It’s been 30 years since you last spoke to Joey Drew – back when the studio was at the top of its influence, producing a string of popular shows including the titular Bendy – but as Henry soon learns upon his return, it’s now fallen into considerable disrepair. Where are all the animators? Why is there is ink seeping through the walls and what on earth is the Ink Machine, anyway? Over its five chapters, the answers to these questions are slowly revealed as you push further into the studio’s labyrinthine depths. As with most horror games of recent years, Bendy And The Ink Machine flits between environmental puzzles, exploration and evasion. There’s a small amount of combat, but mostly you’re tentatively searching new corners of the studio and running for your life as you encounter the products of Joey Drew’s mad attempts to revive his fortunes. From the way wooden cutouts of Bendy will suddenly slide into view around a corner, or how doors will eerily open themselves to reveal the scares within, Bendy And The Ink Machine is constantly trying to keep your adrenaline pumping, especially in the middle and later chapters. It’s an experience that’s always at odds with the visual style, which gives everything its own lived-in cartoon feel that perfectly captures the charm and whimsy of black and white animation. The fact that many of its enemies draw on this era means you’re consistently unsettled by this corruption of something seemingly innocent and safe. There’s a real BioShock vibe to the entire game, from the revelations that are made about Henry’s past to the retro aesthetic that clings to every corner of the game’s dilapidated setting. You’ll battle monsters made of ink one moment, then be faced with ones you can’t possibly face – including the titular Bendy – the next. In these sequences, you’ll be employing that overly familiar need to run and hide in order to reach the next area in one piece. However, it’s these well-known elements that start to chip away at the game’s own unique personality.

This first chapter sets the tone for the adventure ahead.

The fact Bendy And The Ink Machine is trying to cover so many horror bases makes it a real hodge-podge of great and poor design decisions. Jump scares come thick and fast, but they’re used so often that even the scarediest of cats is going to grow accustomed to the telegraphed setup each time. Enemy AI is also frustratingly dumb, with some of the inky horrors you encounter effectively watching you hide behind a door, only to walk off, seemingly nonplussed as to your location. It’s a game that wants to be part BioShock, part Outlast: Bundle of Terror and part Resident Evil, but beyond capturing a consistent sense of dread throughout, it never comes close to those aforementioned classics. Performance on Nintendo Switch can be very patchy at times, too. The framerate is meant to sit around 30fps, but we encountered consistent chugging, especially when outrunning foes or in puzzle rooms with a few too many moving parts. The issue doesn’t break the game, but it can take you out of the moment when playing something that requires you to be utterly invested in its unsettling experience. If you’ve already played Bendy And The Ink Machine elsewhere, this technical problem will probably be a bigger issue than if you’re picking this up for the first time on Switch. We’ll also address the elephant in the room while we’re here; Bendy And The Ink Machine’s ’20s and ’30s aesthetic draws obvious comparisons with another recent game that uses this art style, Cuphead. While it’s easy to claim that the developers have ‘copied’ this approach, Bendy has enough of its own visual personality to stand on its own two legs – and this is such a vibrant and engaging period of animation that we don’t mind more than one game using it for inspiration. Bendy and the Ink Machine has plenty going for it as a new horror instalment on Nintendo Switch – such as the way it builds a growing sense of dread and despair throughout its five chapters while using an animation style that’s meant to evoke the safety and joy of childhood memories – but it’s let down by some irritating design decisions and frustrating performance issues. Still, if you really do love your horror and want something that ticks all the boxes of a modern scarefest, Bendy and the Ink Machine is still a worthy descent into madness. I didn’t know whether to laugh or get nervous when I heard Bendy and the Ink Machine was about to drop. This stand-out, comedic horror game has drawn a lot of attention to itself lately, and it’s easy to see why. Bendy is a fresh new take on the average hide and seek horror concept, and does it in a very cartoonish style. Remember Steamboat Willie? The 1928 animated short-film by Walt Disney? Anyhow, let’s just say Mickey Mouse, or better yet, Cuphead. All of these styles of drawing can be found strewn about Bendy and the Ink Machine, giving the game a very old-school feel.

The developers at theMeatly Games knew they were onto something when they created the first chapter, and realized that more could be added, so they did, and thus, Bendy was born. You start off in the footsteps of a Mr Henry Stein, a retired animator who receives an invitation to his old animation studio, but after he arrives, it seems he cannot leave. Cartoon characters had come to life via the use of the ink machine, and it’s up to you to find out why. As you move forward through the studio you uncover recordings on cassette players, explaining the story and who is behind it all. Bendy carries with it all the traits you expect from a modern horror game, (and even though you would rarely use it) one of these being stealth. You may, if you choose to try and stay hidden, but the A.I. in the game, well, I wouldn’t call it smart. You can hide in cupboards and wait for the horror to pass, but you soon realize that once you step foot in the cupboard, the enemy completely ignores you, making the chase scenes not so dramatic. Because of this I chose to go flat-out, though after a couple deaths, you can easily remember the paths to take and can simply outrun the enemies. Gas Station Simulator 

The horror element in Bendy isn’t so much a jump scare one, and although it does contain a few shock-value scenes, horror mainly comes from the story aspects – but I would still advise you to run either way. Speaking of enemies, the character design is amazing. From monsters jumping out of ink pools to big monstrosities that can just rip you apart, these visions of the Joey Drew Studio makes you wonder what kind of cartoon they were cooking up down there. The visual surroundings are a work of art, the full detail of the 1920s has been implemented. Big boards with big nails make the walls, as well as over-sized cartoon projectors and musical instruments, with drawing desks and ink wells atop. Not to mention all the cardboard cutouts of Bendy smiling the whole way, which you can destroy if you have a weapon at the time. What’s that? Weapons you say? Yes, in Bendy you indeed have weapons, but that’s only when the game decides to give them to you. These can vary from a shifter to a fire axe. Safe to say if you receive a weapon, there will be enemies to kill and boards to pry open; revealing new areas to continue forth. A specially labelled can of beans will help you on your travels, acting as health which you can chart around the edges of the screen if you’re getting too low – the ink will ultimately suffocate you and pull you down. Not to worry though, as long as you clock-in at work you will start from that clock-in machine. Yes, you heard me, to save, you need to clock-in at work. Nice touch. I found Bendy to be a great horror in which everything works well.

Above all, fear the machine and survive.

The story and characters, along with a well designed environment all fit together nicely. I was, however, a bit disappointed elsewhere. Bendy suffers at the moment from some pretty bad framerate issues, coupled with the fact that everything being the same color can sometimes lead to mild confusion when trying to flee. The developers will need to make sure this is patched right away, but, don’t let this dishearten you. Bendy is a thoroughly enjoyable game, one that had me eagerly awaiting every twist and turn to see what was going to happen next. Originally released on the PC last year, the title been re-released with additional content for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Bendy takes an unorthodox turn and combines two very opposite genres, cartoons and horror, to make a terrifying experience. The title stays true to the survival-horror genre by prioritizing running and hiding with some mild combat. A compelling story and atmosphere drive forward Bendy and the Ink Machine to keep players invested in this chilling mystery. Some gameplay hiccups detract from the title’s quality, but it serves as a solid addition to the horror genre.

We play as Henry Stein, a former animator at Joey Drew Studios who helped make the character Bendy a reality. Taking major inspiration from Disney’s “Steamboat Willie” era, the graphics have a hand-drawn quality to them that add some personality to the game. Even Bendy and his crew feel familiar with their old-school animation. Joey, an old friend, has invited Henry to the studio to catch up, but Henry arrives to an abandoned studio, and after some exploration, he stumbles upon some horrifying sights. A giant ink machine sputtering black goop becomes a Frankenstein’s monster within the studio. What’s worse, Henry stumbles upon a horrifying experiment where it appears that Joey has been dissecting real-life cartoon characters from their Bendy series. A mix of mad scientist and occult worshipping set the stage for horror. We help Henry turn on the pumps for the ink machine, and all hell breaks loose. Ink monsters emerge to chase us down, and any attempt to leave the studio is met with the floors crumbling to swallow us whole. Thus ends Chapter One, and we awaken later within the bowels of the studio to explore the mystery further. GAL*GUN: DOUBLE PEACE

Immediately, Bendy and the Ink Machine does a great job of creating a chilling atmosphere to explore. There is good pacing to the title, as it utilizes minor scare tactics in the beginning to put the player on edge, like a Bendy cardboard cutout changing locations, or creepy noises coming from the surroundings. It’s a title that definitely follows the “less is more” formula of horror to maximize scares. Once we get far enough into the story to see upgraded scares, we learn that Bendy is not the loveable cartoon character he once was. The cast of characters is distinct and horrifying. The ink machine has brought these characters to life, but they are far removed from their original forms. Bendy has become an ink devil that stalks the player when we attempt to pass through different areas. One can only hide when his booming footsteps and ragged breathing announce his arrival. It becomes a horrifying experience trying to solve the mystery. Being able to do so much with so little is a principle of survival-horror and shows that the title is more than child’s play.
