This makes for a more chill experience, but also deflates the potency of the “simulator” aspect. Therein lies the rub. Brewmaster strikes a lot of compromises, and your enjoyment will rely on your interest in the hobby, and what you want out of a simulator. If you want a wholly realistic experience, well, Brewmaster glazes over a few of the less compelling aspects, like ensuring your tools are clean and such. At one point my finished brew had boiled down and was no longer a suitable batch size, so I had to pour more tap water into it… and it turned out as a perfectly passable product, not something like the censored culinary disasters you can create in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I’ve never brewed beer at all but I have to assume adding regular tap water into a finished product would have some impact on its flavour profile. And maybe it’s just me, but there’s a certain hollowness at the end of the brewing process. As someone who enjoys craft beer, the end of each brew felt like hitting the drop in a roller coaster and coming to a dead stop instead—leaving the player like some kind of Sisyphean figure from mythology, cursed to produce various dream beers and never being allowed to consume them. There are, unfortunately, a handful of bugs going around at Brewmaster’s launch. I personally had my progress shut down when my cupboard told me I owned no grains, but I could not order more of the variety I needed because the game told me I already owned it.

Users on the Steam forums have identified others with less game-breaking intensity as well.  However overall, I’m pleased with the balance Brewmaster strikes between simulating the real craft and making a fun tinkering game. Not having to tediously restock my cupboards with enough ingredients is a blessing, though I would have preferred a more precise pouring method than rolling my scroll wheel to actually tip containers. More direct guidance on how to affect individual aspects would’ve been nice as well, or at least having steps on a recipe automatically crossed off as they’re performed. It’s not so in-depth that it could be called “hardcore” and scare off more casual audiences, but grounds itself in detail enough to appease experts. And so it should come as no surprise that we got a copy of Brewmaster to review: a beer brewing simulation game, and honestly, it’s pretty good. We like this one. You follow recipes to brew a beer: boiling water, adding grains, hops, honey or other additives, and then you ferment it. Once the fermentation process is over you can bottle your beer, with a label you can customise, and you also get a report explaining the flavour profile of your beer, how alcoholic it is, and other things like that. Brewing beers with certain characteristics progresses the story and you can later buy new equipment or ingredients. You can even decorate your workspace a little. We put a picture of a cat in ours. Brewmaster is really laid back. There are no fail states — or certainly none that we found. There’s no drama. Nobody dies. It’s just about brewing beer, and learning about beer, and then eventually entering a beer brewing competition to be crowned the titular Brewmaster™. That’s it. And we like it. One route mimics real-world activities, while the other route uses it as a base but changes it for gameplay.

My short time with Brewmaster has proved it is a highly accurate simulator to the point it could be a learning tool to understand brewing and how to do it at home. This preview was done as a one-shot run with a tutorial/walkthrough from start to finish on the first brew. Brewmaster keeps its immersive feel from the start as all measurements you put in will stay in that container till removed. You start by putting the pot in the sink to get water. Turning on the tap will start to fill the pot, and you turn off the tap. Meaning you can overfill if not careful. The player will have to aim to get what is needed. The trick so far was to follow the recipe exactly while getting as close as possible to the measurements. Even pouring out ingredients or liquid into something, you will slowly tip it over to more or less, depending on the angle. The game shows you how much is being poured, but it can be hard to get it right on the money. I can understand not having to measure cups for twenty-liter pots, but I wish they had some for the smaller sugars and such you add. Understandability with this being an alpha build was to show what the game is to be. It was something on my mind at the time when playing. Going deeper in the realism feel is all the info on how brews are graded, including gravity and strengths. Everything has to come from somewhere when you use the tubes to connect. The temperature of water affects how things turn out, and items lose heat over time. I enjoyed aiming for the measurements while micromanaging the goal of what was needed for the recipe. It didn’t feel like a bland numbers game, as the walkthrough gave me the reasons why I have to do it that way. I learned about the process, what happens to the brew during that step, and what happens if it’s not done right. They even explain what you are creating and its use in the next step. I know somewhat of beers, but I came out knowing more and interested in learning more as I did the process. There are ways to fast forward time in days and just speeding up to let minutes pass in seconds and hours come quickly. Once everything is done, you can then take it to another room to be able to taste it and see all the final stats of your brew. I will admit it lost me here as I was unsure how good or bad I did.  Overall it is hard to tell the full direction involving what happens to brews you make. I could see filling orders based on quality and taste wanted. I could also see more business-minded gameplay. Either way, I feel it will have the realism and ability to teach people who know nothing of brewing the starter steps while teaching the players knowledge of brewing for themselves. The game ran very smoothly for an alpha. This will be one preview I will be excitedly returning to for a full review. I can see this one being a good one for beer fans, and hopefully, the full game adds more surrounding the core experience I got to do.
