Carto sees you play as the titular character, flying through the sky with her grandmother in an airship. Being a curious child, you begin rearranging pieces of your grandmother’s map while she isn’t looking. A terrible storm strikes the ship and you tumble out the side with the pieces of map in tow! The narrative here isn’t going to drop your jaw or keep you on the edge of your seat, it’s just an adorable Pixar-esque tale of trying to fix what you did and find your way back to your loving grandmother. Carto – as in “Cartographer” – comes from a tribe of people who explore the world and can reshape it with their magic-like maps. The land is broken into square tiles which can be rearranged and rotated to make various combinations. There are of course some caveats such as grasslands must connect to grasslands, water to water, etc. Carto does a great job of building the complexity of these tiles as the game progresses, often leaving you with interesting word puzzles to solve which will spawn a much needed tile. In one instance an NPC told me I could find an item I needed at the mouth of the river “where the river meets the sea.” I had a river tile and a sea tile, but nothing that connected them. If I placed them adjacent to one another, however, the tile I was looking for popped into existence. These word puzzles grow steadily more challenging and oh so much more satisfying to complete as the story progresses. Carto herself is a rather shy protagonist, the majority of her dialogue conveyed in Emojis while everyone else speaks normally. She reminds me of a mix of Venelope from Wreck it Ralph and Boo from Monsters, Inc. She is adventurous, brave, and an all around wholesome and enjoyable avatar to play as. An Unexpected Journey of Fun

Volcano, and icebergs with a cast of NPCs you’ll get to know as you do the typical hero business of helping them out – although they seem oddly nonchalant about your ability to completely rebuild the world on a whim! While none of these characters are particularly memorable, you do end up exiting the level feeling like you’ve done your good deed for the day as you carry on. The one exception to this rule is the new friend you make at the beginning of the game; Shianan. As a side character who appears sporadically, Shianan is a great vessel for Carto and the player to learn about this new land and its customs. By the time the game ends you get a strong sense of their friendship, and as the post-credits scene rolled I found myself hoping to see them together again in the future.The game is quite a relaxing experience. There are no time limits or impending threats to worry about, and the art style is a beautifully unique take. The world feels almost like it’s made of construction paper, yet objects in the environment stand tall and move with the camera. I initially felt like the fields were too plain, however, their lack of objects helps to differentiate them from the adjacent, densely populated forests. I particularly enjoyed a segment mid-game where I was underground and needed to frequently manipulate only a few tiles with winding tunnels to find my way out Catizens

or the far more complex manipulation needed in the iceberg stage where single tiles are replaced with tetronimo shapes. It felt like Carto was only ramping up before it ended at the five hour mark and I would love to see more.Carto isn’t a big blockbuster title with A-list voice acting and a huge budget. It’s a calm, soulful, feel-good experience that challenges you to think in unconventional ways. It has a clever dialogue with some 4th wall humor and is an all-around wholesome, enjoyable adventure. Carto gives you enough of the narrative to know what to do but wisely avoids over-explaining too much about the various cultures in this new world. It’s a well-crafted children’s book come to life with some puzzles that will absolutely leave you stumped and trying new things. I was happy to see a chapter select option upon the games completion as well as the reveal of hidden collectibles I can’t wait to go back and find. I would have liked if some of the environments had a little more going on in regards to the aesthetic detail, but I also acknowledge their design better reflects the nature of a map as is its intention. Carto is the kind of game you love to play on a quiet rainy day and I’m excited to play it over and over again. Carto is a colourful, puzzle adventure game that tasks players with altering the world around them by changing a magical map.

It started with a sandstorm

Playing as Carto, you travel the world and unlock new pathways by discovering new map pieces and arranging them in the correct order. This fantastic mechanic is backed up by a gorgeous world that sees protagonist Carto visit a number of unique islands. The main bulk of gameplay is spent figuring out how to traverse the islands that Carto and her travelling companion visit. Using a map based on square grids, you can change and move blocks of the world to create new paths or layouts. Characters within the game world will provide hints on the whereabouts of items or people of interest you need to find, but then it’s on you to figure out which way the map should sit. You can unlock new areas of the map by placing your current tiles in the correct layout, or you can find new map pieces throughout the world. The act of placing the tiles and figuring out which way unlocks the path forward is a lot of fun. It’s a simple mechanic that’s executed masterfully. What makes Carto’s mechanic so fantastic is how it encourages players to make logical conclusions. One puzzle early on had me trying to make a forest out of three tiles using the outskirts of wooded areas on them. Place them correctly and you will unlock the woods at their centre. The game is filled with these great moments and it really makes you feel like you’ve been a bit of a clever clogs for solving them. Celeste Switch NSP

I’ve also got to commend the team for how well the mechanic fits in with gameplay. Switching from exploration to the map and back out feels seamless, especially considering you are often completely changing the layout of the world. I’d have liked to see a little more integration with the characters of the world, as they mostly seem pretty oblivious to their surroundings constantly changing places. Visually Carto has a scrapbook-esque vibe to it with a pastel themed colour palette. Its bold visual design fits the cartography mechanic incredibly well, bringing each island you visit to life. There’s also some brilliant visual design elements in Carto as well, with sounds visually represented on screen during puzzles and in-game events. It’s a small touch that not only brings you closer to the world, but it’s also a significant move for accessibility. The character designs are all colourful and cute, with sprites having an almost Pixar look about them. It’s just a disappointment that the narrative doesn’t do more with the mechanic. While the character’s and places you visit look great, it doesn’t really explore how Carto’s map could have affected these people. The narrative simply doesn’t match up to the excellent world-shifting mechanic, which is a shame as an equally fantastic story would have elevated Carto into something really special.

The game does also suffer with some repetititon in later areas, as it never fully explores the map shifting mechanics to their full potential. Each island is broken into multiple squares. Most areas start small, with just a few map squares, but they become larger areas to explore as Carto finds map pieces scattered throughout her journey. Accessing a god-view top-down map menu, Carto can pick up individual squares, rotate them, and move them to different locations. Need to make a river flow a different way? Rotate that map piece. Can’t reach that location beyond the barrier? Rearrange the map. This idea is incredibly fresh and unique. Map manipulation in Carto isn’t without restrictions, however – each edge of a map square must match the same type of landscape on the edges of other squares it touches. Water needs to join water, forest to forest, fields to fields, and so on. Even with these limitations, there are enough unique layouts so that the configurations seem almost endless. Other aspects of Carto are equally well crafted. The graphics are beautiful, like cartoon watercolors. While not action packed, the controls are still responsive and never a burden when leisurely exploring an island or performing numerous map adjustments. If I have any criticisms, there are a couple of puzzles that crop up in the mid-game that are a slight hindrance. One required going to the back of a building instead of the front. It was obvious that I had to go to that location, but too vague in that Carto had to search behind it. Another puzzle required a clue in the map menu – only I don’t think that clue ever appeared for me! I had to look up the solutions to both to continue the journey.And it was an enjoyable journey. Gamers looking for a fresh take on puzzle solving adventures will absolutely find it with the map manipulation in Carto.Carto, the title character, is a curious young girl with powerful map-manipulation abilities. She comes by her talents naturally, as her Granny happens to be a gifted cartographer as well. One day, a map mishap occurs aboard their floating airship, and the two become separated during a subsequent violent storm. Carto has been hurled to the land below and now she must somehow make her way back to her dear Granny. In the meantime, she has much exploring & puzzle-solving to do!First, let me just start off by saying I love the look of this game. Its hand-drawn, lovingly-rendered graphics are a cut above most of its indie counterparts. The soothing beats and nature sounds that accompany your travels are also instantly engaging.

There’s a variety of lush biomes to traverse, with forest & meadows, snowy mountains, and desert hills among them. Although much of the landscape is empty, the painterly environments are nonetheless pleasing to the eye.At the outset, Carto finds a scrolled-up map near her arrival point. Opening it, you’ll see that the game-world is laid out in square tiles which can be rearranged at will. By shifting or rotating these tiles, you can control the map and open up new paths or even reveal hidden areas. The catch is that their borders must match up with those of the tiles adjacent to them. So, if there’s water on one side of a square, that side has to align with a similar-edged piece. The same goes for borders of grassland, road, etc. You can then drop the tile into place on the map “grid.” The quest is to continually find new pieces of map as you explore. These will be discovered along the way, with each new area you unlock. Whenever you manipulate the Tetris-like configuration of squares, you’re changing the terrain on the ground. Huts and other structures may suddenly appear, areas will connect allowing Carto to proceed where she previously could not, and the way forward will open up. Every new section is a little puzzle, ones which start out easy at the beginning of the game and become increasingly more challenging as you progress.
