As you can guess, this game plays like Space Invaders or Galaga. But Chicken Invaders does more than just replace the aliens with silly looking Space Chickens. Each level plays by its own rules, with the chickens attacking in many different ways. They may attack in random groups, in detailed formations, or just fly across the screen. Some levels don’t even feature the titular chickens, as you’ll be dealing with a meteor shower or something instead. Several boss levels are also included, pitting the player against gigantic Army Chickens or an egg-shaped mothership. Gameplay is your standard shoot ’em up affair, with enemies swooping around the screen, and players tasked with dodging incoming fire and blasting them all down to proceed. Chickens will drop a variety of power-ups for your laser, money for high scores and chicken pieces for special bombs. Darting around collecting the fallout is a game in itself.

Players can also use a number of different weapons to fight the feathered menace. From time to time, weapon powerups drop from defeated enemies. Collecting these powerups will either give you a new primary weapon or increase the power of the current weapon. Each weapon is color-coded, so try ’em out and then stick to your favorite. All of them have infinite ammunition too, so don’t be stingy your shots. Of course, if your ship is ever destroyed, then your main weapon will lose some (but not all) of its power. Your secondary weapons are rockets. Each rocket does tremendous damage to every on-screen enemy, usually clearing the entire screen in a single shot. Unlike the ray guns, you only have a limited number of rockets, so only use them when you absolutely need to. New rockets can be earned by eating fried chicken, which can be collected whenever a Space Chicken is defeated. It does take a while, but the more you “eat”, the more rockets you’ll have. Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave makes no bones about its inspirations. This game takes the concepts of all the great old-school arcade shooters like Space Invaders and Asteroids and wraps them into a colorfully designed shooter that feels like it could have just as easily been a free flash game. Your mouse controls the trusty little ship, and the two mouse buttons launch your primary weapons and extra-special missiles. You’ll find yourself fighting Space Invaders-like waves of hostile chickens, periodically shooting down asteroids, bosses and other craziness in the process. It’s a goofy game, but an occasionally challenging one–sometimes because it actually shows flashes of understanding of what makes a good shooter, and other times because it opts to make the color of the enemy fire (white, because they’re eggs, get it?) blend in with all the other kookiness going on onscreen, thus making it stupidly difficult to actually see where the fire is coming from.

Shooter fans will likely garner some amusement from Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave, but they won’t want to pay full price for it. It’s a legitimate distraction that wears pretty thin pretty quickly, and there just isn’t a compelling enough product here to really make it worth your time. Chicken Invaders 4 continues on from where the story left off in number three, although it isn’t necessary to play the rest of the series to fully appreciate this latest release. Our hero is about to order a large portion of chicken from his local Space Burger drive-thru, when a mysterious ship appears from a nearby portal and tells of an incoming chicken invasion. The chickens have built a huge Egg Cannon which can be used to fire eggs at planets, covering them in yolk and egg white which then fries in the heat of the sun. Players must chase down the terrible machine through multiple waves of dangerous poultry, dodging egg bombs and swooping birds of doom. Ultimate Omelette is genuinely humorous, make no mistake. Dialogue is told through speech bubbles and Star Wars-inspired cutscenes, and while the story is rather throwaway, there are plenty of great lines to quote back to friends.
