Aeronautica Imperialis Flight Command Free Download Unfitgirl Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command is just the latest in a long line of games to fly out of the Warhammer hanger, so we decided to strap in and see if Orks really can fly or if this new adventure is all just hot air. In a world far far away the 41st Millenium is torn asunder by conflict. Humanity tears through space in monstrous warships, slipping between hellscapes to push back the alien hordes for the Emporer. However, when the Empire needs to flush infidels and Orks off a planet then a battleship isn’t quite going to cut it. Far above Imperial Marines and Tech Priests, the squadrons of Aeronautica Imperialis can be found fighting for the sky. Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command is yet another turn-based strategy title for fans of Warhammer 40K that just arrived on PC last week. Developed by the indie team at Binary Planets and published by Green Man Gaming, this aerial adventure takes plenty of inspiration from the Aeronautica Imperialis miniature game of the same name. Players putting down the dice and picking up their keyboard for another turn will find a series of dogfights where Orks and Imperial squads of pilots fight for the future of the empire. The game features detailed flight mechanics that take into account factors such as altitude, speed, and maneuverability.

For those of you that come to the Aueonautica Imperialis franchise for the first time, you might be surprised to find this glimpse of the 40K universe does not feature the usual hulking space wrecks and visions of destruction that litter most video games from the Warhammer hanger. Instead, players putting together a squadron for battle will find a title that takes a heavy dose of Imperial Steampunk mixed with the odd Battle of Britain war flick. You’ll pick from a team of battle-hardened pilots and take to the skies playing as either the Orks or Imperial pilots, where your team can go full throttle on an individual scenario or drop bombs on a fully-fledged campaign mode. Like the physical version of this strategy, campaigns mean rolling your way through a series of encounters using a range of pilots, hardware, and weapons to take on the task at hand. This could mean escorting a bomber across enemy territory, ambushing those dam Ork mid-flight, or landing some cargo while under fire. There’s plenty of action available for the most hotshot pilot and even while trudging through a campaign, missions don’t follow a particular narrative, allowing some diversity among a relatively limited pool of potential missions.

The player can choose from four factions: Imperium, Chaos, Orks, and T’au.

I like to start talking about a video game from some of its positive aspects ; it is clear that it is not always possible to find something completely unique, but a functional aspect is enough, perhaps an intelligent cue that gives a touch of personality to the title. That’s how I am, deep down I’ve always been a person who sees the glass as half full. Well, having clarified this, we can consider the chapter of good news on Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command closed and go on to see what does not work . Before getting into the cockpit and flying into battle, all pilots will need to undergo some basic training. While your weapon of choice on the tabletop might be a decent set of dice, It’s highly advisable to run through the preamble and tutorials before cutting through the clouds this time. A range of instructional systems provides a written introduction to and a chance to try out the drag and drop style movement system that Binary Planets has built for your group of aeronauts. The keyboard and mouse control systems here provide an adequate balance of top down strategy with a more dynamic 3D overview of the battlefield as each aircraft swoops and banks across the screen. As a strategy title, there is more than just move and shoot to winning any encounter. Movement, weapon handling, pilot selection, and even landing systems all involved in winning this war. However, these controls still manage to give new players plenty of clear instruction and veer clear of nosediving into micromanagement. While there are a ton of options to train on, things don’t ever feel too overwhelming for a first-timer and Binary Planets manage an acceptable balance between shoot first and thinking through each encounter. I actually picked up the tabletop version of Aeronautica Imperialis around a year ago – I am a slave to tabletop plastic – so I had a rough idea what to expect. Being a turn-based tabletop aerial combat game, I was not surprised to find the same is true of its digital counterpart (sans tabletop). Set in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, Aeronautica sees the pilots of humanity dogfighting with a race of savage green-skinned soccer hooligans known as the Orks. Bring all your epic weaponry to bear against whichever force you wish to see blown out of the sky – you get to play both sides.

Campaign mode: The game features a single-player campaign mode where the player can play through a story-based campaign for each faction.

The game is presented as a 3D-spaced, turn-based manoeuvre game. On your turn, choose what you want your pilots to do, taking into account the possible movement of your enemies and work to strafe and destroy – or elude and escape your foes. Working within the 3D space of the game takes some getting used to. Selecting your pilot (and their aircraft) is simple enough, however the act of actually executing a particular action takes some figuring out. It is simple enough to click and drag your aircraft to assign what you wish to happen, but the learning curve comes from setting your camera up just right to view the airspace in a way that means you are confident with what will unfold. An ongoing frustration (mostly on my part) was ‘committing’ my turn to take place, and watching the action camera display it in the real-time that is your turn – only to discover my dopey ass had set my pilot to fly directly into someone I thought might have been above or below me. Stupidity on my part, as I never reflected on how that vertical axis was treating me. Initially I found the method of inputting your action and executing it tedious, but as I came closer to mastering the buttons available to me, it sped up and I started to feel more like a flying ace. There is also a bit of frustration when you reach close quarters. With no real reference to work off, I found myself in many situations where both myself and my AI opponent would be flying in tight circles trying to get into each other’s sightlines, looking like a pair of dopey blow flies trying to smell the other’s ass. I found myself desperately wanting an AI vs AI mode, so I could perhaps see how the game expected me to deal with the situation – instead of frustratingly committing to a really dramatic move that likely puts me in danger, but at least shakes the stalemate. Not a purely turn-based tactician, therefore, but more similar to titles like Frozen Synapse , or, to stay more on topic, the discreet Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock . Okay, where do I start? Let’s start with tactical planning. The planes we have available differ in armament and agility , which is good, but the set of special maneuvers is almost identical to each other, which is bad. The review you are reading deals with the gaming conversation of the Games Workshop miniatures game , and reproduces it faithfully. Too much, and we’ll see why. The games take place in rounds , each of which is divided into two phases: first orders are assigned to one’s units, and then these are carried out simultaneously for both sides.

Skirmish mode: The game also features a skirmish mode where the player can set up custom battles against the AI or other players.

In the Imperial Air Force you control futuristic planes that try and shoot down the enemy without being shot at themselves. Each plane has a set of statistics and manoeuvres that it can perform. Not all planes are the same, some have better manoeuvrability than others, some are better armoured and some better armed. Somehow you have to get your planes to coordinate together to bring down the enemy. To do this you select a manoeuvre for each plane and then select commit. All the planes move at the same time, so you need to try and second guess what the enemy is up to, there’s no point sneaking up behind where they are on the screen as by the time you get there they might have done a power dive and are not even close to where you are. Essentially you need to pick a speed, altitude and direction and see what happens until tactics evolve. The beauty of Aeronautica Imperialis is its simplicity to control. Picking up the gameplay is child’s play, but learning the tactics that you need to win is a little more taxing. Trial and error will come into play a fair amount, but every time you play, you learn, you improve and you get closer to winning, or if you’re already winning, closer to total annihilation on a regular basis. Players can participate in a narrative-driven campaign that sees their squadrons progress through a series of missions, gaining experience and new equipment along the way.

As per usual there are different playing levels, three in the case of Aeronautica Imperialis. Rookie, where there are less experienced enemies, Ace, where there are better-trained enemies and more of them, and Apostle where you are flying planes that are on fire, have no weapons, the enemies are doubled and all have 50 heat-seeking missiles on board. OK, that was a lie, but it’s bloody hard. Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command might very well be a turn-based game but that doesn’t mean that combat is stuck in the propeller age. Jet fighters and bomber craft are the name of the game and each of these has the freedom to fly across any arena of engagement, diving down or banking around their enemy to bring them into firing range. Rather than engage in fully automated electronic warfare, the WW2 influence shines through as teams of warriors attack in three dimensions, providing plenty of opportunities for pilots to plan and commit to a huge range of potential actions. Of course, committing any action allows the enemy to roll the dice and that’s when things get really interesting for fighter pilots.

Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command mixes up the traditional turn-based chaos by committing all actions at the same time for all players, meaning Imperial and Ork aviators must make educated guesses on enemy movement across three dimensions. This might not give Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command the same sort of dynamic experience that classics like Homeworld manage but it is an interesting twist that isn’t easy to get to grips with until you earn those wings. Upgrades, crew assignments, and a number of other multiplayer aspects ca similarly feel functional rather than special, and it’s something I fully expect to get some love and attention as time goes on. Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command is a mixed bag of dice. It’s a unique concept and the tabletop conversion and combat interpretation feels fantastic, its just a shame that when your head’s out the clouds the rest of the game doesn’t feel quite so special. Fans of strategy titles should definitely take this interesting new title for a spin but don’t expect it to be a long haul flight. Aeronautica Imperialis: Flight Command is out now on PC, via Steam and Green Man Gaming.
