femme-portrayed character (and playing as one). Also problematic, as an aside, is the depiction of an Asian character that is clearly a Fu Manchu stereotype. It is a shame that Cleo’s parodied elements of late nineteenth-century nautical fiction also had to implement reductive otherness with an inappropriately tokenised side character whose comical portrayal doesn’t seem to play into any joke beyond an offensive stereotypical depiction. In this top-down (sort of RPG) adventure you play as a young girl named Cleo, who is obsessed with the life of pirates and wants to explore the seas herself. After a bad storm that leaves her shipwrecked on an island, her quest to find the treasure of eternal memory begins. While the overall experience is brief, it manages to cram in a lot of charming dialogue and bring up really adult topics such as legacy, remembrance, and even death. The narrative is very clear yet doesn’t hold your hand like a child along the way.

It is a card and dice game

It’s always great to experience small games with a lot of love and passion oozing in every nook and cranny. Every character and item you pick up is purposeful and often has a payoff. The game of “Cleo” is much like the character herself where it welcomes the drive of adventure and exploration. The biggest winner for me here is certainly its extremely simple but utterly charming pixel art design. While the characters are just a handful of pixels, they’re unique enough to leave a lasting impression. If the developer proved anything with this game (he proved a lot), it’s he knows how to create a very fun and approachable atmosphere. The gameplay is smartly simplistic in design, and even though you’re mostly just pointing and clicking around to finish quests, none of it feels like a chore because you’re already charmed by this little world. The length of the game can be taken as a strength or as one of its few downfalls. While I do love experiencing these little slice of life games that don’t ask so much of your time and leave lasting impressions with you. A part of me couldn’t help but wish it was longer and even more fleshed out, because everything about it is set up so well. I understand this is as indie as a game could get and budget was absolutely a constraint, but that’s just how I feel. Some players may feel they got just the right amount and I wouldn’t argue against them. ICARUS

In the end, this title is only 15 bucks, which isn’t a lot, but with so many titles taking up people’s time, I worry customers will ask themselves if a game that will only require a couple hours of your time is worth that price or should it be lower? I think it’s a great price, because as I said, Cleo – a pirate’s tale did leave quite an impression. I am very happy with what Christoph Schultz pulled off and I’m excited for his future in the industry. I can only hope he can get some more financial backing and hire more help to realize his worlds. Cleo is a cynical 14-year-old girl who lives with her rough and ready father in a pub. She is a typical moody teenager who is fed up living in the pub with her dad and the boring fishermen and unsuccessful pirates who frequent the place. Cleo is infatuated with pirate stories about mysterious treasures and daring escapes. She has read all about the epic adventures of pirate legend Captain Cabeca. Cleo would like nothing better than to explore the seas and experience a grand adventure. However, when Cleo finds a strange pirate logbook and sees a ghost, who gives her a mysterious hint, her boring life is about to get turned upside down. After that, Cleo sets out on an adventure to find The Eternal Memory. Of course, there is more to the storyline than that, but I don’t want to go into much detail about it as I’ll spoil it for you. Suffice to say, the storyline is exciting and funny, and it’s one you should experience yourself.

Your opponents card deck with canon balls

Cleo – a pirates tale is packed with NPCs who all have something to say for themselves. During Cleo’s travels, you will speak to every character you come across: you’ll have to talk to them anyway as you can’t progress the storyline otherwise. You will travel the map with a crusty old sailor, Malthe Seus, and a parrot searching for the Eternal Memory. Additionally, Cleo will visit different islands, collecting items to pass on to NPCs to get clues for where she should head next. You’ll also solve some puzzles and play a card game or two of Kraken Fodder. In addition, you’ll brew some potions in the CocktHAL 8000. For example, potions such as “Coffee To Know” brewed by using Mead, rainwater, and coffee, sounds tasty, doesn’t it?The game’s developer, Christoph Schultz, has done a fantastic job of bringing us gameplay reminiscent of such games as Monkey Island and Sam and Max. Cleo – a pirates tale is packed full of wacky dialogue and lots of humour. I spent most of the time smiling as I investigated the island and solved the mystery of The Eternal Memory. Voice acting is on par with triple-A games; it’s wonderful. Each character has a unique personality that shines through as you talk to them. Cleo herself is sassy with plenty of attitude. Visually the game is colourful, and the pixel artwork is very well animated. I loved how Cleo runs with such enthusiasm. Sound effects are appropriate to the gameplay, and with the music, it all comes together in a brilliant package. Iconoclasts Switch NSP

cleo is a kid whose boring life turns upside down when a random ghost, appearing from a pirate logbook found inside a dead fish, destroys half the kitchen in her dad’s bar and she gets sent to butthair pete’s boat as punishment. luckily, you can always count on a kraken (hey mickey!) to mix up a lame early morning fishing trip. only to find yourself doing a fetch quest for a siren soon after… but then some serious adventuring is going down and parts of the story are actually quite touching. wasd/arrow movement plus shift to run, but it’s point & click stuff otherwise, though controller is also supported and there are hotkeys. controls are rebindable but still need a bit of getting used to. by default left click is interaction, right click uses the currently selected item and mouse wheel click brings up the inventory. only the currently held item is shown, which is not great, and mouse wheel should cycle through inventory items in the corner but it doesn’t. it would also be better if tab brought up a documents browser instead of only opening the currently active one. to look at something else, you have to bring up the inventory, select another document, close the inventory and press tab. way too finicky. text appears instantly, dialog can be skipped sentence by sentence, cutscenes by holding the left mouse button. I wouldn’t mind a toggle for non-automatic text advancement, so you’d have to click before the next part plays.

besides a bunch of puzzles of ‘find the right item to use on the right thing’ and a few others, all on the easier side of things, there’s also a card/dice mini-game called kraken fodder. detailed rules are available and it seems a bit complicated at first, but it’s fun and there are multiple characters to play against throughout the game. still, it’s not always optional, which was a horrible ‘design decision’. after unlocking it during the game, let me play it anytime from the main menu (it’s not possible), but don’t gate progress with an rng-based game. some speed settings for all the animations would’ve been nice too. fishing is another pastime and there are also collectibles, a ton of of messages in bottles, also acquired via fishing. they’re fluff written by kickstarter backers, very much not worth the hassle. an annoyance with fishing is the soundbite popping up after every few attempts, remarking it would be better is she knew what to look for, can’t be skipped. so you’re better off waiting until you have a goal and better equipment. as I said above, the pixel art is gorgeous and the voice acting is fantastic too (there’s english and german), with separate volume slider. besides regular autosaves there’s manual saving anytime over multiple slots, as it should be, always used to be, yet rarely happens in ‘modern’ games that can’t even reproduce functionality from 30 years ago.
